β-delayed fission of192,194At

By using the recoil-fission correlation technique, the exotic process of beta-delayed fission ($\ensuremath{\beta}$DF) was unambiguously identified in the very neutron-deficient nuclei ${}^{192,194}$At in experiments at the velocity filter SHIP at Gesellschaft f\"ur Schwerionenforschung (GSI). The upper limits for the total kinetic energy release in fission of ${}^{192,194}$Po, being the daughter products of ${}^{192,194}$At after ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}/EC$ decay, were estimated. The possibility of an unusually high $\ensuremath{\beta}$DF probability for ${}^{192}$At is discussed.

Solid armatures in electromagnetic rail launchers have to undergo severe electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal stresses. These stresses are unevenly distributed in the armature mainly due to the velocity skin effect. Contrasting this effect reduces the peak to average ratio of the stresses and allows better performance of the device. In liquid helium two wave modes are possible. Their properties may be analysed by solving the thermohydrodynamical equations under the condition that the tangential component of the normal fluid velocity is vanishing on the walls. In the present paper, these two types of wave propagation are determined for a plane-parallel capillary with the heat conduction and the thermal expansion being neglected and with the width of the capillary being much smaller than the penetration depth of a viscous wave. We present a calculation of the cross section and the event generator of the reaction $\ensuremath{\pi}e\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}e\ensuremath{\gamma}.$ This reaction is sensitive to the pion generalized dipole polarizabilities, namely, the longitudinal electric ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{L}{(q}^{2}),$ the transverse electric ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{T}{(q}^{2}),$ and the magnetic $\ensuremath{\beta}{(q}^{2})$ which, in the real-photon limit, reduce to the ordinary electric and magnetic polarizabilities $\overline{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\beta}},$ respectively. Abstract Neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay of the 76Ge, 82Se, 128Te, 130Te and 136Xe nuclei is discussed in terms of the associated nuclear matrix element (NME). The effects of the size of the single-particle model space and the occupancies of individual orbits on the NME are discussed by using the proton–neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with effective, G-matrix-derived nuclear forces. It is found that only in some cases the orbital occupancies play a decisive role for the size of the NME, whereas the inclusion of all the spin–orbit partners is essential to achieve a NME of reasonable quality. Abstract The neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decays of 76Ge, 82Se and 136Xe to the first excited 0 + states ( 0 1 + ) in 76Se, 82Kr and 136Ba are studied in calculations using different sizes of the single-particle model spaces and different occupancies of the individual orbits. Evolution of polarization orientations in a flat universe with vector perturbations: CMB and quasistellar objects

Various effects produced by vector perturbations (vortical peculiar velocity fields) of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background are considered. In the presence of this type of perturbations, the polarization vector rotates. A formula giving the rotation angle is obtained and, then, it is used to prove that this angle depends on both the observation direction and the emission redshift. Hence, rotations are different for distinct quasars and also for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation coming along different directions (from distinct points of the last scattering surface). Nuclear matrix elements of ββ decay from β-decay data

Abstract The evaluation of the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of the two-neutrino double beta ( 2 ν β β ) decay and neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay using the proton–neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) is addressed. In particular, the extraction of a proper value of the proton–neutron particle–particle interaction parameter, g pp , of this theory is analyzed in detail. Evidence is shown, that it can be misleading to use the experimental half-life of the 2 ν β β decay to extract a value for g pp . Rather, arguments are given in favour of using the available data on single beta decay for this purpose.
Relative proton andγwidths of astrophysically important states in30S studied in theβ-delayed decay of31Ar

Resonances just above the proton threshold in S-30 affect the P-29(p, gamma)S-30 reaction under astrophysical conditions. The (p,gamma)-reaction rate is currently determined indirectly and depends on the properties of the relevant resonances. We present here a method for finding the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths of resonances in S-30. The widths are determined from the beta 2p- and beta p gamma-decay of Ar-31, which is produced at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility at the European research organization CERN. The beta decay of five heavy, neutron-rich nuclei, Pt-203,Pt-204 and Ir200-202, has been investigated following relativistic cold fragmentation reactions of lead projectiles using the FRS + RISING setup at GSI. This paper reports on the study of the low-lying states in the decay daughter nuclei Au-203,Au-204 and Pt200-202. The characteristic gamma rays for each nucleus have been determined using beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy. Tentative level schemes, relative intensities, and apparent beta feedings are provided.
