The contamination legacy of a decommissioned iron smelter in the Italian Alps

2018

The economically important activity of metal processing can tend to contribute to the degradation of the environment. Smelting is an important source of contaminants, dispersing large quantities of potentially toxic elements (PTE) and coproducts into the environment. Soils in the vicinity of smelters frequently contain high concentrations of PTE. In terms of the quantities processed, the major PTE are iron (Fe), aluminium (Al), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn); of these Cu, Pb and Zn are, potentially, highly hazardous elements. The general problem addressed by this study is to determine if the PTE concentration in the soils of an area downwind from a decommissioned iron…

The impact of liquid-pressurized extracts of Spirulina, Chlorella and Phaedactylum tricornutum on in vitro antioxidant, antiinflammatory and bacteria…

2022

The impact of Spirulina, Chlorella and Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) microalgal extracts obtained by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, microbial growth and in vitro gut microbiota composition was evaluated. PLE, compared to conventional extraction, led to a significant (p < 0.05) increase in proteins, carbohydrates, polyphenols, and antioxidant capacities of the three microalgal extracts. Moreover, Spirulina and P. tricornutum extracts significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the in vitro activation of the inflammatory NF-κB pathway. The microalgal extracts had also an inhibitory effect on the pathogenic bacteria while potential benefi…

Cracking the nut: Geographical adjacency of sister taxa supports vicariance in a polytomic salamander clade in the absence of node support

2008

The urodelan genus Lyciasalamandra, which inhabits a relatively small area along the southern Turkish coast and some Aegean islands, provides an outstanding example of a diverse but phylogenetically unresolved taxon. Molecular trees contain a single basal polytomy that could be either soft or hard. We here use the information of nuclear (allozymes) and mitochondrial (fractions of the 16S rRNA and ATPase genes) datasets in combination with area relationships of lineages to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among Lyciasalamandra species in the absence of sufficient node support. We can show that neither random processes nor introgressive hybridization can be invoked to explain that the m…

Le declamazioni minori attribuite a Quintiliano I (244-292)

2019

The volume includes a textual revision, the first Italian translation and a commentary on the Minor Declamations 244-292 ascribed to Quintilian. The commentary, non only addresses the many critical issues posed by a particularly complex text, but also exploits the results of the strand studies on declamation that has been flourished in the last 20 years involving rhetorical as well as literary and anthropological perspective. The introductory essay by Lucia Pasetti (coordinator of the PRIN project supporting the research) focuses on the issues of textual typology and relationship with literary and juridical tradition and addresses the thorny question of Quintilian authorship. Il volume cont…

Le Declamazioni Minori dello Pseudo-Quintiliano. Discorsi immaginari tra letteratura e diritto

2016

Dedicated to the Minor Declamations ascribed to Quintilian, this volume explores different aspects of this ancient school book: a manual introducing the reader to the daily work of a master rhetorician, as well as an instrument to explore ancient imagery and the close relationship connecting rhetoric, literature and law

Healthcare costs of the SATisfaction and adherence to COPD treatment (SAT)study follow-up

2019

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterised by recurring exacerbations. We estimated the costs of healthcare resources for COPD management funded by the Italian National Healthcare Service (INHS) for one year. Methods We examined the demographic, clinical, and economic variables at enrolment and follow-up visits (at 6 and 12 months) of COPD patients participating in the SAT study and referred to 20 Italian pulmonary centres with different institutional characteristics. Costs were expressed in Euro (€) 2018. A random effects log-linear panel regression model was performed to predict the average cost per patient. Results Most of the centres were public in…

P125 Tiotropium plus olodaterol combination therapy provides lung-function benefits when compared to tiotropium alone, irrespective of prior treatmen…

2015

Rationale Tiotropium plus olodaterol (T+O) is a novel once-daily combination of the long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) tiotropium (T) and the recently approved long-acting β 2 -agonist (LABA) olodaterol, for use as maintenance treatment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These post hoc analyses of data from the two pivotal 1-year TONADO studies determined whether treatment with a long-acting bronchodilator (LABD) prior to randomisation affected the lung-function benefits of T+O 5/5 µg (via Respimat®) compared to T 5 µg (via Respimat®). Methods In the studies, 2124 patients had not received prior LABD treatment (T+O n = 426; T n = 454) and 3038 patients had (T+O n = 603, …

P121 Characteristics of COPD patients with and without maintenance treatment at baseline, by GOLD stage: TONADO: Abstract P121 Table 1

2015

Rationale The efficacy and safety of the once-daily combination of tiotropium (T), a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA), and olodaterol (O), a long-acting β 2 -agonist (LABA), for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been established. We investigated whether there was a difference in the characteristics of COPD patients with and without baseline maintenance treatment. Methods Two replicate, randomised, 52-week, double-blind, parallel-group, Phase III trials (NCT01431274; NCT01431287; n = 5162) assessed the efficacy and safety of once-daily treatment with T+O (2.5/5 μg; 5/5 μg; Respimat® inhaler) compared to the individual components. Baseline characteristi…
