Fluxons in Josephson Transmission Lines

The superconducting Josephson junctions (Barone and Paterno 1982; Parmentier 1978; Lomdahl 1985; Likharev 1986; Pedersen 1986) have proven to be one of the most successful testing grounds for nonlinear wave theory; their use for information processing and storage is quite attractive. In the long Josephson junction or transmission line, the physical quantity of interest is a quantum of magnetic flux, or a fluxon, which has a soliton behavior. It is a remarkably robust and stable object, which can be easily manipulated at high speed and stored electronically. Consequently it should be used as a basic bit in information processing systems.

Changes in the trajectory of the radio jet in 0735+178?

We present multi-epoch 8.4 and 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array images of the BL Lac object 0735+178. The images confirm the presence of a twisted jet with two sharp apparent bends of 90$^{\circ}$ within two milliarcseconds of the core, resembling a helix in projection. The observed twisted geometry could be the result of precession of the jet inlet, but is more likely produced by pressure gradients in the external medium through which the jet propagates. Quasi-stationary components are observed at the locations of the 90$^{\circ}$ bends, possibly produced by differential Doppler boosting. THE ACCELERATING JET OF 3C 279

Analysis of the proper motions of the subparsec scale jet of the quasar 3C 279 at 15 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array shows significant accelerations in four of nine superluminal features. Analysis of these motions is combined with the analysis of flux density light curves to constrain values of Lorentz factor and viewing angle (and their derivatives) for each component. The data for each of these components are consistent with significant changes to the Lorentz factor, viewing angle, and azimuthal angle, suggesting jet bending with changes in speed. VSOP monitoring of the Quasar 1928+738

One limitation of the VSOP (VLBI Space Observatory Program) mission is that several famous superluminal sources such as 3C273 cannot be monitored with good uv-coverage throughout the lifetime of the VSOP Mission at regular intervals that are spaced closely enough to follow the evolution in the fine-scale source-structure. The reason for this is that the HALCA spacecraft cannot#observe sources outside certain restricted ranges of sun angle, defined to be the time variable angle between the source and the sun. Measuring longitudinal wave speed in solids: two methods and a half

2006

Three methods to analyse longitudinal wave propagation in metallic rods are discussed. Two of these methods also prove to be useful for measuring the sound propagation speed. The experimental results, as well as some interpretative models built in the context of a workshop on mechanical waves at the Graduate School for Pre-Service Physics Teacher Education, Palermo University, are described. Some considerations about observed modifications in trainee teachers' attitudes to utilizing physics experiments to build pedagogical activities are discussed.

Non-local stiffness and damping models for shear-deformable beams

This paper presents the dynamics of a non-local Timoshenko beam. The key assumption involves modeling non-local effects as long-range volume forces and moments mutually exerted by non-adjacent beam segments, that contribute to the equilibrium of any beam segment along with the classical local stress resultants. Elastic and viscous long-range volume forces/moments are endowed in the model. They are built as linearly depending on the product of the volumes of the interacting beam segments and on generalized measures of their relative motion, based on the pure deformation modes of the beam. Convective Instability in a Horizontal Porous Channel with Permeable and Conducting Side Boundaries

The heating from below is modelled by a uniform flux, while the top wall is assumed to be isothermal. The side boundaries are considered as permeable and perfectly conducting. The linear stability of the basic state is studied for the normal mode perturbations.
