Staphylococcus saprophyticus, an important cause of urinary tract infections, produces two major surface proteins, the S. saprophyticus surface-associated protein (Ssp) and the hemagglutinin, which mediates fibronectin binding and also functions as the major adhesion of the organism. The hemagglutinating and fibronectin binding functions probably reside on different parts of the molecule. To identify a receptor on eukaryotic cells, binding and inhibition studies with acidic and neutral glycosphingolipids, carbohydrates, and proteins of sheep erythrocyte membranes were conducted. This research aimed to extract mucilage polysaccharides (MP) from Amanita hemibapha subspecies javanica (Corner and Bas), and further fractionate them using anion-exchange chromatography, yielding two fractions (MPF1 and MPF2). The crude extract, and fractions mainly consisted of carbohydrates (83.5–93.2%) with minor amounts of proteins (5.40–7.20%), and sulphates (1.40–9.30%). Determination of the monosaccharide composition revealed that glucose was the major unit, followed by galactose, mannose, rhamnose, and arabinose. Crystal structures of O-acetylated 2-acylamino-2-deoxy-d-galactose derivatives

The X-ray structures of 1,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-2-deoxy-alpha-D-galactopyranoside derivatives with four different 2-(acylamino) substituents have been determined with Mo K(alpha) radiation at 123 K. The structure of the 2-acetylamino derivative and of its acyl-homologs with a 2-(propanoylamino)-, 2-(butanoylamino)-, and 2-(2-methyl-propanoylamino)-group crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2. The pyranose unit of all compounds has the usual 4C(1) shape. The different orientations of the 6-O-acetyl-groups are discussed. Conformations of the acylamino-group are compared to those found in the crystal structure of N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine.

We report the Sabella spallanzanii mucus bacterial agglutination response after inorganic arsenic (As) exposure. As is actively adsorbed from the surrounding environment and accumulated at high concentrations in tissues as an anti-predatory strategy. Here we investigated the effect of high As concentrations on its immunobiological response. It may act on mucus lectins and on its ability to agglutinate bacteria. We concluded that As at high concentrations leads to the inhibition of pathogen recognition. Galactosylated polymeric carriers for liver targeting of sorafenib

In this paper, we describe the preparation of liver-targeted polymeric micelles potentially able to carry sorafenib to hepatocytes for treatment of hepatocarcinoma (HCC), exploiting the presence of carbohydrate receptors, ASGPR. These micelles were prepared starting from a galactosylated polylactide-polyaminoacid conjugate. Abstract Food induced viscosity in the gastrointestinal tract is reported to reduce the bioavailability of tablets containing BCS class 3 drugs, mainly by retarding their disintegration and dissolution of the active pharmaceutical ingredient. A whey-predominant formula induces fecal microbiota similar to that found in breast-fed infants

To compare the effects of a whey-predominant infant formula and breast milk on the gut microbiota, growth, and tolerance of infants, we conducted an open, prospective, parallel-group study in healthy newborn infants. A total of 60 infants were enrolled, and 55 completed the study. Of the 55 infants, 21 were breast-fed and 34 were fed a whey-predominant study formula that had low phosphate concentration (31 mg/100 kcal), was reduced in protein (1.8 g/100 kcal or 0.43 g/kJ), had lactose as the sole carbohydrate source, and had an amino acid profile and buffering capacity similar to that of human milk. Influence of Culture Medium on Multiplication of Lactic Bacteria Isolated From Organic Milk in Order to Obtain Biomass

Abstract This paper aims to establish direct and predictive methods (statistical) the possibility of obtaining lactic bacteria Lactobacillus delbrueckii var. bulgaricus in higher amounts by using culture medium enriched with carbohydrates in different percentages, for using these in obtaining organic products. The results led to the selection of MRS culture medium enriched with 1% glucose, 2% lactose and 3% maltose as a substrate in order to use multiplication of lactic bacteria isolated from organic milk, collected from organic farms in the area of Sibiu, Romania.
