Accelerating collision detection for large-scale crowd simulation on multi-core and many-core architectures

2013

The computing capabilities of current multi-core and many-core architectures have been used in crowd simulations for both enhancing crowd rendering and simulating continuum crowds. However, improving the scalability of crowd simulation systems by exploiting the inherent parallelism of these architectures is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose different parallelization strategies for the collision check procedure that takes place in agent-based simulations. These strategies are designed for exploiting the parallelism in both multi-core and many-core architectures like graphic processing units (GPUs). As for the many-core implementations, we analyse the bottlenecks of a previous G…

k-out-of-n systems: an exact formula for the stationary availability and multi-objective configuration design based on mathematical programming and T…

2018

[EN] Reliability and availability analyses are recognized as essential for guiding decision makers in the implementation of actions addressed to improve the technical and economical performance of complex systems. For industrial systems with reparable components, the most interesting parameter used to drive maintenance is the stationary availability. In this regard, the present paper proposes an exact formula for computing the system stationary availability of a k-out-of-n system. Such a formula is proved to be in agreement with the fundamental theorem of Markov chains. Then, a multi-objective mathematical model is formulated for choosing the optimal system configuration design. The Pareto …

QuBiLS-MIDAS: A parallel free-software for molecular descriptors computation based on multilinear algebraic maps

2014

The present report introduces the QuBiLS-MIDAS software belonging to the ToMoCoMD-CARDD suite for the calculation of three-dimensional molecular descriptors (MDs) based on the two-linear (bilinear), three-linear, and four-linear (multilinear or N-linear) algebraic forms. Thus, it is unique software that computes these tensor-based indices. These descriptors, establish relations for two, three, and four atoms by using several (dis-)similarity metrics or multimetrics, matrix transformations, cutoffs, local calculations and aggregation operators. The theoretical background of these N-linear indices is also presented. The QuBiLS-MIDAS software was developed in the Java programming language and …

Providing Full Awareness to Distributed Virtual Environments Based on Peer-to-Peer Architectures

2006

In recent years, large scale distributed virtual environments (DVEs) have become a major trend in distributed applications, mainly due to the enormous popularity of multiplayer online games in the entertainment industry. Since architectures based on networked servers seems to be not scalable enough to support massively multiplayer applications, peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures have been proposed as an efficient and truly scalable solution for this kind of systems. However, the main challenge of P2P architectures consists of providing each avatar with updated information about which other avatars are its neighbors. We have denoted this problem as the awareness problem. Although some proposal…

A Distributed Framework for Scalable Large-Scale Crowd Simulation

2007

Emerging applications in the area of Emergency Response and Disaster Management are increasingly demanding interactive capabilities to allow for the quick understanding of a critical situation, in particular in urban environments. A key component of these interactive simulations is how to recreate the behavior of a crowd in real- time while supporting individual behaviors. Crowds can often be unpredictable and present mixed behaviors such as panic or aggression, that can very rapidly change based on unexpected new elements introduced into the environment. We present preliminary research specifically oriented towards the simulation of large crowds for emergency response and rescue planning s…

The SUMMA Platform: A Scalable Infrastructure for Multi-lingual Multi-media Monitoring

2018

The open-source SUMMA Platform is a highly scalable distributed architecture for monitoring a large number of media broadcasts in parallel, with a lag behind actual broadcast time of at most a few minutes. The Platform offers a fully automated media ingestion pipeline capable of recording live broadcasts, detection and transcription of spoken content, translation of all text (original or transcribed) into English, recognition and linking of Named Entities, topic detection, clustering and crosslingual multi-document summarization of related media items, and last but not least, extraction and storage of factual claims in these news items. Browser-based graphical user interfaces provide humans…

Scalable Virtual Network Video-Optimizer for Adaptive Real-Time Video Transmission in 5G Networks

2020

The increasing popularity of video applications and ever-growing high-quality video transmissions (e.g., 4K resolutions), has encouraged other sectors to explore the growth of opportunities. In the case of health sector, mobile Health services are becoming increasingly relevant in real-time emergency video communication scenarios where a remote medical experts’ support is paramount to a successful and early disease diagnosis. To minimize the negative effects that could affect critical services in a heavily loaded network, it is essential for 5G video providers to deploy highly scalable and priorizable in-network video optimization schemes to meet the expectations of a large quantity of vide…

Controlled delivery of naltrexone by an intraoral device: in vivo study on human subjects.

2013

Naltrexone is widely used in the treatment of opiate addiction but its current peroral administration is characterized by low bioavailability with various side effects. The development of a long-acting transbuccal delivery device (IntelliDrug) for NLX may be useful to improve patient compliance and the therapy effectiveness. The aims of the study are (a) to test basic safety and effectiveness of controlled transbuccal drug delivery on human subjects; (b) to compare NLX bioavailability following transbuccal delivery vs per os conventional delivery; and (c) to test the hypothesis that transbuccal delivery is more efficient than the conventional route. In this randomized cross-over pilot study…

Bioavailability in vivo of naltrexone following transbuccal administration by an electronically-controlled intraoral device: a trial on pigs.

2010

Naltrexone (NLX), an opioid antagonist, is widely used in the treatment of opiate addiction, alcoholism and smoking cessation. Its current peroral administration induces various adverse side effects and has limited efficacy since bioavailability and patient compliance are poor. The development of a long-acting drug delivery system of NLX may overcome the current drawbacks and help in the improvement of treatment of addiction. The primary endpoints of this study were: a) to compare the NLX bioavailability and pharmacokinetics after delivering a single transbuccal dose, released by a prototype of intraoral device, versus an intravenous (I.V.) bolus of the same drug dose; b) to verify the func…

The role of the hospital pharmacy in the storage and supply of antidotes

2013

Cases of poisoning have been analyzed with the aim of estimating both the incidence and the seriousness of such xenobiotic effects, the major determinant agents, and the related antidotes used in hospital departments. From 2009 to November 2012, a survey of the availability of antidotes in the emergency room services was carried out in all hospital pharmacies under the Palermo Health Authority: Policlinico Paolo Giaccone, ARNAS Civico di Cristina Benefratelli, Azienda Ospedaliera Ospedali Riuniti Villa Sofia-Cervello. Figures show that the majority of poisoning events were caused by the use/abuse of drugs, especially psychopharmaceuticals, alcohol and narcotic substances. This overdose of m…
