Teaching and the dialectic of recognition
2004
Abstract In this article, the processes of recognition within education are discussed. Frequently, recognition is reduced to polite behaviour or etiquette. Another narrow view of recognition is, behaviouristically speaking, to regard it as mere feedback. We claim that authentic recognition is a different matter. Receiving recognition, as Charles Taylor has put it, is ‘a vital human need’. Educational practices are in many ways associated with the processes of recognition. In this article, we develop Axel Honneth's three-level theory of struggle for recognition. Subsequently, we introduce our ideas of positive and negative circles of recognition. At the level of the community, a positive cir…
Oppressive Faces of Whiteness in Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress
2018
Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress contributes significantly to the literary debate on the definition of whiteness. The socio-historical construction of whiteness emerging from the novel is amplified by white imagery dovetailing with the claims made about white people directly. For the African American first person narrator, Easy Rawlins, living in post-World War II Los Angeles, whiteness mostly spells terror. The oppressive faces of whiteness consist in the following trajectories: property relations, economic exploitation, labour relations, the legal system, different miens of oppressive white masculinity denigrating blackness, spatial dynamics of post-World War II Los Angeles and the w…

2020
The development of new models of work organization and the complementary advance of flexible guidelines for the use of the labor force had as a correlate a profound change in techniques for the evaluation of workers. Thus, the typical model of Fordism, based on qualifications, was replaced by a different one based on competencies, whereby the strong relationship of the former was abandoned with the determination of the technical knowledge required for each job to move to a system which the priority is placed in the individual attitude. The consequent individualization of performance evaluations can lead to a possible loss of objectivity. In this article we develop a theoretical comparison b…
Migration and imperfect labor markets: theory and cross-country evidence from Denmark, Germany and the UK
2014
We investigate the labor market effects of immigration in Denmark, Germany and the UK, three countries which are characterized by considerable differences in labor market institutions and welfare states. Institutions such as collective bargaining, minimum wages, employment protection and unemployment benefits affect the way in which wages respond to labor supply shocks, and, hence, the labor market effects of immigration. We employ a wage-setting approach which assumes that wages decline with the unemployment rate, albeit imperfectly. We find that the wage and employment effects of immigration depend on wage flexibility and the composition of the labor supply shock. In Germany immigration i…
European Integration and the Disembedding of Labour Market Regulation: Transnational Labour Relations at theEuropeanCentralBank Construction Site
2013
European integration through mutual recognition has facilitated the growth of a pan-European labour supply system in which transnational subcontractors ‘post’ workers from low-wage areas to higher wage areas. This allows employers to create spaces of exception in which the national industrial relations system of the country where work occurs does not fully apply. Drawing on interviews with managers, workers, unionists and works councillors at the European Central Bank construction site in Frankfurt, Germany, this article shows how transnational subcontracting allows employers to access, and create competition between, sovereign regulatory regimes. It concludes that high-cost, high-collectiv…

In June 2012, the European Union (EU) disbursed 41.3 billion Euros to the Spanish government to cover the banking liquidity needs. This "rescue" not only involved reforms related to the regulation of the financial sector. They also brought the labor reforms of 2010-2012. Such reforms involved a radical change in the model of Union Law in our country, and were originated in the context of a UE procedure for excessive deficit. Within the framework of this procedure, Spain had to address the reform of the labor relations system. Law 3/2012, of July 6, of urgent measures for the reform of the labor market, complied with the conditions imposed by the European Council to that effect. The internat…

2016
The aim of this research paper is to present a new tutoring model for the Final Degree Project (FDP ), related to the university reform process. The experimentation process of this model was carried out in the Degree of Labour Relations and Human Resources at the University of Valencia. The consistency of the supporting process offered by the professor to the student, and the main innovations introduced in higher education by the convergence of "Bologna Process" will be analysed. The two main points of the new educational scenario, that is to say the change in the teacher's role and their relationship with the student are both taken into account in the model design. Furthermore, the pillars o…
