The homogenous mammalian order Lagomorpha comprises about 80 species in two families, Ochotonidae (pikas) and Leporidae (rabbits and hares). However, the phylogenetic relationships among leporids are controversial. Molecular data, particularly from mitochondrial sequences, give highly homoplasious signals. To resolve the controversy between mitochondrial and nuclear data, we analyzed genomic orthologous retroposon insertion sites, a virtually homoplasy-free marker system. Lactobacillus rennini sp. nov., isolated from rennin and associated with cheese spoilage.

Two bacterial strains, DSM 20253T and DSM 20254, isolated from rennin and regarded as causing cheese spoilage, were deposited in the DSMZ as Lactobacillus sp. by J. Stadhouders. The strains show 99·9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and have less than 94·3 % similarity with any other species of the genus. Lactobacillus coryniformis is their closest phylogenetic neighbour. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments confirmed that the two strains are members of the same species with separate status within the genus Lactobacillus. Large-scale hatchery releases are carried out for many marine fish species worldwide; nevertheless, the long-term effects of this practice on the genetic structure of natural populations remains unclear. The lack of knowledge is especially evident when independent stock enhancement programs are conducted simultaneously on the same species at different geographical locations, as occurs with red sea bream (Pagrus major, Temminck et Schlegel) in Japan. Pachyjoenia howa, a new symbiotic parabasalid joeniid flagellate of the termite Postelectrotermes howa

The Joenia-like lophomonad of Postelectrotermes howa is identified by light and electron microscopy as a new genus and species Pachyjoenia howa. Its flagellar area of about 1800 flagella is dome shaped. Basal bodies bear a composite root oriented counterclockwise in addition to the clockwise hook-shaped lamina present in other joeniids. There are four parallel privileged basal bodies. The main parabasal fibre is twisted around the axostyle and splits into several branches bearing Golgi bodies. Anatectic amphibole and restitic garnet in Variscan migmatite from NE Sardinia, Italy: insights into partial melting from mineral trace elements

We report results of a laser-ICP-MS investigation of trace element contents in the main constituent minerals of an amphibole-bearing migmatite from the Variscan orogen in northeastern Sardinia. The migmatite is associated with migmatised orthogneiss and Al-silicate-bearing pelitic migmatites. The protolith of the amphibole-bearing migmatite was a mid-Ordovician igneous rock of intermediate composition characterised by a biotite + plagioclase + quartz assemblage. The migmatite consists of mesosomes and tonalitic (or, less frequently, granodioritic) leucosomes, characterised by amphibole crystals (potassian ferropargasite) up to 2 cm in size. Abstract Late Devonian vertebrate communities within the Baltica zoogeographical Province are analysed for intra- and interprovincial connections. Components within the category of provincial endemics are used to assign the communities to a particular zoogeographical province. Marine and continental, presumably freshwater types of vertebrate dispersal are outlined. During the Late Devonian marine dispersal is displayed by ptyctodonts, struniiforms, and some dipnoans, and continental dispersal by psammosteids, acanthodians, and some arthrodires. We studied the spatial variability and within-year temporal changes in hydrological features, grain size composition and chemical characteristics of sediments, as well as macrofaunal assemblages, along a heavily modified inlet in the Gulf of Oristano (western Sardinia, Italy). The inlet connects the Cabras lagoon to the gulf through a series of convoluted creeks and man-made structures, including a dam and fish barriers built in the last three decades. Basaltic Rocks Analyzed by the Spirit Rover in Gusev Crater

The Spirit landing site in Gusev Crater on Mars contains dark, fine-grained, vesicular rocks interpreted as lavas. Pancam and MiniâThermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES) spectra suggest that all of these rocks are similar but have variable coatings and dust mantles. Magnified images of brushed and abraded rock surfaces show alteration rinds and veins. Rock interiors contain â¤25% megacrysts. Chemical analyses of rocks by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer are consistent with picritic basalts, containing normative olivine, pyroxenes, plagioclase, and accessory FeTi oxides.
