Comparison of two different labial salivary gland biopsy incision techniques: A randomized clinical trial

2013

Objectives: To compare the reliability of two different labial salivary gland biopsy (LSGB) incision techniques (vertical versus horizontal incision techniques) and to report the related complications and discomfort. Study Design: 163 patients who underwent LSGB were included in this study. Patients were randomly divided as vertical incision group (n=81) and horizontal incision group (n=82). Demographic and clinical information of each patient were recorded. A questionnaire was prepared and applied together with Visual Analog Scale (VAS) on the subjects verbally at the 7th day, postoperatively. Intraoperative, short- term and delayed complications were evaluated. Results: The mean age of pa…

Severe herpes simplex virus type-I infections after dental procedures

2010

Background: Recurrences of herpes labialis (RHL) may be triggered by systemic factors, including stress, menses, and fever. Local stimuli, such as lip injury or sunlight exposure are also associated to RHL. Dental extraction has also been reported as triggering event. Case reports: Seven otherwise healthy patients are presented with severe and extensive RHL occurring about 2-3 days after dental extraction under local anaesthesia. Immunohistochemistry on smears and immunofluorescence on cell culture identified herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-I). Five patients reported more severe prodromal signs than usual. Although all the patients suffered from RHL, none had previously experienced RHL aft…

Cutting type and IBA treatment duration affect Teucrium fruticans adventitious root quality

2014

Root development of stem cuttings of Silver Germander (Teucrium fruticans) was investigated in relation to cutting type and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) treatment. Terminal cuttings of a clone grown in Sicily were trimmed to three types: terminal cuttings with apex (TWA), terminal cuttings without apex (TWOA) or sub-terminal cuttings (ST). To verify the cutting response to exogenous auxin, cuttings were dipped to a 2.0 cm depth in a 0.5% indole-3-butyric acid solution for 0, 5 or 7 minutes. Overall percent survival was 97 to 98%. Rooting percent, root number and root length were affected by cutting type and indole-3-butyric acid treatment. In general, TWA cuttings demonstrated a higher capac…

Caliber-persistent Artery: A Case Report

2019

ABSTRACT The caliber-persistent labial artery (CPLA) is a vascular anomaly in which a main branch of the artery penetrates the submucosal area of the lip without loss of caliber. It commonly presents as an elevated soft tissue mass and is often pulsatile on manual palpation. Clinical suspicion is important, given the risk of bleeding, either from slight trauma or accidentally if lack of awareness leads to excision of the lesion owing to an incorrect diagnosis. CPLA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any lesion affecting the lip, especially to differentiate from mucocele or squamous cell carcinoma. This particular case of CPLA in the upper lip of a girl presents a both unu…

Intimate male partner violence impairs immune control over herpes simplex virus type 1 in physically and psychologically abused women.

2004

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a worldwide problem and a cause of significant distress and threat to health. Studies have focused mainly on mental health, and few have considered the effect on physiological systems. The aim of this research was to determine whether IPV also compromises the immune system, as evidenced by a decrease in immune regulation over herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), the latent virus that causes cold sores. METHODS: Physically abused (N = 47) and psychologically abused women (N = 27) were compared with nonabused control women (N = 37). Information about sociodemographic characteristics, lifetime history of victimization, and mental heal…

Lichen sclerosus Mistaken for Sexual Abuse – Prevention of Victimization

2014

This case report describes the forensic examination of 7 girls aged between 4-11 years with suspected sexual abuse. The children had been reported by local pediatricians, hospital physicians or authorities such as the youth welfare office and police due to mucosal changes in the anogenital area. All children presented with a clearly delimited, porcelain-like white discoloration of the skin in the anal and genital area with atrophic conversion to parchment-like skin. The markedly vulnerable skin exhibited very different manifestations of hemorrhagic dermal and mucosal defects in the area of the labia, the clitoris, the perineum and the perianal region. The hymen was intact in all cases. The …

Fetal Urogenital Sinus with Consecutive Hydrometrocolpos because of Labial Fusion: Prenatal Diagnostic Difficulties and Postpartal Therapeutic Manage…

2006

Objective: To elucidate the differential diagnoses of tumorous dilations in the fetal pelvic region detected by prenatal ultrasound and the postnatal management demonstrated on a fetus with 29 weeks of gestation with a retrovesical located bottle-like cystic structure measuring 54 × 31 × 27 mm within the pelvis. Postnatal findings were a labial fusion and a consecutive hydrometrocolpos due to a urethrovaginal fistula. Method: Case report of a fetus affected by an intricate cloacal anomaly. Results: The long-term prognosis for this nonsyndromic form of hydrometrocolpos without any other structural defects or organic failures after oper…

SURGICAL CORRECTION OF LABIA MINORA HYPERTROPHY, A PERSONAL TECHNIQUE

2018

Background. Labia minora hypertrophy is a congenital or acquired condition in which both labia minora (or more rarely only one) protrude beyond the edge of the labia majora. The authors present a surgical technique of volumetric reduction of hypertrophic labia minora, associated with lipofilling of the labia majora. Methods. Between 2005 and 2014, 27 patients underwent surgical reduction of labia minora, as described by Altier and Rouzier. The indications for surgical treatment varied and were as follows: interference with sexual intercourse; poor hygiene; difficulty wearing tight-fitting pants; difficulty while performing sporting activities such as cycling; aesthetic complaints. The surgi…

Hyaluronic acid-based two-stage medical therapy to unfold the aged face: The centrifugal approach

2020

Background: Facial aging is a multifactorial process characterized by structural changes to the dermis and ligaments, lipoatrophy in the fat pads and hypodermis, remodeling of the bony skeleton, change in muscle tonicity and tissue descent. Aims: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a hyaluronic acid-based treatment for the aging face that addresses all its causes in a caudal to cranial and medial to lateral direction: the centrifugal technique. Methods: Between March 2015 and January 2018, 187 patients were treated with a high G’ hyaluronic acid in two sessions, one/two weeks apart, to improve signs of facial aging, starting from the lower centrofacial area and progress…

Diagnostic evaluation of serial sections of labial salivary gland biopsies in Sjögren's syndrome.

2007

OBJECTIVES: Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic inflammatory disease. The detection of chronic inflammatory infiltrates containing >50 lymphocytes (lymphocytic focus) per 4 mm2 tissue in minor salivary gland biopsies is a diagnostic parameter of the disease. The aim of the study was to examine if an increase in the tissue area of a single minor labial salivary gland biopsy through serial histological sections in patients affected by primary Sjögren's syndrome could facilitate the detection of the diagnostic focus score (grades >1 or >2). METHODS: We observed 24 labial salivary gland biopsies from patients affected by primary Sjögren's syndrome, diagnosed according to the clinical-laboratory cri…
