The effect of long-term excercise on the intervertebral disc collagen concentration (hydroxyproline), collagen-synthesizing enzymes (prolyl-4-hydroxylase, PH, and galactosyl-hydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase, GGT) and hydroxypyridinium crosslinks was studied in ten female beagle dogs. The dogs were run on a treadmill for 1 year starting at the age of 15 weeks. The daily running distance was gradually increased to 40km, which distance the dogs ran for the final 15 weeks. Skeletal dysplasias with metaphyseal involvement show radiological changes which permit their classification. There are, however, changes in the cartilage which could be demonstrated by hip sonography in two children, one with Stickler's syndrome and the other with metaphyseal chondrodysplasia. The dangers of mis-diagnosis are discussed.

Abstract Objective. To provide data on the normal distribution of cartilage thickness in the knee joints of old-aged individuals. Design. The accuracy and reproducibility of cartilage thickness measurements were evaluated with A-mode ultrasound, and the cartilage thickness distribution was examined throughout both knee joints of nine individuals aged between 62 and 94 yr. Background. Post-synovectomy changes in the articular cartilage

Synovectomy of the left knee was performed in 37 immature rabbits, using the right knee for control. In the first set of experiments the articular cartilage was examined at weekly intervals for 8 weeks following the operation, paying particular attention to the metachromatic changes in the ground substance of the cartilage. In the second set of experiments, restoration of synovium was examined. In the third and fourth set of experiments, the uptake of S35 by the cartilage was assessed using autoradiography and densitometry. In the fifth set of experiments, alterations in S35 uptake by the chondrocitic cells of the cartilage were studied by electron microscopy.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi form a mutualistic symbiosis with plant roots, and are key for nutrient cycling in many ecosystems. Here we study the ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in the Oueme Superieur reserve forest in Benin (West Africa). We use phylogenetic methods to test if the species from the study site are closer to other tropical African species than to species from other regions. The Oueme Superieur community was represented by nine Operational Taxonomic Units in Amanitaceae, one in Boletaceae, one in Cantharellaceae, one in Cortinariaceae, two in Inocybaceae, fourteen in Russulaceae and three in Sclerodermataceae. David Markson’s Reader’s block (1996) consists of 193 pages of quotations, anecdotes, names, and fragments. The book bears the paratext “A novel,” and the work has indeed been read as a narrative whole, in which “an aging author [...] contemplates the writing of a novel.” By being out of ordinary and therefore worth of telling, the anecdotes or curiosities seemingly fulfill the requirements of a “natural” narrative as defined by Monika Fludernik (1996). However, a mass of such mini-narratives, mixed with even more fragmentary texts, seems to defy narrativity (and tellability).
