Sonography and computed tomography in the diagnosis of orbitocranial malformations and tumors

Standardized sonography and CT scanning have distinct advantages and disadvantages in the evaluation of patients with orbital diseases. Echography provides an efficient screening examination in patients presenting with signs and symptoms of orbital pathology. It allows the detection, localization, measurement and in almost 80% differentiation of orbital lesions. High resolution CT scanning gives an excellent topographic display of masses in the orbit. In visualization of intracranial causes of orbital processes and demonstration of changes in the posterior third of the orbit, in the orbital bones and the periorbital sinuses it is superior to ultrasonography.
The electrofunctional investigations in the diagnosis of orbital diseases

The importance of electrofunctional examinations (electroretinography, electro-oculography and visual evoked potentials) in orbital diseases is emphasized. Although such tests cannot give the same support to the clinical diagnosis as ultrasonography or CT scanning, they do give information about the functional state of the various orbital components. Visual evoked potentials can monitor the functionality of the optic nerve during and after trauma or compressive orbital diseases; electroretinography shows retinal changes secondary to traumatic or vascular orbital diseases, while electro-oculography allows to record extraocular muscle dysfunction.

Ultrasound is commonly performed to diagnose pathological processes of the neck and the salivary glands. In contrast, pathological changes of the sinuses and the bony structures of the face are only rarely examined sonographically. This paper deals with the diagnostic scope of ultrasound in the case of orbital and nasal fractures as well as for cases of sinus pathology excluding acute sinusitis. 51 patients with different diseases of this area were examined using US and X-ray or CT scan. Double nail of the second toe: A case report with sonographic and radiological correlation

Double toenail is a rare abnormality that usually affects the fifth toe. It is considered as an inherited condition that may represent an incomplete form of polydactyly. Underlying bone abnormalities should be ruled out. We present a case of a double toenail of the second toe, a location that has not previously been described, with underlying bone involvement noted on ultrasound and plain films.

Purpose The aim of this study is to assess the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the detection of liver metastases in cancer patients with geographic liver fatty deposition on greyscale ultrasonography (US). This case report demonstrates the utility and safety of ultrasound transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block in a paediatric patient suffering from Menkes disease. Anaesthetists, and particularly paediatric and neonatal anaesthetists, have to make a careful assessment of these patients, who are subjected to frequent surgeries, despite their tender years.
