Combined Therapy with Azathioprine, Prednisolone, and Ursodiol in Patients with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: A Case Series

1999

No established medical therapy alters the progressive course of primary sclerosing cholangitis. To explore the potential usefulness of combined therapy with azathioprine, steroids and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in primary sclerosing cholangitis.Case series.University hospital in Mainz, Germany.15 patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis.Azathioprine (1 to 1.5 mg/kg of body weight per day), prednisolone (1 mg/kg per day initially, tapering to 5 to 10 mg per day) and UDCA (500 to 750 mg per day).Clinical and laboratory evaluation, liver biopsy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (a30% change in stenosis was considered significant). After a median observation period of 41 months (ran…

Lower strength of the human posterior patellar tendon seems unrelated to mature collagen cross-linking and fibril morphology

2009

The human patellar tendon is frequently affected by tendinopathy, but the etiology of the condition is not established, although differential loading of the anterior and posterior tendon may be associated with the condition. We hypothesized that changes in fibril morphology and collagen cross-linking would parallel differences in material strength between the anterior and posterior tendon. Tendon fascicles were obtained from elective ACL surgery patients and tested micromechanically. Transmission electron microscopy was used to assess fibril morphology, and collagen cross-linking was determined by HPLC and calorimetry. Anterior fascicles were markedly stronger (peak stress: 54.3 ± 21.2 vs.…

Platelet aggregation, ATP release and cytoplasmic Ca2+ movement: the effects of cloricromene.

1994

A placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, cross-over study was performed in 24 healthy volunteers. 12 volunteers received Cloricromene (100mg gastroresistant capsules twice a day) for 7 days, the other volunteers received identical placebo capsules. Subsequently, after a 7-day wash-out period, at day 15, each subject received the other treatment. Blood samples were taken on days 1 and 15 (1st day of each treatment) as well as on days 7 and 21 (7th day of each treatment) before the morning drug administration and 2 and 4 hours later. Platelet aggregation and ATP secretion were studied in whole blood (WB) using ADP and collagen as stimulating agents. Ca2+ fluxes were studied in aequorin…

Modelling the non-linear multiple-lag effects of ambient temperature on mortality in Santiago and Palermo: a constrained segmented distributed lag ap…

2008

Objectives: Exposure to ambient temperature can affect mortality levels for days or weeks following exposure, making modelling such effects in regression analysis of daily time-series data complex. Methods: We propose a new approach involving a multi-lag segmented approximation to account for the non-linear effect of temperature and the use of two different penalised spline bases to model the distributed lag of both heat and cold exposure. Compared with standard splines, the novel penalised framework is more flexible at short lags where change in coefficients is greatest, and selection of the maximum lag appears substantially less important in determining the overall pattern of the effect. …

Lubricin is expressed in chondrocytes derived from osteoarthritic cartilage encapsulated in poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate scaffold

2011

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by degenerative changes within joints that involved quantitative and/or qualitative alterations of cartilage and synovial fluid lubricin, a mucinous glycoprotein secreted by synovial fibroblasts and chondrocytes. Modern therapeutic methods, including tissue-engineering techniques, have been used to treat mechanical damage of the articular cartilage but to date there is no specific and effective treatment. This study aimed at investigating lubricin immunohistochemical expression in cartilage explant from normal and OA patients and in cartilage constructions formed by Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) based hydrogels (PEG-DA) encapsulated OA chondrocytes. The e…

Short review: Field recovery and potential information value of small elements of the skeleton

2011

The recovery of small elements of the skeleton (e.g. hyoid, carpals, and hand and foot phalanges) is one of the established tasks of the archaeologist and physical anthropologist when working in the field, whether in an archaeological or forensic context. In the present work, we illustrate the field location of ossified laryngeal cartilages, hand sesamoids, and the medial clavicular epiphyses. The potential information offered by these elements is briefly summarized. The frequency of these elements observed in a cemetery dating from 1943 indicates the possibility that these elements could be found in other contexts at a higher frequency than expected.

Molecular basis of a new type of C1q-deficiency associated with a non-functional low molecular weight (LMW) C1q: parallels and differences to other k…

1998

Analysis of an abnormal C1q molecule of individuals of a Moroccan family by ultracentrifugation in sucrose gradients revealed a low molecular weight C1q (LMW-C1q). We investigated the molecular basis of this defect by sequencing all six exons of the three C1q genes. One point mutation in the codon for Gly at position 15 (GGT) of the B chain was found resulting in an amino acid substitution to Asp (GAT). The exchange not only leads to an interruption of the collagen-like motif Gly-X-Y, but also introduces one negatively charged residue per B chain which results in two additional charges per structural subunit (A-B, C-C, A-B). The mutation which has been identified by DNA-sequencing in the C1…

Hysteroscopic resection of the septum improves the pregnancy rate of women with unexplained infertility: a prospectine controlled trial

2009

Objective: To assess fecundity of infertile women after surgical correction of uterine septum. Design: Prospective controlled trial. Setting: Three academic infertility clinics. Patient(s): Forty-four women affected by septate uterus and otherwise unexplained infertility represented the study group (group A), and 132 women with unexplained infertility were enrolled as control subjects (group B). Intervention(s): Hysteroscopic metroplasty was performed in group A, and group B was managed expectantly. All women were followed-up for 1 year without any other intervention. Main Outcome Measure(s): Fecundity rate was calculated as the number of pregnancies per 100 person-months Result(s): Pregnan…

Dimensions of the laryngeal framework in adults

1994

The increasing application of sophisticated electrophysiological, radiological and surgical methods to the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal disorders requires a profound knowledge of the size and proportions of the human larynx and it's cartilaginous components. Only inadequate data regarding this subject have so far been accessible. The larynges of 53 patients (28 male and 25 female, age 25-88 years, in the means 59 years) were removed during routine autopsy 12-48 h post mortem and immediately submitted to morphometric investigation. None of the patients had histories or visible signs of laryngeal disease. Anatomical preparations were performed with customary surgical tools and morphom…
