TLR7 controls VSV replication in CD169(+) SCS macrophages and associated viral neuroinvasion
2019
Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is an insect-transmitted rhabdovirus that is neurovirulent in mice. Upon peripheral VSV infection, CD169+ subcapsular sinus (SCS) macrophages capture VSV in the lymph, support viral replication, and prevent CNS neuroinvasion. To date, the precise mechanisms controlling VSV infection in SCS macrophages remain incompletely understood. Here, we show that Toll-like receptor-7 (TLR7), the main sensing receptor for VSV, is central in controlling lymph-borne VSV infection. Following VSV skin infection, TLR7−/− mice display significantly less VSV titers in the draining lymph nodes (dLN) and viral replication is attenuated in SCS macrophages. In contrast to effects o…
ABSTRACT This article studies M…
Lietotnes un to izmantošana ikdienas dzīves organizēšanā
2019
Ikdienas dzīves pārvaldīšanas rīki 21.gadsimta pasaulē ir kļuvuši par vienu no populārākajām viedtālruņu funkcijām. Cilvēki uztic savu veselību un ikdienas darbu plānus un ļauj tehnoloģijām tās kontrolēt. Šis process izvirza sarežģītāku mērķu un ieguvumu analīzi, kuras šīs inovācijas sniedz ikdienas dzīves uzturēšanai. Ikdienas dzīves organizēšanas (šajā pētījumā – veselības un dienas organizēšanas) lietotnes ir tikai daļa no tā, kas pieejamas viedtālruņos, taču tās ir vienas no lietotākajām viedtālruņu lietotāju vidū. Tās atšķiras satura un mērķu ziņā, taču kopumā veic vienu uzdevumu – palīdz cilvēkiem pārvaldīt ikdienas uzdevumus, veselību, apzinātību, finanses, dokumentus u.c. Pētījumā a…
Temperature effects explain continental scale distribution of cyanobacterial toxins
2018
Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect…

Masteroppgave psykisk helsearbeid ME504 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 Throughout our working carrier we have met youth who had dropped out from upper secondary school with that consequence that they stand without work or education. We wish to approach the phenomenon dropouts from the perspective of the youth, here boys, to try to find out more about how they think of their own possibilities. This study is part of a research project at the University of Agder and represents a contribution to the research group “Ung i Sør”. The purpose of this study is to increase understanding around how boys explain the causes behind their choice to dropout and what they express can contribute to returning t…
Utility of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio to identify long-term survivors among HCC patients treated with sorafenib
2020
Sorafenib is the first multikinase inhibitor demonstrating a survival benefit for patients suffering from advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, 1 issue remains open: what is the factor able to predict which patients will be long survivors? In the present study, we harnessed the potential of conditional survival, aiming at estimating the probability that a patient receiving sorafenib survives for more than 3 years. The present multicentric study was conducted on a cohort of 438 HCC patients. The primary end point was conditional overall survival. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to calculate conditional overall survival probabilities at 3 years. The 3-year conditional surviva…
Data from: Negative association between parental care and sibling cooperation in earwigs: a new perspective on the early evolution of family life?
2015
The evolution of family life requires net fitness benefits for offspring, which are commonly assumed to mainly derive from parental care. However, an additional source of benefits for offspring is often overlooked: cooperative interactions among juvenile siblings. In this study, we examined how sibling cooperation and parental care could jointly contribute to the early evolution of family life. Specifically, we tested whether the level of food transferred among siblings (sibling cooperation) in the European earwig Forficula auricularia (1) depends on the level of maternal food provisioning (parental care), and (2) is translated into offspring survival, as well as female investment into futu…
Data from: Simultaneous age-dependent and age-independent sexual selection in the lekking black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix)
2016
Individuals' reproductive success is often strongly associated with their age, with typical patterns of early-life reproductive improvement and late-life senescence. These age-related patterns are due to the inherent trade-offs between life-history traits competing for a limited amount of resources available to the organisms. In males, such trade-offs are exacerbated by the resource requirements associated with the expression of costly sexual traits, leading to dynamic changes in trait expression throughout their life span. Due to the age dependency of male phenotypes, the relationship between the expression of male traits and mating success can also vary with male age. Hence, using longitu…
The metabolism and availability of essential fatty acids in animal and human tissues.
1994
Essential fatty acids (EFA), which are not synthesized in animal and human tissues, belong to the n-6 and n-3 families of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), derived from linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (LNA, 18:3n-3). Optimal requirements are 3-6% of ingested energy for LA and 0.5-1% for LNA in adults. Requirements in LNA are higher in development. Dietary sources of LA and LNA are principally plants, while arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) is found in products from terrestrian animals, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are found in products from marine animals. EFA are principally present in dietary triacylglycerols, which should be hydrolyze…
