Enduring Sacred Places: The Astronomical Orientation of the Iberian Cave-Sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel in Spain

2019

This paper presents the results of an archaeoastronomical study of the Iberian Iron Age cave-sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel, near the town of Mira in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain, together with a review of the latest archaeological and ethnographical data about the site. We found that the cave's 12 m-long access corridor is oriented precisely along the summer solstice sunset, so that the north wall of the main gallery is partially illuminated by sunlight at this time. Although the cave was in use from the Late Chalcolithic, it became an important religious centre in the Iberian period. After an apparent hiatus during the Roman and Islamic occupations, its …

Choice of the detectors for light impurities plasma studies at W7-X using ‘CO Monitor’ system

2019

Abstarct The ‘CO Monitor’ is a new spectrometer system dedicated for the continuous measurements of line intensities of carbon, oxygen, boron and nitrogen at the fusion plasma experiment Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X). Its main purpose is to deliver constant information about indicated elements with high time resolution (better than 1 ms), but low spatial resolution since the line shapes are not going to be investigated. The system consists of four independent channels, each equipped with dispersive element dedicated for measurement of selected line of interest. In order to perform the highest efficiency of the ‘CO Monitor’ system, it is essential to choose the proper detector type for this task. T…

NPP VIIRS land surface temperature product validation using worldwide observation networks.

2013

International audience; Thermal infrared satellite observations of the Earth's surface are key components in estimating the surface skin temperature over global land areas. This work presents validation methodologies to estimate the quantitative uncertainty in Land Surface Temperature (LST) product derived from the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) using ground-based measurements currently made operationally at many field and weather stations around the world. Over heterogeneous surfaces in terms of surface types or biophysical properties (e.g., vegetation density, emissivity), the validation protocol accounts for land s…

Morphometry of Middle Bronze Age palstaves. Part II - spatial distribution of shapes in two typological groups, implications for production and expor…

2013

10 pages; International audience; For archaeologists, metallic artifacts are key materials to assess Middle Bronze Age production areas and cultural exchanges. Here, a set of 629 bronze palstaves excavated in northern France, belonging to Breton and Norman typological groups, was treated by (open) outline-based morphometrics with orthogonal polynomial regression. Using robust statistics developed for outlier detection, these Norman and Breton palstave outlines can be divided into two groups: those for which the shape fluctuates close to the standard shape, called "congruent" axes, and those which are far enough from this standard to be considered as "non-congruent", although they possess mo…

Multilocus sequence typing analysis of Italian Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris strains suggests the evolution of local endemic populations of t…

2019

Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is the causal agent of black rot in Brassicaceae. It is widespread in Italy and severe outbreaks occur under conditions that favour disease development. In this study a multilocus sequence typing approach (MLST) based on the partial sequence of seven loci was applied to a selection of strains representative of the main areas of cultivation and hosts. The aim was to investigate whether the long tradition of brassica crops in Italy has influenced the evolution of different Xcc populations. All loci were polymorphic; 14 allelic profiles were identified of which 13 were unique to Italian strains. Based on the seven loci, the most common genotype withi…

Thioredoxin (Trxo1) interacts with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and its overexpression affects the growth of tobacco cell culture.

2017

Thioredoxins (Trxs), key components of cellular redox regulation, act by controlling the redox status of many target proteins, and have been shown to play an essential role in cell survival and growth. The presence of a Trx system in the nucleus has received little attention in plants, and the nuclear targets of plant Trxs have not been conclusively identified. Thus, very little is known about the function of Trxs in this cellular compartment. Previously, we studied the intracellular localization of PsTrxo1 and confirmed its presence in mitochondria and, interestingly, in the nucleus under standard growth conditions. In investigating the nuclear function of PsTrxo1 we identified proliferati…

The combined action of 9 lipoxygenase and galactolipase is sufficient to bring about programmed cell death during tobacco hypersensitive response

2005

International audience; Oxylipins, derived from fatty acid hydroperoxides (FAHs), are thought to play different roles during plant pathogen interactions. During hypersensitive response (HR) some of them serve as signals necessary for defence gene activation whereas others could contribute to pathogen killing or could participate in the execution of plant programmed cell death (PCD) associated with this resistance. In order to address the role of these compounds in the latter process, we have closely observed lipid peroxidation, the first step of this metabolic pathway, under different situations which led either to accelerated or inhibited HR cell death. The oxidative process has been studi…

Phosphorylated intermediate of a transport ATPase and activity of protein kinase in membranes from corn roots

1983

A maize-root microsomal fraction was enriched in ATPase by treatment with Triton X-100. This activity, which reached 1.2-2.0/mumol Pi x min-1 x mg protein-1, was specific for ATP, very slightly stimulated by K+, inhibited by orthovanadate and diethylstilbestrol, resistant to oligomycin and azide, and had a Km of 1.2 mM MgATP. Incubation of the microsomal fraction with [gamma 32-P]ATP followed by electrophoresis in acid conditions revealed the presence of several phosphoproteins. The phosphorylation of a 110000-Mr polypeptide reached the steady-state level in less than 5 s and rapidly turned over the phosphate group. The phosphorylation level was an hyperbolic function of the [ATP] with a Km…

Variation in leaf anatomical traits relates to the evolution of C4 photosynthesis in Tribuloideae (Zygophyllaceae)

2019

Abstract Tribuloideae (Zygophyllaceae, Zygophyllales) is a warm-climate clade of mostly creeping herbs with an uncertain number of C4 species from at least two genera, raising the possibility of multiple C4 origins within this lineage. To delineate C3 and C4 distributions within Tribuloideae, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis using four genetic markers from 78 accessions of Tribuloideae. δ13C values from 68 Tribuloideae members detected 42 C4 species in the genera Kallstroemia, Tribulopis and Tribulus, and no C4 in Balanites, Neoluederitzia, and Sisyndite. All Kallstroemia are C4, while Tribulopis and Tribulus include C3 species. Two independent C4 origins are supported, one in Tribulus …

Using Two-Level Context-Based Predictors for Assembly Assistance in Smart Factories

2020

The paper presents some preliminary results in engineering a context-aware assistive system for manual assembly tasks. It employs context-based predictors to suggest the next steps during the manufacturing process and is based on data collected from experiments with trainees in assembling a tablet. We were interested in finding correlations between the characteristics of the workers and the way they prefer to assemble the tablet. A certain predictor is then trained with correct assembly styles extracted from the collected data and assessed against the whole dataset. Thus, we found the predictor that best matches the assembly preferences.
