Flow characteristics of a channelized debris-flow and implications in numerical modelling: a study case
2012
As it is known, debris flows are characterized by extreme propagation rapidity and by the ability to move high quantity of fluid mass. Furthermore, debris flows are fluid enough to travel long distances and, thus, to cause damage in vast areas, even far from the trigger ones. Debris-flow runout estimations are important for the delineation of potentially hazardous areas. Especially in recent years, several researches have been conducted in order to define predicitive models. But, existing runout estimation methods need input parameters that can be difficult to estimate. Recent advances in theory and in experimental research have allowed the assessment of the physics of the debris flows. On …
Defensive behavior in healthcare: the role of organizational factors
Defensive medicine occurs when a healthcare practitioner performs treatment or procedure to avoid exposure to malpractice litigation. Being the consequences of such a behavior nefarious both in terms of patient care, healthcare operations and cost, much has been done in terms of research and practice with the aim to reduce the likelihood of its occurrence. Because defensive medicine is strictly related to the doctor perception of the risk of litigation and its legal repercussions, in the last years, jurisprudence and insurance contract studies in healthcare focused on this topic, as well as national laws have been introduced with the goal of contrasting it. This paper argues and demonstrate…
Transcriptional Rewiring, Adaptation, and the Role of Gene Duplication in the Metabolism of Ethanol of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
2020
Ethanol is the main by-product of yeast sugar fermentation that affects microbial growth parameters, being considered a dual molecule, a nutrient and a stressor. Previous works demonstrated that the budding yeast arose after an ancient hybridization process resulted in a tier of duplicated genes within its genome, many of them with implications in this ethanol “produce-accumulate-consume” strategy. The evolutionary link between ethanol production, consumption, and tolerance versus ploidy and stability of the hybrids is an ongoing debatable issue. The implication of ancestral duplicates in this metabolic rewiring, and how these duplicates differ transcriptionally, remains unsolved. Here, we …
Respiration and growth rates of F0 and F1 larval and juvenile European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax in response to ocean acidification and warming
2022
Ongoing climate change is leading to warmer and more acidic oceans. The future distribution of fish within the oceans depends on their capacity to adapt to these new environments. Only few studies have examined the effects of ocean acidification (OA) and warming (OW) on the metabolism of long-lived fish over successive generations. We therefore aimed to investigate the effect of OA on larval and juvenile growth and metabolism on two successive generations of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) as well as the effect of OAW on larval and juvenile growth and metabolism of the second generation. European sea bass is a large economically important fish species with a long generation time…
Emotional Dimensions of User Experience ? A User Psychological Analysis
2014
User psychology is a human–technology interaction research approach that uses psychological concepts, theories, and findings to structure problems of human–technology interaction. As the notion of user experience has become central in human–technology interaction research and in product development, it is necessary to investigate the user psychology of user experience. This analysis of emotional human–technology interaction is based on the psychological theory of basic emotions. Three studies, two laboratory experiments, and one field study are used to investigate the basic emotions and the emotional mind involved in user experience. The first and second experiments study the measurement of…
