Immobilization has been shown to cause muscle atrophy and decreased total collagen synthesis in skeletal muscle. These changes can be counteracted by stretch. The purpose of this study was to find out the early effects of immobilization in shortened and lengthened positions on expression of type I and III collagen at pre- and post-translational level. The temporal and spatial gene expression of collagen type I and type II during the development of the human long bones was studied by the technique of in situ hybridization covering the period from the cartilagenous bone anlage to the formation of a regular growth plate in the newborn. Analysis of the early stages around the seventh week of gestation revealed for type II collagen a strong hybridization signal limited to the chondrogenic tissue. In this study we present a rare case of peripheral desmoplastic ameloblastoma and discuss its clinical features, histopathology, and inmunoshistochemical profile. This article reports a new case of this unusual neoplasm in a 66 year-old woman in which the main complaint was an asymptomatic swelling located in the right body of mandible. Histopathological findings were similar to the two previously reported cases of this tumor. Geleophysic dysplasia, a rare disorder with autosomal-recessive inheritance, is characterized by short stature with a “happy-looking” facial appearance. Nonskeletal findings, particularly in an advanced stage, include hepatosplenomegaly and valvular cardiopathy. Based on the clinical picture and the detection of lysosome-like inclusions in hepatocytes, the underlying cause of the condition is considered to be a storage defect in the metabolism of glycoproteins. The Italian experience in paediatric liver transplantation during the period 1988–1999 is reported herein. Patients and methods.
