Mitochondrially encoded cysteine predicts animal lifespan

2007

Summary The role of genetic factors in the determination of lifespan is undisputed. However, numerous successful efforts to identify individual genetic modulators of longevity have not yielded yet a quantitative measure to estimate the lifespan of a species from scratch, merely based on its genomic constitution. Here, we report on a meta-examination of genome sequences from 248 animal species with known maximum lifespan, including mammals, birds, fish, insects, and helminths. Our analysis reveals that the frequency with which cysteine is encoded by mitochondrial DNA is a specific and phylogenetically ubiquitous molecular indicator of aerobic longevity: long-lived species synthesize respirat…

Hyperpolarized 1H long lived states originating from parahydrogen accessed by rf irradiation

2013

Hyperpolarization has found many applications in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). However, its usage is still limited to the observation of relatively fast processes because of its short lifetimes. This issue can be circumvented by storing the hyperpolarization in a slowly relaxing singlet state. Symmetrical molecules hyperpolarized by Parahydrogen Induced Hyperpolarization (PHIP) provide a straightforward access to hyperpolarized singlet states because the initial parahydrogen singlet state is preserved at almost any magnetic field strength. In these systems, which show a remarkably long 1H singlet state lifetime of several minutes, the conversion of t…

Quality of life after upper third molar removal: a prospective longitudinal study

2017

Background Third molar extraction is a very common procedure in Dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) and satisfaction of patients undergoing extraction of an upper third molar under local anesthesia. A second objective was to describe the evolution of self-reported pain measured in a visual analogue scale (VAS) in the 7 days after surgery and its relationship with pre- and intraoperative factors. Material and Methods A prospective longitudinal cohort study was made. Fifty-five patients received a questionnaire assessing social and working isolation, eating and speaking ability, diet modifications, sleep impairment, physical appearance, discomfort at sut…

Masseter and temporalis muscle electromyography findings after lower third molar extraction.

2018

Background The main clinical application of electromyography is to detect abnormalities in muscle function, to assess muscle activity for purposes of recruitment, and in the biomechanics of movement. Objectives To analyze electromyography (EMG) findings for masticatory muscles during chewing following surgical extraction of lower third molars, and to determine any correlation between pain, inflammation, trismus, and the EMG data registered. Material and Methods This prospective study included 31 patients. Surface EMG was used to study masseter and temporalis muscle function before lower third molar extraction and 72 hours and seven days after surgery. Clinical variables, pain, inflammation,…

Learning From Errors: Detecting Cross-Technology Interference in WiFi Networks

2018

In this paper, we show that inter-technology interference can be recognized using commodity WiFi devices by monitoring the statistics of receiver errors. Indeed, while for WiFi standard frames the error probability varies during the frame reception in different frame fields (PHY, MAC headers, and payloads) protected with heterogeneous coding, errors may appear randomly at any point during the time the demodulator is trying to receive an exogenous interfering signal. We thus detect and identify cross-technology interference on off-the-shelf WiFi cards by monitoring the sequence of receiver errors (bad PLCP, bad FCS, invalid headers, etc.) and propose two methods to recognize the source of in…

Dietary l-tryptophan leaves a lasting impression on the brain and the stress response

2017

AbstractComparative models suggest that effects of dietary tryptophan (Trp) on brain serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) neurochemistry and stress responsiveness are present throughout the vertebrate lineage. Moreover, hypothalamic 5-HT seems to play a central role in control of the neuroendocrine stress axis in all vertebrates. Still, recent fish studies suggest long-term effects of dietary Trp on stress responsiveness, which are independent of hypothalamic 5-HT. Here, we investigated if dietary Trp treatment may result in long-lasting effects on stress responsiveness, including changes in plasma cortisol levels and 5-HT neurochemistry in the telencephalon and hypothalamus of Atlantic sa…

Positron Annihilation in Defected Monocrystalline Gold Samples

2005

Angular distribution of the positron annihilation quanta was measured for monocrystalline gold samples, oriented in (110) and (111) directions. The samples were deformed by elongation for different deformation degrees. The S and W parameters as a function of deformation degree of the sample were determined. It was found that the dynamics of the dislocations and vacancy generation during the sliding of some crystallographic planes, depends on the crystallographic direction.

Positron Annihilation in Metals Defected by Action of the Tensile Force

2006

Results of experimental investigations of uniaxially elongated mono- and polycrystalline samples of several metals (Fe, Ta, Pd, Ag, and Au), performed using the positron annihilation methods, are reviewed. The dependences of the S-parameters and positron lifetimes on the relative elongation of the samples were presented. The data obtained for polycrystalline samples indicate that in the proportionality and limited proportionality regions the changes in the physical properties are governed mainly by generation of vacancies and by kinetics of formation and transformations of vacancy clusters occurring flrst of all on the grain boundaries of monocrystallites. In the region of plastic deformati…
