Phase Composition and Nanoporous Structure of Core and Surface in the Modified Granules of NH4NO3
2018
The article deals with the study of phase composition and crystal nanoporous structure of core and surface layer of porous ammonium nitrate (PAN). The research results, presented in the article, show that the proposed way to generate PAN allows to provide the granule porous structure without changing of its phase composition. The crystal structure of granules after the humidification and heat treatment has some changes due to the increase of the number of pores. The change of crystal structure, in turn, allows to open access to nanopores that are located in the volume of granules. This allows to increase the holding capacity indicator of granules. An important result of conducted researches…
Thermal-hydraulic study of the DEMO divertor cassette body cooling circuit equipped with a liner and two reflector plates
2021
Abstract In the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 – “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the steady-state thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. The research activity has been focussed onto the most recent design of the Cassette Body (CB) cooling circuit, consistent with the DEMO baseline 2017 and equipped with a liner and two Reflector Plates (RPs), whose main functions are to protect the underlying vacuum pump hole from the radiation arising from plasma and shield the PFCs inlet distributors, respectively. The research ca…

2019
Abstract Within the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 - “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. The research activity has been focused onto the most recent design of the Cassette Body (CB) cooling circuit equipped with a Liner, whose main function is to protect the underlying vacuum pump hole from the radiation arising from the plasma. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the Finite Volume Method and adopting the commercial…
Temperature independence of birefringence and group velocity dispersion in photonic crystal fibres
2004
Experimental results are presented for the dependence of the dispersion and the birefringence of a highly birefringent photonic crystal fibre with temperature. It is shown that, unlike conventional optical fibres, where temperature induces stress regions between the different materials present in their structure, photonic crystal fibres exhibit no dependence with temperature of these optical properties owing to the single material nature of their structures.
Low-Temperature Coherent Thermal Conduction in Thin Phononic Crystal Membranes
2016
In recent years, the idea of controlling phonon thermal transport coherently using phononic crystals has been introduced. Here, we extend our previous numerical studies of ballistic low-temperature heat transport in two-dimensional hole-array phononic crystals, and concentrate on the effect of the lattice periodicity. We find that thermal conductance can be either enhanced or reduced by large factors, depending on the the lattice period. Analysis shows that both the density of states and the average group velocity are strongly affected by the periodic structuring. The largest effect for the reduction seen for larger period structures comes from the strong reduction of the group velocities, …
Near-field characterization of Bragg mirrors engraved in surface plasmon waveguides
2004
International audience; Surface plasmon waveguides (SPW's) are metal ridges featuring widths in the micrometer range and thicknesses of a few tens of nanometers. A focused ion beam has been used to carve microscatterers into gold SPW's and the near-field distributions around these microstructures are observed by means of photon scanning tunneling microscopy (PSTM). On the basis of near-field images, we show that a finite length periodic arrangement of narrow slits can reflect a surface plasmon mode propagating along a SPW. The reflection efficiency of the micrograting is found to depend upon the number of slits, the period of the grating, and the incident wavelength. The optimum reflection …
Frequency tunable polarization and intermodal modulation instability in high birefringence holey fiber
2009
International audience; We present an experimental analysis of polarization and intermodal noise-seeded parametric amplification, in which dispersion is phase matched by group velocity mismatch between either polarization or spatial modes in birefringent holey fiber with elliptical core composed of a triple defect. By injecting quasi-CW intense linearly polarized pump pulses either parallel or at 45 degrees with respect to the fiber polarization axes, we observed the simultaneous generation of polarization or intermodal modulation instability sidebands. Furthermore, by shifting the pump wavelength from 532 to 625 nm, we observed a shift of polarization sidebands from 3 to 8 THz, whereas int…
The rheological behavior of HDPE/LDPE blends 4. Instability phenomena in capillary flow
1984
Experimental data, relative to instability phenomena in capillary flow, have been collected for HDPE/LDPE blends already characterized from a rheological viewpoint. The data comprise morphological observations as well as the determination of critical parameters as a function of the blend composition and of the processing conditions.
Characterization of micro-fibrillated cellulose fiber suspension flow using multi scale velocity profile measurements
2017
Rheological properties and boundary layer flow behavior of Micro Fibrillated Cellulose (MFC) suspended in water was studied using a novel velocity profiling rheometric technique. The method is based on measuring stationary velocity profiles of fluid flow in a straight tube simultaneously by Doppler Optical Coherence Tomography (DOCT) and by Ultrasound Velocity Profiling (UVP). The high resolution DOCT provides velocity profiles near the transparent tube wall, while UVP yields corresponding information in the interior parts of the flow. The data from the two instruments is combined into a comprehensive velocity profile including both the thin boundary layer near the wall and the interior par…
Power losses comparison between Silicon Carbide and Silicon devices for an isolated DC-DC converter
2021
In recent years, new efficient power devices have been implemented. Silicon Carbide has replaced silicon as regards the production and the utilization of many devices, such as MOSFETs, diodes, IGBTs and many others. SiC devices are characterized by a low reverse recovery charge, high carrier saturation velocity, by which it is possible to work at high frequency, and high breakdown voltage. Thanks to the great thermal conductivity and the wide bandgap, these devices can operate at high temperature and reach high voltages and currents. What is important to stress is the fact that power losses in SiC devices are lower than the silicon ones. These are the reasons why these devices are utilized …
