A 1-year maintenance after early adjuvant intravesical chemotherapy has a limited efficacy in preventing recurrence of intermediate risk non-muscle-i…
2010
Study Type – Therapy (RCT) Level of Evidence 1b OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of 1-year maintenance after a 6-week cycle of early intravesical chemotherapy, as the role of maintenance in intravesical chemotherapy is debated. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between May 2002 and August 2003, 577 patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMI-BC) underwent transurethral resection (TUR) and early intravesical chemotherapy (epirubicin, 80 mg/50 mL). They were randomized between a 6-week induction cycle and the induction cycle plus maintenance with 10 monthly instillations. In all, 95 patients with T1G3, Tis or single and primary Ta–T1 G1–G2 tumours were excluded; 482 patients at intermediate ri…
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy, TUR and radiotherapy in T2-T4 NO MO bladder carcinoma
1997
– Forty patients affected by locally advanced carcinoma of the bladder were submitted to up-front chemotherapy followed by TUR and radiotherapy. A complete response was obtained in 27 patients (67.5%). A residual mass was present in 13 (32.5%) patients. At a mean follow-up of 38 months (range: 18–112 months), 7 patients showed a recurrence that was superficial in 3 cases and infiltrating the muscular layer in 4. Fifteen patients (37.5%), 12 of whom disease-free, are alive with a mean survival of 65 months. Five more patients died of non-related disease.
Psychotropic Drugs in the Management of Chronic Pain Syndromes
1993
Psychotropic drugs have been integrated into the management of chronic pain syndromes for more than 30 years. Numerous open and controlled studies have taken place evaluating especially the antinociceptive efficacy of antidepressive drugs. This survey comprises the results of clinical reports, open clinical studies, placebo-controlled studies, and comparative studies of different substances. It will be shown that antidepressants are by far the best evaluated psychopharmacological substances, showing superiority against placebo in 70% of a total of 67 placebo-controlled studies. The synopsis of controlled comparison studies of different antidepressants tends to demonstrate a superiority of c…

Harnessing User Values to Understand Value Co-Creation and Co-Destruction in Augmented Reality Mobile Games
2021
This paper explores the phenomena of value co- creation and co-destruction in augmented reality (AR) mobile games. More specifically, we aim to achieve an in-depth understanding of value co-creation and co- destruction occurring in Pokémon GO and the user values underlying these occurrences. Service-dominant (S-D) logic provides our study with a lens for understanding users as active co-creators, co- destroyers, and determinants of value. Further, the means-end theory establishes users’ personal values and goals as the basis for service value determination. We uncover key values highlighted in users’ positive and negative gaming experiences through a qualitative content analysis of 43 in-de…
Prevalence of biliary lithiasis in the elderly people of a small town in Sicily
1992
The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of biliary lithiasis (BL) and its major associated factors in the elderly people of a small town in Sicily. All inhabitants over the age of 65 were interviewed and underwent a general physical examination, blood tests and ultrasonography of the gallbladder and biliary tracts. The final group included 328 subjects (162 men and 166 women), representing 63.1% of the population asked to participate, with a mean age of 74.3 +/- 6.8 years (range 65-95). The prevalence of BL (lithiasis in progress + subjects cholecystectomized for previous calculosis) was 18.6%. No male subject had been cholecystectomized. Prevalence was higher in women …
Prognostic Significance of Histopathological Grading and Immunoreactivity for p53 and p21/WAF1 in Grade 2 pTa Transitional Cell Carcinoma of …
2001
At present, there are no predictors of tumour behaviour for grade (G) 2 pTa transitional cell carcinomas (TCC) of the bladder. Here we analyse the prognostic relevance of histopathological grading and the immunohistochemical detection of p53 and p21/WAF1.70 patients were newly diagnosed with G2 pTa TCC of the bladder based on transurethral resection specimens. Two pathologists, blinded with respect to the clinical outcome, confirmed the initial grade and subclassified the G2 lesions into G2a and G2b carcinomas based on the degree of nuclear atypia and the number of mitoses. Immunoreactivity for p53 and p21/WAF1 was evaluated semiquantitatively. There were 52 G2a and 18 G2b tumours, mean foll…
Prognostic Value of p53, p21/WAF1, Bcl-2, Bax, Bak and Ki-67 Immunoreactivity in pT1 G3 Urothelial Bladder Carcinomas
2001
pT1 G3 bladder carcinomas are heterogeneous with respect to tumor recurrence and progression. Whereas some urologists treat these carcinomas by repeated transurethral resections often followed by intravesical chemotherapy or BCG instillation, others recommend cystectomy after tumor recurrence or early cystectomy after the initial diagnosis. Our goal was to determine the prognostic value of p53, p21/WAF1, Bcl-2, Bax, Bak, and Ki-67 immunoreactivity in these tumors. There were 30 patients with a new histopathological diagnosis of pT1 G3 urothelial carcinoma based on a transurethral resection specimen. Representative sections of these specimens were examined for the above markers. All patients…

Egg consumption and human health: an umbrella review of observational studies
2019
Egg consumption has been an area of controversy regarding its impact on human health largely due to the content in cholesterol and its potential role in cardio-metabolic outcomes. This study aimed to summarise the level of evidence of egg consumption on various health outcomes. A systematic search for meta-analyses was performed: study design, dose-response relationship, heterogeneity and agreement of results over time, and identification of potential confounding factors were considered to assess the level of evidence. Results from this umbrella review showed a substantial no association between egg consumption and a number of health outcomes, including cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic …
