GW170817: Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Neutron Star Inspiral

On August 17, 2017 at 12-41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0×104 years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26 M, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60 M, with the total mass of the system 2.74-0.01+0.04M. Timing an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar: Measuring the Accretion Torque in IGR J00291+5934

We performed a timing analysis of the fastest accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934 using RXTE data taken during the outburst of December 2004. We corrected the arrival times of all the events for the orbital (Doppler) effects and performed a timing analysis of the resulting phase delays. In this way we have the possibility to study, for the first time in this class of sources, the spin-up of a millisecond pulsar as a consequence of accretion torques during the X-ray outburst. The accretion torque gives us for the first time an independent estimate of the mass accretion rate onto the neutron star, which can be compared with the observed X-ray luminosity. Nivelrikko on maailman yleisin nivelsairaus ja se heikentää etenkin yli 55-vuotiaiden toimintakykyä. Myös iän myötä heikkenevä tasapaino on yhteydessä toimintakykyyn. Nivelrikon yhteyttä tasapainoon on aikaisemmin tutkittu vähän ja havaitut tulokset ovat olleet ristiriitaisia. Lievän nivelrikon tutkiminen sekä siten sairauden varhainen toteaminen ja siihen puuttuminen voivat lykätä oireiden ja toimintakyvyn rajoitusten esiintymistä myöhemmäksi. This study was conducted in the context of a teacher professional development programme that aimed to improve dialogic teaching in the classroom, and it describes the programme and examines the change in teachers' dialogic teaching practices and pupils' classroom engagement during the programme. Data on pupils' school engagement were collected using classroom video recordings and students' self-ratings at the end of the lesson including dialogic teaching practices. The participants comprised seven in-service teachers and their 140 pupils (10- to 15-year-olds) from two comprehensive schools. In this paper, we explain the existence of a possible first-order phase transition that may occur over the external solid crust of a pulsar, by means of an interpretation of a particular formal model (drawn from Theoretical Astrophysics) whose thermodynamical phenomenology shows a possible first-order phase transition (according to Landau’s Phenomenological Theory).
Franču valodas apguvēju starpkultūru komunikācijas stratēģijas asinhronās saziņās tiešsaistē no pieklājības teorijas perspektīvas

Šī pētījuma mērķis ir analizēt pieklājības stratēģijas Latvijas un Kipras franču valodas apguvēju asinhronās saziņās tālsadarbības projekta ietvaros, kas tika veikts Latvijas Universitātes izglītības platformā Moodle. Šis pētījums ir balstīts uz Brauna un Levinsona (1987) pieklājības teorijas, kas nozimē, ka visi pieaugušie sabiedrības locekļi saziņas laikā ir apveltīti ar diviem universāliem aspektiem: "pozitīvo seju" un "negatīvo seju", kas katram indivīdam ir pastāvīga interese aizsargāt citu cilvēku klātbūtnē.
