Pressure-induced instability of the fergusonite phase of EuNbO4 studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence spect…

2020

In this article, we present high-pressure experimental investigations on EuNbO4, an interesting technologically important material, using synchrotron based x-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and europium photoluminescence measurements up to 39.2, 31.6, and 32.4 GPa, respectively. All three techniques show the stability of the ambient monoclinic phase until 20 GPa. Beyond that, a pressure-induced structural phase transition takes place with the coexistence of two phases over a wide pressure range. The structure of the high-pressure phase has been determined as orthorhombic (space group: Imma) with a volume discontinuity of nearly 9% at the transition indicating the nature of trans…

Elastic properties of the sigma W-Re phase: A first principles investigation

2017

Abstract We perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations to obtain the formation enthalpy and six independent elastic constants for the 32 possible occupations of the five non-equivalent sites of the σ -phase. The obtained results suggest linear correlation between bulk modulus and Re concentration and between shear modulus and formation enthalpy. The results are used to parameterize a sublattice model with ideal mixing on each sublattice for the free energy and elastic constants. The model allows one to predict the equilibrium composition on each sublattice and hence elastic constants as a function of global Re concentration and temperature of the W-Re alloy.

Towards the Improvement of Citizen Communication Through Computational Intelligence

2016

When dealing with problems that arise from collective sharing of resources in metropolitan areas (i.e., energy, pollution, traffic, health) most of the interaction between citizens and local governance is usually carried out through the use of natural languages. Digital technologies allows smart cities residents to communicate with a broad range of experts (e.g. bureaucrats, legislators, urbanists, etc.) that routinely use technical terminology seldom accessible to the layperson, or linguistic styles that are not immediately understandable. Although information technology should encourage citizen participation in governance at many levels, the different levels of knowledge possessed by the …

Anomalies of dielectric properties and conductivity in single domain LiNbO3:Zn crystals

2016

ABSTRACTA study of the temperature dependence of dielectric constant, conductivity, and piezoelectric modulus in the single-domain state of LiNbO3 crystals modified by Zn admixture at threshold concentration is reported. Unipolarity of the LiNbO3:Zn crystals is observed to increase after treatment of brand-new samples by high-temperature electro-diffusion annealing and by subsequent high-temperature annealing of short-circuited samples. The observed effects are explained as a result of meta-stable residual domains collapsing at high temperature the collapse being assisted by disintegration of charged clusters stabilizing domain walls. The rise of unipolarity is accompanied by anomalies on t…

The effects of the additive of Eu ions on elastic and electric properties of BaTiO3ceramics

2016

ABSTRACTThe BaTiO3 and BaTiO3+X%wt.Eu2O3 (X = 1, 2, 3) ceramics were prepared by a solid phase reaction. The structural and morphology studies were carried out by means of an X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Elastic moduli were determined with the use of an ultrasonic method. The dielectric permittivity (ϵ′) and tanδ as a function of composition and temperature were investigated. The increasing concentration of Eu ions leads to a slight shift of the Curie temperature and changes the characteristics of ϵ′ and tanδ. The structural, mechanical and dielectric properties of the BTEX ceramics were discussed in terms of microstructure and dopants contents.

Photoelectron Emission from Metal Surfaces Induced by VUV-emission of Filament Driven Hydrogen Arc Discharge Plasma

2015

Photoelectron emission measurements have been performed using a filament-driven multi-cusp arc discharge volume production H^- ion source (LIISA). It has been found that photoelectron currents obtained with Al, Cu, Mo, Ta and stainless steel (SAE 304) are on the same order of magnitude. The photoelectron currents depend linearly on the discharge power. It is shown experimentally that photoelectron emission is significant only in the short wavelength range of hydrogen spectrum due to the energy dependence of the quantum efficiency. It is estimated from the measured data that the maximum photoelectron flux from plasma chamber walls is on the order of 1 A per kW of discharge power.

Electrical and thermomechanical properties of CVI- Si3N4 porous rice husk ash infiltrated by Al-Mg-Si alloys

2017

Abstract The effect of following processing parameters on the electrical and thermomechanical properties of Al/Si3N4 deposited silica composites was investigated using the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA): infiltration temperature and time, atmosphere, effect of Si3N4 coating, porosity content in the preforms, and magnesium content in the alloy. The contributions of each of the parameters to modulus of elasticity, electrical resistivity, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and thermal diffusivity of the resulting composites were determined. The maximum modulus of elasticity and electrical resistivity of obtained composites were 265 GPa, and 1.37 × 10−3 Ω m, respectively. …

Investigation of mechanical and electrical properties of Li doped sodium niobate ceramic system

2016

ABSTRACTThe Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 ceramic solid solution was prepared by means of a two-stage hot-pressing technology. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed the formation of a single perovskite phase with an orthorhombic symmetry in the investigated composition. The microstructure and EDS measurements were performed. They confirmed the high purity and the expected qualitative composition. A good homogeneity of the microstructures and a small degree of porosity were observed. The elastic modulus (the Young's modulus E, shear modulus G, and Poisson's ratio ν) of Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 were determined with the use of an ultrasonic method. The electrical properties of Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 ceramics were invest…

Mechanical characterisation of pentagonal gold nanowires in three different test configurations: A comparative study.

2019

Abstract Mechanical characterisation of individual nanostructures is a challenging task and can greatly benefit from the utilisation of several alternative approaches to increase the reliability of results. In the present work, we have measured and compared the elastic modulus of five-fold twinned gold nanowires (NWs) with atomic force microscopy (AFM) indentation in three different test configurations: three-point bending with fixed ends, three-point bending with free ends and cantilevered-beam bending. The free-ends condition was realized by introducing a novel approach where the NW is placed diagonally inside an inverted pyramid chemically etched in a silicon wafer. In addition, all thre…

Ab initio calculations of structural, electronic and vibrational properties of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite crystals with oxygen vacancies

2020

The first-principles (ab initio) computations of the structural, electronic, and phonon properties have been performed for cubic and low-temperature tetragonal phases of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite crystals, both stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric (with neutral oxygen vacancies). Calculations were performed with the CRYSTAL17 computer code within the linear combination of atomic orbitals approximation, using the B1WC advanced hybrid exchange-correlation functional of the density-functional-theory (DFT) and the periodic supercell approach. Various possible spin states of the defective systems were considered by means of unrestricted (open shell) DFT calculations. It was demonstrated that…
