Comparative study of upper lip frenectomy with the CO2 laser versus the Er, Cr:YSGG laser
2012
Objectives: To compare upper lip frenulum reinsertion, bleeding, surgical time and surgical wound healing in frenectomies performed with the CO2 laser versus the Er, Cr:YSGG laser. Study design: A prospective study was carried out on 50 randomized pediatric patients who underwent rhomboidal resection of the upper lip frenulum with either the CO2 laser or the Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Twenty-five patients were assigned to each laser system. All patients were examined at 7, 14, 21 days and 4 months after the operation in order to assess the surgical wound healing. Results: Insertion of the frenulum, which was preoperatively located between the upper central incisors, migrated to the mucogingival junc…
Biodiversità in alcune specie del genere Mentha nel territorio dei Monti Nebrodi (Sicilia N-W).
2008
In Nebrodi Mountains (N-E Sicily), the genus Mentha is represented by an high number of species, in many cases typical of humid and subhumid environments. This work was addressed to investigate about the biomorphological traits of various accessions belonging to 3 Mentha species collected in the Nebrodi highlands, namely 22 accessions of Mentha spicata, 12 of Mentha suaveolens and 13 of Mentha aquatica. Plant material was picked up starting from the early spring 2007, from different sites as in altitude and in pedological and climatic traits, that were distributed over an area of 200.000 ha approx.. Later on, all collected plant individuals were transplanted in a collection field, appositel…
The antimicrobial actitity of water extracts from Labiatae.
2006
In vitro antimicrobial activity of water extracts of oregano, rosemary and sage were tested against five different fungi (Phytophthora cactorum, Verticillium dahliae, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici, Phoma tracheiphila and Botrytis cinerea). Infusion, decoction and maceration methods were used to obtain the extracts. Their inhibent effect on radial fungal growth was determined at three different concentrations (500 mL/L, 50 mL/L and 5 mL/L). After 4, 8 and 12 days the radial growth of the species was measured and fungitoxicity was recorded in terms of percent colony inhibition. The data obtained showed that while the extracts of rosemary and sage were less effective against all fungi t…
Cheek Volumization and the Nasolabial Fold.
2018
Sir: We have read the article by Mowlds and Lambros1 with great interest and enthusiasm. The findings of their study show that the nasolabial fold does not improve after cheek injection. By analyzing three-dimensional images of the face before and immediately after cheek injection of high- G′ hyaluronic acid, they demonstrate that the perceived nasolabial fold improvement, reported after cheek injections,2,3 is attributable to overall improvement in facial appearance rather than to actual nasolabial fold improvement. As a consequence, it might be ruled out that the nasolabial fold is a consequence of cheek deflating and it is likely attributable predominantly to change in the corner of the …
The incidence of severe oral mucositis and its occurrence sites in pediatric oncologic patients
2020
Background Childhood cancer is one of the main causes of child mortality and its treatment has debilitating effects on the oral cavity. Several oral mucositis (SOM) is one of the most common and may cause undesirable symptoms such as pain and risk of systemic infection. Material and Methods This was a longitudinal, retrospective, and observational study determining the incidence of severe oral mucositis (SOM) and its occurrence sites in pediatric oncologic patients, in João Pessoa, Brazil, between 2013 and 2018. Data from 56 patients aged 1 to 18 years were collected from their medical records and through an oral mucosa examination, from the 1st to 5th week of chemotherapy treatment (CT) us…
Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience.
2006
Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience. Carretto E, Dall'Igna P, Alaggio R, Siracusa F, Granata C, Ferrari A, Cecchetto G. Source Division of Paediatric Surgery, Department of Paediatrics, University of Padua, Padua, Italy. Abstract BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma (FH) of infancy is a benign mesenchymal tumor, occurring as a superficial mass. Complete excision is curative. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical features and treatment results of 18 children with FH are described. RESULTS: Local excision was the most common procedure. Surgery was radical in 10 patients, with microscopic residual disease in 6; all of them are alive with no evidence of disease 2 to 4…

Facial analysis using a new clinical device: The Kattan Facio-meter.
2018
Background The aim of the study was to attempt to set average faciometric standards for Egyptians using the Kattan Facio-meter. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 180 faculty students with age range 17-25 years. It was divided into three groups; Angle Class I, II and III. Class II was further subdivided into divisions 1 and 2. Linear and angular facial measurements in relation to K plane were taken using the Kattan facio-meter. The measurements were correlated to Angle's classification and between genders. Results On comparing the different classes, Class II division 1 showed the statistically highest mean value for Orbitale-soft tissue A; p=0.042, Class II divisions 1 and 2 for O…
Cephalic anatomy of Sinentomon erythranum Yin (Protura : Sinentomidae)
1992
Abstract The structure of the head capsule, endoskeletal structures, oral folds, mouthparts, foregut, maxillary and labial glands, and the central nervous system of the Chinese proturan Sinentomon erythranum Yin (Protura : Sinentomidae) have been described. The most significant features are the unusual thickness of the cuticle with numerous serrated lines, the reduction of sutures and the absence of linea ventralis, the simplification of gnathal pieces, and the reduction of the musculature. A comparison with other Protura and Apterygota leads to some morphological and phylogenetical interpretations of the cephalic structures, in particular those concerning the entotrophy.
Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis
2011
doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00608.x Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis Objectives: The reduction in the level of oestrogen, typical in menopause, has some effect on the health of the oral cavity. In fact, post-menopausal women present more severe periodontal disease than pre-menopausal women. Numerous factors can be held to be responsible for this increase, among which are the effects of oestrogens on the oral epithelium, on the salivary glands, on bone tissue and on the endothelium. Our double blind study aims to evaluate the possible variations in oral microcirculation in post-menopausal women. Methods: Twenty-seven women in post-menopau…
