Differences in allozyme patterns between Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Diaphanosoma mongolianum, as revealed in Central European populations

Recent taxonomic revisions in the genus Diaphanosoma have made the uncertainty in species discrimination with morphological characters obvious. Therefore species characterization on a genetic basis seems to be required. Here we examined the genetic structure of two Diaphanosoma mongolianum populations and three Diaphanosoma brachyurum populations in Central Europe by allozyme electrophoresis. A genetic differentiation between both species was evident. 5 out of 9 tested loci carried diagnostic alleles. Increase of rotifer diversity after sewage diversion in the hypertrophic lagoon, Albufera of Valencia, Spain

The Albufera of Valencia is a large oligohaline hypertrophic lagoon, regulated by sluice gates according to the needs of the surrounding rice field cultivation. It is in a turbid state with permanent cyanobacterial blooms. A slight improvement was detected after diversion in the 1990s of part of the sewage flowing into it. After sewage diversion, we found that: (1) Chlorophyll concentration and rotifer densities decreased; (2) Rotifer proportions declined, due mainly to a relative increase in cladocerans; (3) Rotifer diversity increased. Response of a shallow Mediterranean lake to nutrient diversion: does it follow similar patterns as in northern shallow lakes?

In view of the paucity of data on the response of warm shallow lakes to reductions in nutrient loading, this paper presents a long-term limnological data set to document changes in the food-web of a shallow Mediterranean lake (Lake Albufera, Valencia, Spain) that has experienced reductions in phosphorus (P) (77%) and nitrogen (N) (24%) loading following sewage diversion. 2. Nine years after sewage diversion, P concentration in the lake was reduced by 30% but remained high (TP = 0.34 mg L−1), although the mean water retention time in the lake was only 0.1 years. Atrazine uptake, elimination, and bioconcentration by periphyton communities and Daphnia magna: effects of dissolved organic carbon.

The bioconcentration and toxicokinetics of atrazine in three different periphyton communities and in laboratory reared Daphnia magna were studied in natural and artificial waters with different dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and qualities. The exposure concentrations were similar to those short-lived peak concentrations found in contaminated waters. Atrazine uptake and elimination were very fast, and the bioconcentration was low both in periphyton and D. magna. The bioconcentration factors in D. magna were approx. 16% of those in periphyton. In a study of 106 sunfish, Mola mola (L.), from Mediterranean waters, 2,731 worms, belonging to 2 congeneric species of accacoeliids, Accacladocoelium macrocotyle (Diesing, 1858) Robinson, 1934 and Accacladocoelium nigroflavum (Rudolphi, 1819) Robinson, 1934 , were collected from the digestive system. Pacientes y metodo: La encuesta fue contestada por una muestra seleccionada al azar de 478 escolares de 12 anos y 401 de 15-16 anos. Resultados: El cepillado diario mas de una vez al dia fue realizado por el 52,3% de los ninos y una vez al dia por el 27,3%. Un 3% no se cepilla nunca y un 15,7% lo hace de vez en cuando. UV-B-Induced acute toxicity of pyrene to the waterflea Daphnia magna in natural freshwaters.

Abstract The effects of various water characteristics in natural freshwaters on the acute toxicity of one polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), pyrene, to a pelagic invertebrate Daphnia magna was studied under ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation and in the dark. Pyrene was photoactivated and was more toxic to D. magna in the presence of UV-B radiation. Dissolved organic material (DOM), measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), significantly reduced the photoenhanced toxicity of pyrene. Under UV-B radiation the EC50 values were lower and in relation to the amount of DOM, ranging from 3.0 to 30.0 μg/L pyrene, whereas in the dark they were between 29.2 and 54.8 μg/L and not related to the amount…

Organophosphonate utilization by the wild‐type strain of cladosporium resinae

We studied the biodegradation of compounds containing phosphorus‐to‐carbon bond by using wild‐type strain of Cladosporium resinae. The substrate specificity of the strain was studied and we found that it is able to utilize a range of structurally diverse organophosphonates as a sole source of phosphorus. This ability is inducible as indicated by the presence of a lag phase of the growth. A popular herbicide glyphosate is also degraded by the fungi. This indicates that Cladosporium resinae may play an important role in biodegradation of this herbicide. The strain which we used, however, did not metabolise any phosphonates when they served as the sole carbon or nitrogen sources.
