Green methodology for quality control of elemental content of infant milk powder

Abstract A green methodology for the direct determination of elemental content in infant milk powder samples from 0 to 3 years was developed. A portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) tool has been used as a direct method for the quantification of five essential elements (Ca, K, Fe, Cu and Zn). For analysis pellets from 0.8 g of each sample weight were made and analyzed. Due to the high dependence of the ED-XRF signal with the sample matrix, external calibrations using cocoa powder diluted with glucose were performed. The lactose operon from Lactobacillus casei is involved in the transport and metabolism of the human milk oligosaccharide core-2 N-acetyllactosamine

The lactose operon (lacTEGF) from Lactobacillus casei strain BL23 has been previously studied. The lacT gene codes for a transcriptional antiterminator, lacE and lacF for the lactose-specific phosphoenolpyruvate: phosphotransferase system (PTS) EIICB and EIIA domains, respectively, and lacG for the phospho-β-galactosidase. In this work, we have shown that L. casei is able to metabolize N-acetyllactosamine (LacNAc), a disaccharide present at human milk and intestinal mucosa. Population genetic structure and milk production traits in Girgentana goat breed

The aim of this work was to evaluate the genetic status of the Girgentana goat, an endangered breed from Sicily (Italy), using microsatellite markers. Furthermore, as the main purpose of the Girgentana breed is milk production, quantitative milk traits were investigated, including fatty acid profile. Molecular data from CSN1S1, CSN2, CSN1S2, and CSN3 casein genes were also used to infer haplotypes. A total of 264 individuals were collected. Background : A new web-based food frequency questionnaire (the ASSO–FFQ) was developed within the ASSO Project funded by the Italian Ministry of Health. Objective : The aim of the present study is to assess the validity of the ASSO–FFQ at food groups, energy, and nutrients level. Design and subjects : The validation study compared the ASSO–FFQ against a weighted food record (WFR) measuring foods, beverages and supplements intake, compiled during the week following the ASSO–FFQ administration. The turnover rate of a monosaccharide or poly alcohol in most cases depends on the mode of application. With the exception of glucose or galactose carbohydrates are metabolized faster after intravenous application than after oral application. This shows, that absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract is a rate limiting factor. Dealing with adaptive processes we therefore have to be concerned with absorptive mechanisms on one hand and enzymatic reactions in the cellular metabolism on the other hand.

Citrate metabolism by this strain leads to the production of acetate, CO2 and C4 compounds (diacetyl, acetoin, 2,3-butylene glycol).
