Local Rossby Wave Packet Amplitude, Phase Speed, and Group Velocity: Seasonal Variability and Their Role in Temperature Extremes
2020
AbstractTransient Rossby wave packets (RWPs) are a prominent feature of the synoptic to planetary upper-tropospheric flow at the midlatitudes. Their demonstrated role in various aspects of weather and climate prompts the investigation of characteristic properties like their amplitude, phase speed, and group velocity. Traditional frameworks for the diagnosis of the two latter have so far remained nonlocal in space or time, thus preventing a detailed view on the spatiotemporal evolution of RWPs. The present work proposes a method for the diagnosis of horizontal Rossby wave phase speed and group velocity locally in space and time. The approach is based on the analytic signal of upper-troposphe…
Deconvolution procedure of the UV-vis spectra. A powerful tool for the estimation of the binding of a model drug to specific solubilisation loci of b…
2015
UV-vis-spectra evolution of Nile Red loaded into Tween 20 micelles with pH and [Tween 20] have been analysed in a non-conventional manner by exploiting the deconvolution method. The number of buried sub-bands has been found to depend on both pH and bio-surfactant concentration, whose positions have been associated to Nile Red confined in aqueous solution and in the three micellar solubilisation sites. For the first time, by using an extended classical two-pseudo-phases-model, the robust treatment of the spectrophotometric data allows the estimation of Nile Red binding constant to the available loci. Hosting capability towards Nile Red is exalted by the pH enhancement. Comparison between bin…
Front propagation in the one-dimensional autocatalyticA+B→2Areaction with decay
1999
We consider front propagation in the autocatalytic scheme $A+\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}2A,$ where we also allow the A particles to decay, $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{A}0,$ with a constant decay rate $\ensuremath{\beta}.$ In a one dimensional, discrete, situation the A domain moves as a pulse, and its dynamics differs from what is found in higher dimensions. Thus the velocity of the pulse tends to a finite value when $\ensuremath{\beta}$ approaches from below the critical value ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{c},$ at which pulses die out. On the other hand, when approaching ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{c}$ from above, the mean lifetime of the pulse grows as $T\ensuremath{\propto}(\ensu…
Conservation of genetic diversity in artificially regenerated holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) populations
2004
Reforestation with autochtonous species should take into account the preservation of the variability and the geographical structure of genetic diversity in forest species. In order to provide empirical data, genetic composition of an artificial population of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) and its natural seed-origin population in Andalusia were analysed with six microsatellite loci. The genetic diversity indices applied show a reduction in the artificial stand if compared with the natural one, probably due to an inappropriate forester seed collection strategy limited to a few trees.
Factors affecting peak impact force during soccer headers and implications for the mitigation of head injuries
2020
It has been documented that up to 22% of all soccer injuries are concussions. This is in part due to players purposely using their head to direct the ball during play. To provide a more complete understanding of head trauma in soccer athletes, this study characterized the effects of four soccer ball characteristics (size, inflation pressure, mass, velocity) on the resulting peak impact force as it relates to the potential for incurring neurophysiological changes. A total of six hundred trials were performed on size 4 and 5 soccer balls as well as a novel lightweight soccer ball. Impact force was measured with a force plate and ball velocity was determined using motion capture. These data we…
A photovoltaic charging system of an electrically assisted tricycle for touristic purposes
2013
In this paper the design, realization and testing of a photovoltaic charging system suitable for the management of an electrically power assisted tricycle are described. This vehicle uses a photovoltaic module as a source of electric energy for the battery recharging. In this work, an overview on the needs of sustainable mobility and on the commercial electrically power assisted velocipedes is presented. The electrical rickshaw prototype, developed in the SDELab laboratory of the University of Palermo, is presented in detail, underlining the design, implementation and developing phases of the photovoltaic charging system assembled on the velocipede. Moreover, tests oriented on the setting u…
A study of the B and Be star population in the field of the LMC open cluster NGC 2004 with VLT-FLAMES
2005
Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster LMC-NGC2004 and its surrounding region have been obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. 25 Be stars were discovered; the proportion of Be stars compared to B-type stars is found to be of the same order in the LMC and in the Galaxy fields. 23 hot stars were discovered as spectroscopic binaries (SB1 and SB2), 5 of these are found to be eclipsing systems from the MACHO database, with periods of a few days. About 75% of the spectra in our sample are polluted by hydrogen (Halpha and Hgamma), [SII] and [NII] nebular lines. These lines are typical of HII regions. They could be associated with patchy nebulosities with a bi-m…
Overland flow hydrodynamic characteristics in rough beds at low Reynolds numbers
2022
This paper considers overland flow resistance at low Reynolds numbers through analysis of experimental runs carried out using water only and water/glycerol mixtures. We first examined the power relationship between the Darcy–Weisbach friction factor f and the Reynolds number Re to obtain the values of the K coefficient and b exponent. These results confirmed the applicability of the values of b suggested in literature, while K required a specific calibration for laminar open-channel flows. The analysis revealed that transition from a laminar to turbulent flow regime for water only flows occurred at a threshold value of Re equal to 500 as described historically. The estimate of f by the powe…
Efficacy of dulaglutide on vascular health indexes in subjects with type 2 diabetes: a randomized trial
2021
Abstract Background Recent cardiovascular outcome trials have shown significant reductions in major cardiovascular (CV) events with glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 receptor agonists. Additionally, adjunctive surrogates for cardiovascular risk validated by some studies include arterial stiffness and endothelial function indexes. To date, no randomized trial has addressed the possible effects of antidiabetic interventional drugs such as GLP1 agonists on endothelial and arterial stiffness indexes as surrogate markers of vascular damage. Aims We aimed to evaluate metabolic efficacy and surrogate vascular efficacy endpoints of once-weekly dulaglutide (1.5 mg) plus traditional antidiabetic treatmen…
Platelet-endothelial interaction in tumor angiogenesis and microcirculation
2003
Activated platelets release angiogenic growth factors and have therefore been proposed to contribute to tumor angiogenesis within a potentially prothrombotic tumor microcirculation. The aim of the study was to investigate interactions of platelets with the angiogenic microvascular endothelium of highly vascularized solid tumors during growth and in response to endothelial stimulation in comparison with normal subcutaneous tissue. Experiments were performed in the dorsal skinfold chamber preparation of C57BL/6J mice bearing the Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC-1) or methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma (BFS-1). Fluorescently labeled rolling and adherent platelets, red blood cell velocity, and ve…
