BEGIN: Big Data Enabled Energy-Efficient Vehicular Edge Computing

2018

Vehicular edge computing is essential to support future emerging multimedia-rich and delay-sensitive applications in vehicular networks. However, the massive deployment of edge computing infrastructures induces new problems including energy consumption and carbon pollution. This motivates us to develop BEGIN (Big data enabled EnerGy-efficient vehIcular edge computiNg), a programmable, scalable, and flexible framework for integrating big data analytics with vehicular edge computing. In this article, we first present a comprehensive literature review. Then the overall design principle of BEGIN is described with an emphasis on computing domain and data domain convergence. In the next section, …

Iron intake among Lebanese women: sociodemographic factors, iron-rich dietary patterns, and preparation of hummus, a Mediterranean dish

2021

Background: Plant-based foods such as hummus are alternative to animal protein, and when properly pre-pared, they help to alleviate nutritional iron deficiency that leads to anemia, a global health problem. Objective: The objective was to assess iron intake among Lebanese women and related participant’s charac-teristics, discern iron-rich dietary patterns, evaluate their association with nutrients intake and participant’s sociodemographic characteristics, and identify the women preparing hummus traditionally and properly for an enhanced iron bioavailability. Design: A cross-sectional study of 400 Lebanese women (18–74 years old) was conducted in Lebanon. Data from a questionnaire, including…

Changes in functional properties of vegetables induced by high pressure treatment

2002

Abstract Ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) hydrostatic exposure in excess of 100 MPa is being used to inactivate micro-organisms as well as to induce texture changes to foods without thermal degradation. The UHP process is said not only to preserve flavour and food product taste but also natural properties of biological products. The influence of high pressure on functional properties of a choice of vegetables was evaluated. The treatments were at pressures around 600 MPa and also in combination with elevated temperatures and in comparison with thermal treatment. Carrots, tomatoes and broccoli were investigated (crushed or liquid extracts). The following characteristics were assessed: content of hea…

A User-Balanced System for IP Telephony in WLANs

2008

Wireless IP telephony is becoming very popular between the users of large wireless local area networks (WLANs). This increment has been mainly caused because it allows cost savings. Although, large WLANs use to provide high availability and redundancy, WLANs lack on the available throughput when there are many IP telephony users. In this paper we present a system that reallocates IP telephony devices when the system detects that an AP is overloaded. The algorithm and the frames used for our proposal are described. Measurements taken show how the bandwidth consumed is transferred from an access point to another when our proposal is running. Finally, we show the time needed to re-associate re…

Characterisation and Anaerobic Batch Degradation of Materials Accumulating in Anaerobic Digesters Treating Poultry Slaughterhouse Waste

2001

We characterised materials accumulating in two failed mesophilic semi-continuous anaerobic digesters treating poultry slaughterhouse waste and, for reference, materials in the two well-performing digesters, to find the anaerobic degradability of these materials and the factors affecting their degradation. We also studied materials accumulating and stratifying in various layers in one of the two well-performing digesters. The material from the most severely failed digesters produced methane sluggishly and did not improve appreciably even with 33 percent dilution suggesting that the recovery of failed process is slow. The methane production was apparently affected by the accumulated long-chai…

HTTP-level e-commerce data based on server access logs for an online store

2020

Abstract Web server logs have been extensively used as a source of data on the characteristics of Web traffic and users’ navigational patterns. In particular, Web bot detection and online purchase prediction using methods from artificial intelligence (AI) are currently key areas of research. However, in reality, it is hard to obtain logs from actual online stores and there is no common dataset that can be used across different studies. Moreover, there is a lack of studies exploring Web traffic over a longer period of time, due to the unavailability of long-term data from server logs. The need to develop reliable models of Web traffic, Web user navigation, and e-customer behaviour calls for …

Mercury and selenium in fish and shellfish: Occurrence, bioaccessibility and uptake by Caco-2 cells

2012

This study evaluates Hg and Se concentrations and bioaccessibility (element solubilised after simulated gastrointestinal digestion) in 16 raw seafood species consumed in Spain. The concentrations varied greatly (Hg, 3.8-1621 ng/g wet weight, ww; Se, 84-1817 ng/g ww). Only one sample of swordfish exceeded the Hg limit permitted in Spain (1mg/kg), and for this sample the Hg/Se molar ratio and Se Health Benefit Value food safety criteria also indicated the presence of a risk. Bioaccessibility of Hg (35-106%) and Se (17-125%) was very variable and the Hg/Se molar ratio in the bioaccessible fraction was less than one for all samples. Transport by Caco-2 cells, an intestinal epithelium model, was…

Data from: Inter-annual variation and long-term trends in proportions of resident individuals in partially migratory birds

2016

Partial migration – a part of a population migrates and another part stays resident year-round on the breeding site – is probably the most common type of migration in the animal kingdom, yet it has only lately garnered more attention. Theoretical studies indicate that in partially migratory populations, the proportion of resident individuals (PoR) should increase in high latitudes in response to the warming climate, but empirical evidence exists for few species. We provide the first comprehensive overview of the environmental factors affecting PoR and the long-term trends in PoR by studying 27 common partially migratory bird species in Finland. The annual PoR values were calculated by divid…

RNACache: Fast Mapping of RNA-Seq Reads to Transcriptomes Using MinHashing

2021

The alignment of reads to a transcriptome is an important initial step in a variety of bioinformatics RNA-seq pipelines. As traditional alignment-based tools suffer from high runtimes, alternative, alignment-free methods have recently gained increasing importance. We present a novel approach to the detection of local similarities between transcriptomes and RNA-seq reads based on context-aware minhashing. We introduce RNACache, a three-step processing pipeline consisting of minhashing of k-mers, match-based (online) filtering, and coverage-based filtering in order to identify truly expressed transcript isoforms. Our performance evaluation shows that RNACache produces transcriptomic mappings …

Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on the Synthesis, Structure, Reactivity, and Bonding of the Stannylene-Iron Complex Bis{{bis(2-tert-butyl…

2000

The pi-(arene)bis(stannylene) complex bis(bis(2-tert-butyl-4,5,6-trimethylphenyl)SnFe(eta6-toluene) (Sn-Fe-Sn, 15) is accessible in high yields by a metal-atom-mediated synthesis between iron atoms, toluene, and the stannylene [bis(2-tert-butyl-4,5,6-trimethylphenyl)Sn](3). Complex 15 has a half-sandwich structure with short Fe -Sn bonds (2.432(1) A) and a trigonal-planar coordination at both the Fe and Sn atoms. The distance between the two Sn centers is 3.56 A. Complex 15 is stable under ambient conditions and displays a pi-arene lability, so far rarely observed for (arene)iron complexes; this leads to an irreversible substitution of the arene and formation of fivefold-coordinated zeroval…
