PV-Alert: A fog-based architecture for safeguarding vulnerable road users
2017
International audience; High volumes of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users (VRUs) have much higher casualty rates per mile; not surprising given their lack of protection from an accident. In order to alleviate the problem, sensing capabilities of smartphones can be used to detect, warn and safeguard these road users. In this research we propose an infrastructure-less fog-based architecture named PV-Alert (Pedestrian-Vehicle Alert) where fog nodes process delay sensitive data obtained from smartphones for alerting pedestrians and drivers before sending the data to the cloud for further analysis. Fog computing is considered in developing the architecture since it is an emer…
Comparative life-cycle assessment of conventional (double lane) and non-conventional (turbo and flower) roundabout intersections
2016
Abstract This research studied and compared different construction techniques for the road subgrade, embankment and pavement of different types of roundabout intersections in order to assess their environmental sustainability. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was carried out on double lane, turbo- and flower roundabouts. We considered virgin materials and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for the pavement construction. Also the environmental effects due to in situ lime stabilization of fine-grained soils were assessed in order to reduce the use of virgin material in road subgrades. The use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can lead to a significant reduction in pollutant emissions and energy …
Competitiveness of short sea shipping: the case of olive oil industry
2016
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the economic benefits of short sea shipping (SSS) in the shape of Motorways of the Sea (MoS) compared to road transport. The study cover a gap in agro-food economics and analyses the economic benefits of sea transport mode compared to road transport in the food trade between Spain and Italy for a specific product: olive oils. Design/methodology/approach – Three different transportation scenarios are considered (road only, road combined with accompanied SSS and road combined with unaccompanied SSS) linking the main olive oil production and consumption areas in Spain and Italy. In each scenario the cost per unit shipped have been calculated. …
Efficiency of Telematics Systems in Management of Operational Activities in Road Transport Enterprises
2020
Implemented in road transport enterprises (RTEs) on a large scale, telematics systems are dedicated both to the particular aspects of their operation and to the integrated fields of the total operational functioning of such entities. Hence, a research problem can be defined as the identification of their efficiency levels in the context of operational activities undertaken by RTEs (including more holistic effects, e.g., lowering fuel/energy consumption and negative environmental impacts). Current research studies refer to the efficiency of some particular modules, but there have not been any publications focused on describing the efficiency of telematics systems in a more integrated (holist…
Customer Orientation in Logistics as a Factor Influencing Business Competitive Advantage Creation
2017
Firms are constantly looking for the ways and solutions leading to business competitive advantage creation. One of the most effective and efficient solutions of getting and maintaining sustained, long-term competitive advantage by a firm is to implement customer orientation in business management. First of all, customer orientation - perceived as a key component of market orientation - facilitates identification and fulfilment of a customer’s needs and wants. In the recent years, apart from important place and role within the marketing concept, customer orientation has been more and more frequently taken into consideration in the logistics concept. The implementation of customer orientation…

Loģistikas sistēmas risinājuma izstrādāšana programmā MS Dynamics Axapta
2016
MS Dynamics Axapta ir viens no uzņēmumu resursu pārvaldības(angliski – EPR, enterprise resource planning) programmatūras produktiem, kuru izmanto biznesa vadībā. Produkts ietilpst Microsoft Dynamics „ģimenē”. MS Dynamics Axapta tradicionāli sastāv no konkrētām daļām – moduļiem(kopumā 19 pamatmoduļi), kas, tiekot izstrādātām jaunākajām versijām, pamatā nemainās, veidojot vienu un to pašu kodolu, kas ļauj speciālistiem strādāt ar dažāda gada versijām. Šie moduļi ir(kopš Axapta 2.5 versijas): 1)Galvenā virsgrāmata – virsgrāmata, tirdzniecības nodokļi,valūtas, pamatlīdzekļu funkcijas; 2)Banku pārvaldība - saņem un izmaksā naudu; 3)Debitori - pasūtījumi, preču pārvadāšana, rēķini; 4)Kreditori – pi…
Understanding Decision Support in Large-Scale Disasters: Challenges in Humanitarian Logistics Distribution
2017
Disasters are characterized by conflicting, uncertain, or lacking data. Nevertheless, humanitarian responders need to make rapid decisions. This is particularly true for the immediate response to a sudden onset disaster. Since most humanitarian decision support systems (DSS) make important assumptions on data availability and quality that are often not fulfilled in practice, decision-makers are largely left to their experience. In this paper, we identify three major challenges for an operational DSS to support distribution planning: (i) deep uncertainty; (ii) reflecting field conditions and constraints; and (iii) rapid humanitarian logistics modeling. We review the relevant theories and pro…
Requirements for Relief Distribution Decision-Making in Humanitarian Logistics
2020
Making efficient and effective decisions in the chaotic environment of humanitarian relief distribution (HRD) is challenging. Decision-makers need to concentrate on numerous decision factors categorized into decision objectives, variables, and constraints. Recent HRD literature focuses on optimizing procedures while neglecting the quantification of essential requirements (decision factors) for information systems to provide decision-making support. In this article, we address this gap by accumulating affecting decision factors from both literature and practice. We investigated the practical implications of these factors in HRD decision-making by measuring the preferences of a Delphi panel c…
A GIS-based method for evaluating the walkability of a pedestrian environment and prioritised investments
2020
Abstract Despite the large investments made in the construction and modernisation of railway infrastructure, poor quality pedestrian routes may discourage users from using public transport. In fact, very little attention is generally paid to pedestrian mobility. Therefore, a method for evaluating the quality of pedestrian paths and the accessibility to railway stations has been developed. This method considers the main factors influencing the walkability of an urban area and makes it possible to establish the priorities for intervention, i.e. to identify the arcs of a pedestrian network that require prioritised action. The methodology is a decision support tool that can be used by policymak…
