Sensitivity and Specificity of Stability Criteria for Immediately Loaded Splinted Maxillary Implants
2014
Background To assess the suitability of dental implants for immediate loading, primary stability is usually evaluated intraoperatively. Purpose This retrospective study aimed to assess the suitability of three stability parameters – namely, insertion torque (IT), implant stability quotient (ISQ; measured by resonance frequency analysis), and Periotest (PT) values – as potential predictors for the risk of nonosseointegration of immediately loaded splinted implants. The stability parameters were routinely collected under immediate loading. Materials and Methods Nineteen patients with 11 edentulous and 8 partially edentulous maxillae were treated with 105 dental implants, which were immediatel…
TuBaFrost: European Virtual Tumor Tissue Banking
2006
TuBaFrost is a consortium responsible for the task to create a virtual European human frozen tumor tissue bank, composed of high quality frozen tumor tissue collections with corresponding accurate diagnosis stored in European cancer centers and universities, searchable on the Internet, providing rules for access and use and a code of conduct to comply with the various legal and ethical regulations in European countries. Such infrastructure would enlarge tissue availability and accessibility in large amounts of specified or even rare tumor samples. Design of an infrastructure for European residual tissue banking with the described characteristics, clear focus points emerge that can be broken…
Reuse of electric vehicle batteries in buildings: An integrated load match analysis and life cycle assessment approach
2019
Abstract The increasing use of renewable energy technologies for electricity generation in buildings will require a growing number of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance the reliability of electricity supply. The increasing number of retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries, expected from the automotive sector, can match this demand as EV batteries can be used as BESS, considering that they have about 80% of their original energy capacity. In this context, the study aims at examining the system, consisting of a BESS made by retired Li-ion EV batteries, a photovoltaic plant (20 kW) and the electricity grid, that provides the electricity required by an existing nearly net zero res…
A novel traffic splitting policy for performance improvement in wireless mesh networks
2009
Wireless mesh networks are expected to play an important role in the next-generation wireless communication systems as it can provide wide coverage and scalable broadband Internet access services. However, as more traffic is injected into the network it may lead to throughput degradation, packet loss and longer transmission delay. In this paper, we argue that network performance can be improved by cross-layer design over multiple layers and load balancing based on service types. Correspondingly, a novel traffic splitting policy which can potentially utilize diverse paths for transmitting traffic flows of different service types from the same router has been proposed and investigated. Such a…
Computer-assisted preparation in conference interpreting
2017
Preparation has been proposed in the literature as one of the most important phases of an interpreting assignment, especially if the subject is highly specialised. Preparing an assignment in advance aims at bridging the linguistic and extra-linguistic gap between conference participants and interpreters and at reducing the cognitive load during interpretation. For these reasons it is considered crucial in ensuring higher interpreting quality. Yet, preparation is generally time-consuming and interpreters may often experience the feeling of not knowing exactly how to perform this task efficiently. Information technology could change this. Even though the first computer-assisted interpreting s…
CFRP sheets bonded to natural stone: interfacial phenomena
2004
The effectiveness of the reinforcing technique consisting of fiber reinforced polymer sheets bonded to the structural elements depends on a good connection at the joint. This has to be able to ensure the transfer length of the shear stress in order to avoid a premature failure due to debonding. In this paper, the bond phenomenon at the interface is examined with reference to the calcarenite stone and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets in order to evaluate the possibility of utilizing this technique on masonry structural members, consisting of calcarenite ashlars and mortar. An experimental investigation is carried out on nine specimens obtained by applying unidirectional CFRP she…
Optimization of CASA-Mot Analysis of Donkey Sperm : optimum Frame Rate and Values of Kinematic Variables for Different Counting Chamber and Fields
2020
In order to optimize the donkey sperm motility analysis by the CASA (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis)-Mot system, twelve ejaculates were collected from six jackasses. Capillary loaded chamber (CLC), ISAS®
Growth stage and conditions affect sorbitol:sucrose ratio in peach source and sink organs
2008
Along with sucrose, sorbitol represents the major photosynthetic product and the main form of translocated carbon in peach. In leaves, the ability to synthesize and accumulate sorbitol and sucrose increases with leaf age or distance from the apex until full maturity. Also, in the internodes of a growing shoot sorbitol:sucrose ratio (SOR:SUC) increases with distance from the apex. In mature leaves, SOR:SUC increases in response to fruit sink removal and water deficit, due mainly to sorbitol rather than sucrose accumulation. Data from ‘Encore’ peach show that SOR:SUC remains fairly constant around 2:1 from the leaf blade all the way to the fruit peduncle and drops sharply in the fruit flesh a…
Effects of PCSK9 inhibitors on HDL cholesterol efflux and serum cholesterol loading capacity in familial hypercholesterolemia subjects: a multi-lipid…
2022
Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), beyond regulating LDL cholesterol (LDL-c) plasma levels, exerts several pleiotropic effects by modulating lipid metabolism in extrahepatic cells such as macrophages. Macrophage cholesterol homeostasis depends on serum lipoprotein functions, including the HDL capacity to promote cell cholesterol efflux (CEC) and the serum capacity to promote cell cholesterol loading (CLC). The aim of this observational study was to investigate the effect of PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9-i) treatment on HDL-CEC and serum CLC in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). 31 genetically confirmed FH patients were recruited. Blood was collected and serum is…
