Positive Forces and Vicious Mechanisms Behind Innovative Activity in a Lagging Region
2005
Literature about economic growth of less developed regions is traditionally concentrated on problems related to gaps and on the ways by which such regions might “run after” or even catch-up the more advanced economies. In these approaches, therefore, the central issue very often consists in the application of growth models constructed on the experiences of development. On the other hand, pure literature on development refers mainly to Third World realities and deals essentially with problems linked to economic and social development of low income countries. Last but not least, traditional literature about technological change generally analyses growth processes of industrialised countries a…
Volatile dilution during magma injections and implications for volcano explosivity
2016
Magma reservoirs underneath volcanoes grow through episodic emplacement of magma batches. These pulsed magma injections can substantially alter the physical state of the resident magma by changing its temperature, pressure, composition, and volatile content. Here we examine plagioclase phenocrysts in pumice from the 2014 Plinian eruption of Kelud (Indonesia) that record the progressive capture of small melt inclusions within concentric growth zones during crystallization inside a magma reservoir. High-spatial-resolution Raman spectroscopic measurements reveal the concentration of dissolved H2O within the melt inclusions, and provide insights into melt-volatile behavior at the single crystal…
EVALUATION OF STABILITY AND ENZYMATIC ACTIVITIES OF PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES USED IN PANCREATIC ISLET TRANSPLANTATION
2009
In pancreatic islets purification, for cell therapy applications, the major enzymes used are obtained from Clostridium hystoliticum; class I and class II collagenases (Coll-G and Coll-H). In a well defined composition Coll-G/Coll-H together enzymes working on hydrophobic amminoacid, the neutral protease (Dispase) or the thermolysin (Thermostable Neutral Protease), are used in Langerhans islets purification. By electrophoresis and gelatin zymography approaches, in combination to densitometry quantitative valuation we have compared in composition, stability and autodigestion processes C. hystoliticum collagenases, Neutral protease and Thermolysin from two different producers, Roche and Serva.…
Semiautomated quantification of the fibrous tissue response to complex three‐dimensional filamentous scaffolds using digital image analysis
2021
Fibrosis represents a relevant response to the implantation of biomaterials, which occurs not only at the tissue-material interface (fibrotic encapsulation) but also within the void fraction of complex three-dimensional (3D) biomaterial constructions (fibrotic ingrowth). Usual evaluation of the biocompatibility mostly depicts fibrosis at the interface of the biomaterial using semiquantitative scores. Here, the relations between encapsulation and infiltrating fibrotic growth are poorly represented. Virtual pathology and digital image analysis provide new strategies to assess fibrosis in a more differentiated way. In this study, we adopted a method previously used to quantify fibrosis in visc…

Indefinite integrals of Lommel functions from an inhomogeneous Euler–Lagrange method
2015
ABSTRACTA method given recently for deriving indefinite integrals of special functions which satisfy homogeneous second-order linear differential equations has been extended to include functions which obey inhomogeneous equations. The extended method has been applied to derive indefinite integrals for the Lommel functions, which obey an inhomogeneous Bessel equation. The method allows integrals to be derived for the inhomogeneous equation in a manner which closely parallels the homogeneous case, and a number of new Lommel integrals are derived which have well-known Bessel analogues. Results will be presented separately for other special functions which obey inhomogeneous second-order linear…

Analytical solution for multisingular vortex Gaussian beams: The mathematical theory of scattering modes
2016
We present a novel procedure to solve the Schr\"odinger equation, which in optics is the paraxial wave equation, with an initial multisingular vortex Gaussian beam. This initial condition has a number of singularities in a plane transversal to propagation embedded in a Gaussian beam. We use the scattering modes, which are solutions of the paraxial wave equation that can be combined straightforwardly to express the initial condition and therefore permit to solve the problem. To construct the scattering modes one needs to obtain a particular set of polynomials, which play an analogous role than Laguerre polynomials for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We demonstrate here the recurrence relations need…
BOMBYLIIDAE (Diptera) FROM LAMPEDUSA ISLAND
2011
The authors report new records of Bombyliidae (Diptera) for Lampedusa Island discovered during field investigations carried out for a broader research project in the island. Data are updated to July 2010. Four species of Bombyliidae new for Lampedusa have been found, one of which has not been recorded for Sicilan dipterofauna. The present data bring to 60 the species of Diptera reported for Lampedusa Island.
