LARGE-SCALE SIMULATIONS IN CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS —THE NEED FOR A TERAFLOP COMPUTER

1992

The introduction of vector processors {“supercomputers” with a performance in the range of 109 floating point operations (1 GFLOP) per second} has had an enormous impact on computational condensed matter physics. The possibility of a substantially enhanced performance by massively parallel processors (“teraflop” machines with 1012 floating point operations per second) will allow satisfactory treatment of a large range of important scientific problems which have to a great extent thus far escaped numerical resolution. The present paper describes only a few examples (out of a long list of interesting research problems!) for which the availability of “teraflops” will allow spectacular progres…

Using DNA barcodes to detect non-indigenous species: the case of the Asian copepod Mesocyclops pehpeiensis Hu, 1943 (Cyclopidae) in two regions of th…

2015

To date, little attention has been paid to analyses of copepods as exotic species. The genusMesocyclops, a freshwater cyclopoid, has a worldwide distribution, but individual species within the genus have a quite restricted geographical range.Mesocyclops pehpeiensisHu, 1943 is a Central-East Asian species, rarely found outside of this area, and when it appears should be considered as non-native. Based on morphology and DNA barcode analyses, using the COI gene, we confirmed records ofM. pehpeiensisin two ponds in Mexico and in a rice paddy near Valencia, Spain. The morphology of this species, based on morphometric analyses, was found to be variable, but DNA barcoding confirmed the same identi…

Seasonal zooplankton patterns in a shallow oligotrophic lake: Loch Rusky (Scotland)

1990

The zooplankton taxa and their seasonal distribution are describeb for Loch Rusky, a shallow oligotrophic lake in the central region of Scotland. 15 species were indentified: 11 Rotifera, 2 Cladocera and 2 Copepoda. Only 5 species Polyarthra remata, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia terminalis, Trichocerca sp. and Eudiaptomus gracilis occurred in sufficient numbers to facilitate a description of their seasonal pattern. The annual zooplankton variation was dominated by rotifers for most of the year, but copepods (E. gracilis, Cyclops sp.) only were dominant in the epilimnion during summer. It is presumed that this pattern was the result of the rotifers faster rate of reproduction and higher graz…

Description of the final instar of Trichomalopsis peregrina (Hymenoptera, Pteromalidae), with data and comments on the preimaginal stages

2007

The preimaginal stages of T. peregrina are described. The egg displays a sculptured chorion, which is found only on those deposited externally. The immature larvae are characterized by their peculiarities in (a) a setose ring on the thoracic and abdominal segments, (b) an anal notch and (c) size and the sensory structures of the head capsule. The final instar is described and illustrated. Morphological structures of diagnostic value are discussed. The most salient character shown by the mature larva of this species lies in the epistoma, which is complete. Resumen. Se describen las fases de huevo y larva de T. peregrina . El huevo, como es característico en los que se depositan externamente,…

Comparison between two MBR pilot plants treating synthetic shipboard slops: effect of salinity increase on biological performance, biomass activity a…

2015

The paper reports the main results of an experimental campaign carried out on two bench scale pilot plants for treatment of synthetic shipboard slops. In particular, two membrane bioreactors (MBRs) with submerged configuration were analyzed. One MBR pilot plant (namely, Line A) was fed with synthetic shipboard slop and was subjected to a gradual increase of salinity. Conversely, the second MBR pilot plant (namely, Line B) was fed with the same synthetic shipboard slop but without salt addition, therefore operating as a “control” unit. Organic carbon, hydrocarbons and ammonium removal, kinetic constants, extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) production and membranes fouling rates have be…

An Autochthonous Human Case of Fasciolopsiasis in Nepal

2019

Fasciolopsiasis is rarely known as the parasitic disease in Nepal. Herein, we report a case of fasciolopsiasis in a 22-year-old man who was admitted in the hospital with abdominal pain, distension and loss of appetite for a month. He had previously diagnosed with acute viral hepatitis but, his abdominal pain was not resolving despite improvement in his liver function and general condition. During endoscopy an adult digenean worm was seen in the first part of the duodenum. After isolation, the worm was identified morphologically as Fasciolopsis buski. Microscogic examination of the patient's stool revealed eggs with a morphology consistent with F. buski. Eggs were yellow-brown, ellipsoidal, …

Membrane bioreactors for treatment of saline wastewater contaminated by hydrocarbons (diesel fuel): An experimental pilot plant case study

2016

Abstract The paper reports the main results of an experimental campaign performed on a membrane bioreactor pilot plant designed to treat synthetic shipboard slops. The experimental campaign was divided into two phases: salinity acclimation up to 20 g NaCl L −1 (Phase I) and hydrocarbon (diesel fuel) dosing (Phase II). The observed results show that the carbon removal was not severely affected by the wastewater features. Conversely, respirometric tests showed that nitrification was strongly affected by the salinity (33% of nitrification efficiency at 20 g NaCl L −1 – Phase I) as a result of the salinity in the autotrophic biomass. Moreover, the sludge viscosity increased during Phase II due …

Molecular-genetic-based contribution to the taxonomy of theAcanthocyclops robustusgroup

2013

Long-standing taxonomic problems involving the Acanthocyclops robustus–vernalis complex of freshwater cyclopoids have not been resolved. After Kiefer's designation of A. robustus Sars as an older synonym of Acanthocycops americanus Marsh, a lot of data indicating their differentiation have been accumulated. To handle this taxonomical problem, representative populations from type localities of the respective taxa and from other European and US sites were analyzed morphologically and genetically using mitochondrial COI and 12S rRNA. Molecular-genetic analysis revealed that the three species described at the end of the nineteenth century: A. robustus, A. americanus and A. vernalis are well-sep…
