A music educational daily program to develop cognitive abilities among pre-school children: a way to prevent academic failure?

2011

The idea that "music makes you smarter" and promotes verbal skills (Ho et al., 2003; Forgeard and al. 2000), spatiotemporal capacities (Rauscher and Zupan 2000) or even the QI (Schellenberg 2006) has received attention from general public and researchers. In this study we examined the effects of music training on pre-school and school performance of kindergarten children, in particular the early writing skills. One main question is investigated: what are the benefits of a specific music program for the cognitive abilities development on preschooler children (age 5)? Is it a way to prevent academic failure? We test this hypothesis with a large sample of 487 French preschoolers split up into …

Does a musical program improve the development of cognitive abilities on kindergarten students: a French experience?

2011

The idea that "music makes you smarter" and promotes both cognitive skills as verbal skills (Ho et al., 2003; Forgeard and al. 2000), spatiotemporal capacities (Rauscher and Zupan 2000), school performances (Wetter et al. 2009) or even boost the IQ (Schellenberg, 2004, 2006) has received attention from researchers and general public. In this study we examined the effects of music practice on pre-school and school performance of kindergarten children, in particular concerning early writing skills. Here, one main question is investigated: what are the benefits of a specific music program in the curriculum for the cognitive abilities development on preschooler children (age 5)?

A method for quantifying atrial fibrillation organization based on wave-morphology similarity

2002

A new method for quantifying the organization of single bipolar electrograms recorded in the human atria during atrial fibrillation (AF) is presented. The algorithm relies on the comparison between pairs of local activation waves (LAWs) to estimate their morphological similarity, and returns a regularity index (/spl rho/) which measures the extent of repetitiveness over time of the detected activations. The database consisted of endocardial data from a multipolar basket catheter during AF and intraatrial recordings during atrial flutter. The index showed maximum regularity (/spl rho/=1) for all atrial flutter episodes and decreased significantly when increasing AF complexity as defined by W…

Salient Spin Images: A Descriptor for 3D Object Recognition

2018

In the last decades a wide range of algorithms have been devoted to recognize 3D free-from objects under real conditions such as occlusions, clutters, rotation, scale and translation. Spin image is one of these algorithms known to be robust to rotation, translation, occlusions up to 70% and clutters up to 60%, but still suffer from scaling, resolution changes and it is time consuming. In this paper we present a novel approach based on spin images, called salient spin images (SSI). This method enhances spin images algorithm based on its limits. Particularly, it decreases significantly the complexity of the algorithm using DoG detector, it shows a higher performance due to the relevant locali…

Spatio‐temporal classification in point patterns under the presence of clutter

2019

We consider the problem of detection of features in the presence of clutter for spatio-temporal point patterns. In previous studies, related to the spatial context, Kth nearest-neighbor distances to classify points between clutter and features. In particular, a mixture of distributions whose parameters were estimated using an expectation-maximization algorithm. This paper extends this methodology to the spatio-temporal context by considering the properties of the spatio-temporal Kth nearest-neighbor distances. For this purpose, we make use of a couple of spatio-temporal distances, which are based on the Euclidean and the maximum norms. We show close forms for the probability distributions o…

The supraventricular tachycardias: Proposal of a diagnostic algorithm for the narrow complex tachycardias

2013

AbstractThe narrow complex tachycardias (NCTs) are defined by the presence in a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) of a QRS complex duration less than 120ms and a heart rate greater than 100 beats per minute; those are typically of supraventricular origin, although rarely narrow complex ventricular tachycardias have been reported in the literature. As some studies document, to diagnose correctly the NCTs is an arduous exercise because sometimes those have similar presentation on the ECG. In this paper, we have reviewed the physiopathological, clinical, and ECG findings of all known supraventricular tachycardias and, in order to reduce the possible diagnostic errors on the ECG, we have proposed …

A Teaching Experience: Aeroelasticity and the Finite Element Method

2015

[EN] The aeroelastic modelling of aircraft structures is a fundamental area for the students of Aerospace Engineering Degree. This subject has a strongly multidisciplinary character and involves other several subjects like mechanics, vibrations, aerodynamics, structural analysis. Consequently, the students find stimulating the challenge of merging their knowledge at different areas. In this paper, a teaching experience on the solution of the aeroelastic problem of a 3D-wing through six different computer tasks is presented. The main objective is to attempt a relatively complex problem using a simple version of the Finite Element Method with only four degrees of freedom. The students begin c…

WING FLUTTER SUPPRESSION ENHANCEMENT USING A WELL-SUITED ACTIVE CONTROL MODEL

2007

State-space theory is employed here to model a new active wing flutter suppression control. In this paper, the design of a flutter suppression control law, for the NASA Benchmark Active Control Technology wing, is proposed through a single input-single output controller and unsteady aerodynamics is modelled using the Theodorsen's theory. Wing dynamic model is obtained by combining the aeroelastic equations of motion with the actuator model presented. Open-loop dynamic behaviour is examined for a single feedback variable that combines pitch and plunge accelerations. Here, a new formulation of control law, based on classical control techniques and featuring two feedback closed-loops, is succ…
