Establishment and interspecific associations in two species of Ichthyocotylurus (Trematoda) parasites in perch (Perca fluviatilis)

2011

Abstract Background Co-infections of multiple parasite species in hosts may lead to interspecific associations and subsequently shape the structure of a parasite community. However, few studies have focused on these associations in highly abundant parasite species or, in particular, investigated how the associations develop with time in hosts exposed to co-infecting parasite species for the first time. We investigated metacercarial establishment and interspecific associations in the trematodes Ichthyocotylurus variegatus and I. pileatus co-infecting three age cohorts of young perch (Perca fluviatilis). Results We found that the timing of transmission of the two Ichthyocotylurus species was …

Urology Residency Training in Italy: Results of the First National Survey

2018

Background: Numerous surveys have been performed to determine the competence and the confidence of residents. However, there is no data available on the condition of Italian residents in urology. Objective: To investigate the status of training among Italian residents in urology regarding scientific activity and surgical exposure. Design, setting, and participants: A web-based survey that included 445 residents from all of the 25 Italian Residency Programmes was conducted between September 2015 and November 2015. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: The main outcomes were represented by scientific activity, involvement in surgical procedures, and overall satisfaction. Results and …

FIBRONECTIN (FN) AND UROTHELIAL DAMAGE SECONDARY TO ADJUVANT INTRAVESICAL THERAPY

2014

Introduction and Objectives: Intravesical chemotherapy has been proven effective in preventing recurrence of low-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). BCG is recognised as the best conservative treatment for intermediate and high risk NMIBC. Maintenance for at least one year is required to ameliorate the efficacy of adjuvant therapy. Discomfort and toxicity often cause interruption of adjuvant therapy, BCG particularly. Almost 50% of the patients undergoing BCG does not complete one year. A biomarker of urothelium damage would be helpful for timely detection of toxicity in order to ameliorate patient’s tolerance and compliance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the gen…

Laparoscopic endopelvic sacral implantation of a Brindley controller for recovery of bladder function in a paralyzed patient

2008

Background: A number of techniques are being investigated to accomplish bladder control recovery in paralyzed patients using the neurostimulation, but currently, all techniques are based on the dorsal implantation of the electrodes using a laminectomy. Methods: On 27 April 2006 we performed a laparoscopic implantation of a Finetech-Brindley bladder controller on the endopelvic sacral roots in a Th8 completely paralyzed woman who had previously undergone the removal of a Brindley controller due to an arachnoiditis after extrathecal implantation with intradural sacral deafferentation. Results: We required about 3.5 h for the entire surgical procedure; no complications occurred and the patient…

p53 Gene Therapy

2002

Based on the frequent inactivation of the p53 gene product in human malignancy, and its functional involvement in tumor suppression, cell cycle control and apoptosis, p53 was identified as an attractive target for somatic gene therapy strategies in cancer. Several pilot and phase I studies explored the intratumoral injection of viral expression vectors encoding the p53 cDNA in patients with advanced cancer. These studies confirmed the safety and feasibility of this approach. Further, vector-specific transgene expression and surrogate markers for biological activity of the transgene were demonstrated. Local tumor regression, or stabilization of tumor growth, were observed in some studies, an…

Are polymorphisms of the β3 -adrenoceptor gene associated with an altered bladder function?

2012

Aims As the presence of a Trp64Arg polymorphism of the gene encoding the β3-adrenoceptor (B3AR) has been linked to the presence of overactive bladder, we investigated whether additional polymorphisms are detectable in this gene and explore their relationships parameters related to lower urinary tract function. Methods The coding region and adjacent stretches of the B3AR gene was sequenced in 91 patients. In total, 1015 patients from a single academic hospital were genotyped for the presence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms. Symptom scores and parameters from pressure-flow studies were analyzed relative to genotype in the B3AR gene. Results No frequent novel polymorphisms were detected…

Classic bladder exstrophy: Frequent 22q11.21 duplications and definition of a 414 kb phenocritical region

2014

Background: Classic bladder exstrophy (CBE) is the most common form of the bladder exstrophy and epispadias complex. Previously, we and others have identified four patients with a duplication of 22q11.21 among a total of 96 unrelated CBE patients. Methods: Here, we investigated whether this chromosomal aberration was commonly associated with CBE/bladder exstrophy and epispadias complex in an extended case-control sample. Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and microarray-based analysis were used to identify 22q11.21 duplications in 244 unrelated bladder exstrophy and epispadias complex patients (including 217 CBE patients) and 665 healthy controls. Results: New duplications of …
