A record of the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary climatic variation on the southern margin of the Tethys : clay minerals and palynofacies of the early Cr…
2005
Abstract In order to precise the paleogeographic extension of the climatic variation known at the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, the sedimentary organic matter (palynofacies and Rock-Eval) and the clay minerals content of Berriasian sediments of the Sidi Kralif Formation are studied on the Jebel Meloussi section, central Tunisia. Standard sedimentological and palynofacies analysis allow to reconstruct the bathymetric curve and the sequence stratigraphic scheme. Using existing biostratigraphy based on calpionellids and ammonite zonation, the sequence stratigraphic interpretation can be correlated with the established eustatic chart. Clay mineral assemblages are characterized by a shift in the…
Integrated stratigraphy of the potential candidate Oxfordian GSSP at Thuoux and Saint-Pierre d'Argençon (France).
2013
5 pages; International audience; The Thuoux and Saint-Pierre d'Argençon sections (Subalpine Basin, southeastern France) are proposed as a potential GSSP candidate for the Callovian-Oxfordian boundary. Several aspects of stratigraphy that have recently been applied in the two selected sections are discussed, including ammonite and nannofossil biostratigraphy, palynology, physical stratigraphy, and cyclostratigraphy.
Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy
2013
Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP; also known as familiar amyloidosis and hereditary amyloidosis) is an autosomal dominant inherited disease due to mutations of the transthyretin (TTR) gene coding for the corresponding protein, consisting of 127 amino acids. The gene is located on chromosome 18q. More than 100 different mutations are known. Other mutant precursor proteins produced in the liver, such as apolipoprotein I and II, lysozyme and fibrinogen Aα, may be of etiological importance as well. Amyloidogenic mutations of the TTR gene lead to decreased stability of the corresponding protein and subsequently to extracellular deposition of amyloid in several tissues (peripheral and autonom…

Arbitrarily shaped plates analysis via Line Element-Less Method (LEM)
2018
Abstract An innovative procedure is introduced for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped thin plates with various boundary conditions and under generic transverse loading conditions. Framed into Line Element-less Method, a truly meshfree method, this novel approach yields the solution in terms of the deflection function in a straightforward manner, without resorting to any discretization, neither in the domain nor on the boundary. Specifically, expressing the deflection function through a series expansion in terms of harmonic polynomials, it is shown that the proposed method requires only the evaluation of line integrals along the boundary parametric equation. Further, minimization of appropri…
Precise chronology of Polynesian temple construction and use for southeastern Maui, Hawaiian Islands determined by 230Th dating of corals
2015
International audience; Emergent archaic states in pre-contact Hawai'i used a ritual control hierarchy implemented through a system of temples to manage production, extract tribute, and reinforce the legitimacy of the ruling elites. Based on a limited sample of precise 230Th dates from coral offerings on Maui Island temples it had been hypothesized that this temple system rapidly expanded during the period from A.D. 1580–1640. We tested this hypothesis by obtaining an expanded sample of 39 new 230Th coral dates from temples in Kahikinui District, and one sample from the summit of a cinder cone that likely had ritual significance. Combined with seven coral dates previously obtained, this yie…
New Objective Refraction Metric Based on Sphere Fitting to the Wavefront
2017
Purpose. To develop an objective refraction formula based on the ocular wavefront error (WFE) expressed in terms of Zernike coefficients and pupil radius, which would be an accurate predictor of subjective spherical equivalent (SE) for different pupil sizes.Methods. A sphere is fitted to the ocular wavefront at the center and at a variable distance,t. The optimal fitting distance, topt, is obtained empirically from a dataset of 308 eyes as a function of objective refraction pupil radius,r0, and used to define the formula of a new wavefront refraction metric (MTR). The metric is tested in another, independent dataset of 200 eyes.Results. For pupil radiir0≤2 mm, the new metric predicts the equ…
Semi-Supervised Support Vector Biophysical Parameter Estimation
2008
Two kernel-based methods for semi-supervised regression are presented. The methods rely on building a graph or hypergraph Laplacian with both the labeled and unlabeled data, which is further used to deform the training kernel matrix. The deformed kernel is then used for support vector regression (SVR). The semi-supervised SVR methods are sucessfully tested in LAI estimation and ocean chlorophyll concentration prediction from remotely sensed images.
The size of aryl linker between two polyaza-cyclophane moieties controls the binding selectivity to ds-RNA vs ds-DNA
2013
Aryl-linked (pyridine- vs. phenanthroline-) bis-polyaza pyridinophane scorpiands PYPOD and PHENPOD strongly bind to the double stranded DNA and RNA, whereby very intriguing RNA over DNA selectivity is finely tuned by aryl-linker length and aromatic surface. Moreover, PYPOD and PHENPOD dimer formation at high compound/polynucleotide ratios is highly sensitive to the fine interplay between the steric and binding properties of compound-dimers and the DNA minor groove/RNA major groove. That is demonstrated by significantly different induced CD spectra, which allow spectroscopic differentiation between various DNA/RNA secondary structures. A significantly higher (micromolar) antiproliferative ef…
