Employee shirking and overworking: modelling the unintended consequences of work organisation
2020
Underworking (i.e. shirking) and overworking of employees can have detrimental effects for the individual and the organisation. We develop a computational model to investigate how work structure, specifically the way in which managers distribute work tasks amongst employees, impacts work intensity and working time. The model draws on theories from economics, psychology and management, and on empirical observations. The simulations show that when managers correctly estimate task difficulty, but undervalue the employee’s competence, opportunities for shirking are provided due to longer deadlines. Similarly, if managers overvalue the employee’s competence, they set tighter deadlines leading to…
Energy Retrofit. A Case Study—Santi Romano Dormitory on the Palermo University
2021
Electrical and thermal consumption related to buildings, whether civil, commercial, public, or of any other kind, is very much in focus today. With today’s targets for energy savings, reduction of consumption, and environmental impact, it is necessary to carry out energy retrofits to modernize installations and their management. The realization of an effective improvement requires a careful analysis of the case study because each category of building has different requirements such as different load profiles and different installations and needs. This was carried out by studying the electrical and thermal load profiles. A good initial energy audit can provide the retrofit solutions capable …
Opportunistic traffic Offloadings Mechanisms for Mobile/4G Networks
In the last few years, it has been observed a drastic surge of data traffic demand from mobile personal devices (smartphones and tablets) over cellular networks [1]. Even though a significant improvement in cellular bandwidth provisioning is expected with LTE-Advanced systems, the overall situation is not expected to change significantly. In fact, the diffusion of M2M and IoT devices is expected to increase at an exponential pace (the share of M2M devices is predicted to increase 5x by 2018 [1]) while the capacity of the cellular network is expected to increase linearly [1]. In order to meet such a high demand and to increase the capacity of the channel, multiple offloading techniques are c…

ChemInform Abstract: Photochemical Transformations of Some Neoclerodane and Labdane Diterpene Ketones.
2010
Some neoclerodane (2–4) and labdane (5 and 6) diterpene ketones having a β- or γ-hydroxy function, an α-epoxy group, or an α-olefinic double bond have been irradiated at λ = 313 nm in dry solvents (benzene or methanol). Fruticolone (2) yielded the naturally occurring 5,6-seco-neoclerodan-6,1α-olide derivative fruticolide (1), while hispanolone (5) gave the δ-lactone 8, both transformations involving a Norrish type I photoreaction. The α,β-unsaturated ketone derivative 4 was transformed into 7 by a stereoselective intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction involving its furanic 13(16)-double bond. Finally, the α-epoxy ketone 6 was rearranged to the 10(98)abeo-labda-7,9-dione derivative 10. …
Fabric evolution and the related swelling behaviour of a sand/bentonite mixture upon hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings
2015
This experimental study investigates the swelling behaviour of an 80/20 sand/bentonite mixture and the associated fabric evolution under different hydro-chemo-mechanical loadings. Free and confined swelling tests are performed on specimens compacted to different dry densities and wetted with different pore fluids. Controlled suction confined swelling tests are performed to determine the suction–swelling pressure relationship for two different densities. An extensive microstructural characterisation is performed to relate the observed swelling behaviour to the evolution of the different pore networks during wetting. Based on the microstructural analysis, an expression is proposed to determi…
D2/H2 adsorption selectivity on FAU zeolites at 77.4 K: Influence of Si/Al ratio and cationic composition
2018
Abstract Equilibrium D2/H2 adsorption selectivity was determined at 77.4 K below 1000 hPa for a series of FAU type zeolites X exchanged with different cations (Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+ and Mn2+). In addition NaY, DAY (dealuminated Y) and pure silica CHA and MFI zeolites were studied. Two experimental approaches were used to determine the D2/H2 adsorption selectivity: direct determination at the thermodynamic equilibrium from manometric coadsorption experiments and calculations by Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) from single gas adsorption isotherms. While these two approaches are not in quantitative agreement, they reveal similar trends. At low loading ( MnX > LiX > CaX ≈ NaX > …
Work-related upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in paediatric laparoscopic surgery. A multicenter survey.
2013
Abstract Background Surgeons are at risk for developing work-related musculoskeletal symptoms (WMS). The present study aims to examine the physical factors and their association with WMS among pediatric laparoscopic surgeons. Methods A questionnaire consisting of 21 questions was created and mailed to 25 pediatric laparoscopic surgeons (LG). 23/25 surgeons (92%) completed the survey. The questionnaire was analyzed and then split into 2 groups. Group 1 (LG1) included surgeons with greater laparoscopic experience, and group 2 (LG2) included surgeons with less important laparoscopic experience. In addition, we constructed and sent to the same surgeons a similar questionnaire focused on WMS aft…
Elaboration et caractérisation d’une structure composite (sable et déchets plastiques recyclés) : Amélioration de la résistance par des charges en ar…
2018
This project aims at conceiving(designing) one paves with plastic waste got back in the discharges and with mixture of sand and gravel. This pavement that must be of use to the realization of pavements and public highways, must thus be capable of answering the technical conditions of its use. However, the fabrication method and the used material(equipment) must be rather simple to allow its fast handling by little qualified workers and a low(weak) production cost to be economically competitive. Pavements will thus be tested to identify their performance at the same time mechanical and physical then used on life-size to understand(include) their ageing because of their wear. Finally, an equi…
