Stochastic response of beams equipped with tuned mass dampers subjected to Poissonian loads

2019

This contribution deals with the vibrational response of Euler-Bernoulli beams equipped with tuned mass dampers, subjected to random moving loads. The theory of generalised functions is used to capture the discontinuities of the response variables at the positions of the tuned mass dampers, which involves deriving exact complex eigenvalues and eigenfunctions from a characteristic equation built as the determinant of a 4 x 4 matrix, regardless of the number of tuned mass dampers. Building pertinent orthogonality conditions for the deflection eigenfunctions, the stochastic responses, under Poissonian white noise, are evaluated. In a numerical application, a beam with multiple tuned mass dampe…

Steel fibre and transverse reinforcement effects on the behaviour of high strength concrete beams

2012

An experimental program was carried out to investigate the influence of fibre reinforcement on the mechanical behaviour of high strength reinforced concrete beams. Eighteen beams, loaded in fourpoint bending tests, were examined by applying monotonically increasing controlled displacements and recording the response in terms of load-deflection curves up to failure. The major test variables were the volume fraction of steel fibres and the transverse steel amount for two different values of shear span. The contribution of the stirrups to the shear strength was derived from the deformations of their vertical legs, measured by means of strain gauges. The structural response of the tested beams …

Flexural behavior of hybrid glass beams with rectangular cross-sections

2018

Abstract An experimental investigation regarding the flexural and the shear behavior of glass beams with length 900, 1300, 1700 mm and rectangular cross-section is presented and discussed. Rectangular cross-sections were obtained by assembling three float glass panels of depth 200 mm and thickness 6 mm through an acrylic adhesive with an effective depth of 19.52 mm (6 + 0.76 + 6 + 0.76 + 6 mm). Some specimens were also reinforced internally with steel plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 25 mm and thickness 6 mm and plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 50 mm placed at the bottom portion of the beams for the entire length of the beams themselves. Three specimens for each investigated series were…

Structural behaviour of hybrid glass beams with T cross-sections

2018

Abstract An experimental investigation regarding the flexural and the shear behaviour of glass beams with length 900, 1300, 1700 mm and T cross-section is presented and discussed. T cross-sections were obtained by assembling glass web and glass flange. Some specimens were also reinforced internally in the web with steel plates of thickness 6 mm and depth 25 and 50 mm placed at the bottom portion of the beams for the entire length of the beams themselves. Three specimens for each investigated series were tested in flexure focusing on the flexural and shear response through the determination of the load-deflection curves and the crack patterns at rupture identifying the effects of steel plate…

Ultimate load analysis of plate foundations

1973

The behaviour of circular plates used as isolated foundations is investigated on the basis of earlier studies[6], [7] of the limit state of indefinite plates resting on elastoplastic continua and subjected to distributed loads. The upshot is an easy-to-use procedure of ultimate load analysis that permits the determination of: --the limit load for simultaneous collapse of plate and continuum --and the limit load for collapse of the continuum only according to the different behaviour of the two elements constituting the system.

Strain gradient plasticity, strengthening effects and plastic limit analysis

2010

Abstract Within the framework of isotropic strain gradient plasticity, a rate-independent constitutive model exhibiting size dependent hardening is formulated and discussed with particular concern to its strengthening behavior. The latter is modelled as a (fictitious) isotropic hardening featured by a potential which is a positively degree-one homogeneous function of the effective plastic strain and its gradient. This potential leads to a strengthening law in which the strengthening stress, i.e. the increase of the plastically undeformed material initial yield stress, is related to the effective plastic strain through a second order PDE and related higher order boundary conditions. The plas…

A Simulation Based Analysis of an Multi Objective Diffusive Load Balancing Algorithm

2018

In this paper, we presented a further development of our research on developing an optimal software-hardware mapping framework. We used the Petri Net model of the complete hardware and software High Performance Computing (HPC) system running a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) application, to simulate the behaviour of the proposed diffusive two level multi-objective load-balancing algorithm. We developed an meta-heuristic algorithm for generating an approximation of the Pareto-optimal set to be used as reference. The simulations showed the advantages of this algorithm over other diffusive algorithms: reduced computational and communication overhead and robustness due to low dependence on u…

2010

Research has noticed that imparting TDD-like testing to an early computing curriculum is challenging because it increases technical and cognitive load for the students. This paper addresses the challenge with a software-based solution constructed to facilitate the process of writing tests. The solution allows using a compact while efficient syntax for formulating tests, writing tests into JavaDoc comments, thus close to the source code that implements intended functionalities, and automates the generation of actual test code. The constructed solution -- the ComTest tool -- has now been used in four introductory level programming course offerings. The paper presents the tool and concludes wi…
