Impact of tillage system on arbuscular mycorrhiza fungal communities in the soil under Mediterranean conditions.
2012
A more diverse arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungal community should be more versatile and resilient to variation in environmental conditions over space and time. To evaluate the effect of no-till and conventional tillage systems, AM fungal diversity was assessed as part of a long term field experiment by sequencing of DNA, extracted from soil, that encoded the large ribosomal sub-unit and was obtained by nested-PCR. In comparison with no-till, conventional tillage decreased AM fungal diversity by 40%. Differences between treatments in the frequency of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) present in soil, confirm that AM fungi are differently vulnerable to soil disturbance.
Characterization of cryopreserved rat liver parenchymal cells by metabolism of diagnostic substrates and activities of related enzymes
1992
The metabolism of testosterone and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) which is mediated by diverse enzymes was determined in cryopreserved rat liver parenchymal cells and compared with that found in freshly isolated cells. In addition, the activities of single xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes were measured by using specific substrates. The cytochrome P450 (P450)-mediated total metabolic conversion of testosterone was reduced to 55% in cryopreserved cells. The metabolite profile, i.e. the formation of single metabolites compared with total metabolic conversion, was however unchanged when compared with freshly isolated cells. A concomitant reduction in the activities of the involved P450 isoenzymes can ther…

Polymerization of an activated ester monomer based on 4-vinylsulfonic acid and its polymer analogous reaction
2011
Homopolymers containing sulfonic ester side groups were synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization utilizing benzyl dithiobenzoate, cumyl dithiobenzoate, and 4-cyano-4-((thiobenzoyl)sulfanyl)pentanoic acid as chain transfer agents. Likewise diblock copolymers containing poly(styrene), poly(octylstyrene) and poly(pentafluorostyrene) as the second block were synthesized. Additionally, nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) was investigated for the synthesis of a homopolymer as well as for a diblock copolymer. Furthermore, the post-polymerization functionalization with various amines to yield the respective sulfonamides was conducted. The conversion …
A crucial role of adamantanoid Cu(II) complexes in the redox systems: CuCl–diallylsulfoxide–O2 and CuCl2–diallylsulfide–O2
2014
Abstract The hypothetically reversible [Cu(I)(diallylsulfoxide)] ↔ O 2 [Cu(II)(diallylsulfide)] system was examined by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It is stated that the Cu4OCl6 body centered adamantanoid cages, appearing at both the substrate and product sites, act as a template to promote the oxidation of diallylsulfide to diallylsulfoxide or Cu(I) to Cu(II), thus making the reaction irreversible. Each of these two adamantanoid cores possesses a different point symmetry as well as self assembly mode to form two polymorphs of the [Cu4OCl6(diallylsulfoxide)4] complex. Their polymorphic relationships based on the symmetry homology S4 ← Td → C3, as well as the distortion in the Cu…
Association of SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism with male breast cancer risk: results from a multicenter study in Italy
2014
Male breast cancer (MBC) is rare and poorly understood. Like female breast cancer (FBC), MBCs are highly sensitive to hormonal changes, and hyperestrogenism, specifically, represents a major risk factor for MBC. MBC is considered similar to late-onset, post-menopausal estrogen/progesteron receptors positive FBC (ER+/PR+). Sulfotransferase 1A1 (SULT1A1) is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of estrogens. Recently, SULT1A1 common functional polymorphism Arg213His (638G>A) variant has been found to be associated with increased breast cancer (BC) risk, particularly in post-menopausal women. For this reason, we decided to explore whether SULT1A1 Arg213His could exert an effect on MBC developme…
