Abstract Chromatin insulators are regulatory elements that determine domains of genetic functions. We have previously described the characterization of a 265 bp insulator element, termed sns, localized at the 3′ end of the early histone H2A gene of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. This sequence contains three cis-acting elements (Box A, Box B, and Box C + T) all needed for the enhancer-blocking activity in both sea urchin and human cells. Epistatic interactions between pterin and carotenoid genes modulate intra-morph color variation in a lizard.

Color polymorphisms have become a major topic in evolutionary biology and substantial efforts have been devoted to the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for originating such colorful systems. Within-morph continuous variation, on the other hand, has been neglected in most of the studies. Here, we combine spectrophotometric/visual modeling and genetic data to study the mechanisms promoting continuous variation within categorical color morphs of Podarcis muralis. Our results suggest that intra-morph variability in the pterin-based orange morph is greater compared to white and yellow morphs. Powdery mildew resistance genes in Latvian barley varieties

Thirty-three Latvian spring barley varieties and breeding lines and 90individual progenies from these were tested at the seedling stage for their reaction to a maximum 37 isolates of Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei. Eighteen varieties were composed of two or three lines with different resistance. TwelveMl powdery mildew resistance genes(a1, a6, a7, a8, a9, a12, a13, at, g, k1, (Kr) and La) and four Ml genes closely linked to the Mla locus [a(Al2), a(No3), a(Em2) and a(Ru3)] were found. Mla8, Mlg and Mlk1 were the most frequent genes that occurred among the tested genotypes. The results confirm the pedigrees of all genotypes apart from cv. Agra and the breeding line L-215.

Molecular phylogeny, biogeographic history, and evolution of cave-dwelling taxa in the European harvestman genusIschyropsalis(Opiliones: Dyspnoi)

Abstract We estimated a multigenic molecular phylogeny and reconstructed biogeographic history for the European harvestman genus Ischyropsalis C.L. Koch 1839 (Dyspnoi). To reconstruct historical biogeographic patterns we conducted an algorithmic VIP analysis which revealed patterns consistent with a vicariance-dominated history. The existing morphology-based systematic framework for Ischyropsalis is mostly inconsistent with molecular phylogenetic results, and a new informal system is established that recognizes three main clades and several sub-clades. Abstract Creep and recovery tests have been performed to study the viscoelastic behavior of low oil content food emulsions. Formulations of salad dressings usually include modified starch (MS) due to its low cost and the special creamy texture if affords. The combination of starch with other natural gums may improve the quality of the product. Differential function of the phosphoglucomutase isozymes PGM1 and PGM2

A total of 13 metabolites thought to be possibly inhibitory were tested for their influence on PGM isozyme activities, each at several different concentrations. The analysis of statistical significance was based on enzyme activities obtained by densitometric measurements of starch gels. Five of the substances were found to inhibit PGM activity, three of which definitely and a further one probably led to a significantly stronger inhibition of the isozymes of the PGM2 locus than of PGM1 isozymes. They are (1) fructose-1,6-diphosphate, (2) adenosine triphosphate, (3) citrate, and (4) possibly 2,3-diphosphoglycerate.
