The clinical value of PSA increase during intravesical adjuvant therapy for nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer.

2016

Introduction Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA), Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) increase after intravesical BCG has been reported. The need of prostate biopsy in these patients is object of debate. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of intravesical therapy on PSA after transurethral resection (TUR) of nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Materials and methods Patients undergoing intravesical chemotherapy or immunotherapy for NMIBC were entered. PSA was measured before TUR, before the first and after the sixth instillation, 30 and 90 days after the last instillation. Patients with PSA ≥4 ng/ml or palpable prostate nodule were excluded. Results Out of 130 patients, 105 were e…

Orthotopic Liver Transplantation: T-Tube or Not T-Tube? Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Results

2009

Background The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes after duct-to-duct anastomoses with or without biliary T-tube in orthotopic liver transplantation. Methods We pooled the outcomes of 1027 patients undergoing choledocho-choledochostomy with or without T-tube in 9 of 46 screened trials by means of fixed or random effects models. Results The "without T-tube" and "with T-tube" groups had equivalent outcomes for: anastomotic bile leaks or fistulas, choledocho-jejunostomy revisions, dilatation and stenting, hepatic artery thromboses, retransplantation, and mortality due to biliary complications. The "without T-tube" group had better outcomes when considering "fewer episodes of cholangi…

Changes of inflammatory mediators in obese patients after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

2010

Background Obesity is associated with the impairment of immunological functions. The aim of this study was to analyze some inflammatory mediators in obese subjects who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods Seventeen consecutive female patients with a BMI ranging from 35 to 45 kg/m2 (obese) and 17 consecutive female patients with BMI ranging from 20 to 25 kg/m2 (nonobese) were included in the study. All patients were affected by symptomatic gallbladder stone disease and underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Changes in levels of leukocytes, neutrophils, IL-6, IL-10, leptin, and adiponectin were evaluated. Results We observed a significant increase in leukocyte and neutrophil level…

Prognostic factors and risk groups in T1G3 patients initially treated with BCG: Results of a multicenter retrospective series in 1743 patients

2013

Introduction and Objectives: The impact of prognostic factors in T1G3 patients (pts) is critical for proper treatment decision making, however most available data are from small series of pts. The aim of the current study is to assess prognostic factors in a large group of pts who received BCG as initial treatment of T1G3 tumours and identify a subgroup of high risk pts who should be considered for early cystectomy. Patients and Methods: Individual pt data were collected for 1743 ptsfrom 20 centers who received induction or maintenance BCG between 1990 and 2008. Using Cox regression analysis, the prognostic importance of the following variables were assessed for time to recurrence, progress…

Ethanol inhibits proliferation in astrocytes, an effect that was recently linked to the suppression of phosphatidic acid (PA) formation by phospholipase D (PLD). The present study investigates ethanol's effect on the induction of apoptosis in astrocytes and the formation of ceramide, an apoptotic signal. Evidence is presented that the formation of PA and ceramide may be reciprocally linked during ethanol exposure. In cultured rat cortical astrocytes, ethanol (0.3–1 %, v/v) induced nuclear fragmentation and DNA laddering indicative of apoptosis. Concomitantly, in cells prelabeled with [3H]-serine, ethanol caused a dose-dependent, biphasic increase of the [3H]-ceramide/ [3H]-sphingomyelin rat…

Malignant metastatic melanoma to the gallbladder: Report of a peculiar case

2020

Highlights • Melanoma is one of the most aggressive and one of the fastest growing types of cancer. The gallbladder envolvement from a metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma is a highly uncommon finding, usually associated with diffuse metastatic disease and observed during autopsy. • We report a case of a 35-years old Caucasian woman with isolated metastasis of gallbladder form cutaneous primary malignant melanoma underwent to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. • Malignant cutaneous melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the highest mortality. Isolated metastasis of gallbladder are barely described and mostly present in a widespread metastatic disease. Surgical treatment is indicated consi…

Clinical Translation and First In-Human Use of [44Sc]Sc-PSMA-617 for PET Imaging of Metastasized Castrate-Resistant Prostate Cancer

2017

Background: Various trivalent radiometals are well suited for labeling of DOTA-conjugated variants of Glu-ureido-based prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) inhibitors. The DOTA-conjugate PSMA-617 has proven high potential in PSMA radioligand therapy (PSMA-RLT) of prostate cancer as well as PET imaging when labeled with lutetium-177 and gallium-68 respectively. Considering the relatively short physical half-life of gallium-68 this positron emitter precludes prolonged acquisition periods, as required for pre-therapeutic dosimetry or intraoperative applications. In this context, the positron emitter scandium-44 is an attractive alternative for PET imaging. We report the synthesis of [44Sc…
