Design criteria of tubular linear induction motors and generators: A prototype realization and its characterization

2013

In this paper a mathematical model of tubular linear induction machines (TLIM) with hollowed induced part is recalled. Moreover the design criteria of a TLIM with hollowed iron induced part are presented as well as the technological processes to be adopted and the choice of materials to construct the various parts. The methodologies for mechanical assembling and electric wiring are considered too. A prototype with bimetallic induced part has been designed and built. Finally some experimental results on electrical and mechanical variables, when the machines are used as motors, are shown.

Initial strain effects in multilayer composite laminates

2001

A boundary integral formulation for the analysis of stress fields induced in composite laminates by initial strains, such as may be due to temperature changes and moisture absorption is presented. The study is formulated on the basis of the theory of generalized orthotropic thermo-elasticity and the governing integral equations are directly deduced through the generalized reciprocity theorem. A suitable expression of the problem fundamental solutions is given for use in computations. The resulting linear system of algebraic equations is obtained by the boundary element method and stress interlaminar distributions in the boundary-layer are calculated by using a boundary only discretization. …

Unusual basement layer in the midgut of gammaridean Niphargus virei Chevreux (Crustacea, Amphipoda).

1988

The basement membrane of the midgut and posterior caeca epithelium in the gammaridean amphipod Niphargus virei Chevreux, 1896 is made of an unusual structure. This basal lamina, properly called “basal layer”, shows a dense sheet formed by a system of dense hexagonal plates connected by thin filaments. Histochemical studies and enzymatic reactions lead to the conclusion that these structures are proteinaceous, without collagenous protein, and embedded in a neutral polysaccharide matrix. The possible mechanical significance of these mesenteric structures is discussed.

Evidence for the mechanosensor function of filamin in tissue development

2016

AbstractCells integrate mechanical properties of their surroundings to form multicellular, three-dimensional tissues of appropriate size and spatial organisation. Actin cytoskeleton-linked proteins such as talin, vinculin and filamin function as mechanosensors in cells, but it has yet to be tested whether the mechanosensitivity is important for their function in intact tissues. Here we tested, how filamin mechanosensing contributes to oogenesis in Drosophila. Mutations that require more or less force to open the mechanosensor region demonstrate that filamin mechanosensitivity is important for the maturation of actin-rich ring canals that are essential for Drosophila egg development. The ope…

Melatonin and phytomelatonin: Chemistry, biosynthesis, metabolism, distribution and bioactivity in plants and animals—an overview

2021

Melatonin is a ubiquitous indolamine, largely investigated for its key role in the regulation of several physiological processes in both animals and plants. In the last century, it was reported that this molecule may be produced in high concentrations by several species belonging to the plant kingdom and stored in specialized tissues. In this review, the main information related to the chemistry of melatonin and its metabolism has been summarized. Furthermore, the biosynthetic pathway characteristics of animal and plant cells have been compared, and the main differences between the two systems highlighted. Additionally, in order to investigate the distribution of this indolamine in the plan…

Stimulatory and inhibitory effects of ethanol on hippocampal acetylcholine release

1998

Using the microdialysis technique and sensitive HPLC procedures for the determination of acetylcholine (ACh) and ethanol, we investigated the release of ACh in rat hippocampus after acute ethanol administration. Systemic administration of ethanol (0.8 and 2.4 g/kg i.p.) led to peak ethanol concentrations of 21 and 42 mM in the hippocampus, respectively. The high dose caused a long-lasting inhibition of basal ACh release by up to 33%. Local infusion of scopolamine (1 microM) enhanced hippocampal ACh release up to eightfold in the presence of neostigmine (10 microM), and this stimulated release was also inhibited after systemic ethanol administration (by up to 45%). The low dose of ethanol (0…

Aminoallenylidene complexes of ruthenium(II) from the regioselective addition of secondary amines to butatrienylidene intermediates: a combined exper…

2003

Aminoallenylidene complexes trans-[Cl(dppm)2RuC3(NRR )(CH3)] are obtained from the regioselective addition of secondary amines to trans-[Cl(dppm)2Ru C C C CH2] . Unsymmetrically substituted amines give rise to Z/E isomeric mixtures. Dynamic 31P NMR spectroscopy gave an energy barrier of about 85 kJ mol 1 for rotation around the CN-bond pointing to a large contribution of the iminium alkynyl resonance form trans-[Cl(dppm)2Ru–C C– C( NRR )(CH3)] . This is also indicated by the pronounced bond length alternation within the RuC3N-chain as is revealed by X-ray structure analysis of the Z isomer of the (benzylmethyl)methylamine derivative 2d. The issue of NR2 rotation was also addressed by DFT ca…

Catecholamine release in human skin--a microdialysis study.

2003

Dermal microdialysis might be a promising tool to investigate properties of sympathetic neurons in the skin as investigation of peripheral noradrenergic neurons in humans usually relies on highly variable vasoconstrictor reflexes or on indirect measurements like skin temperature recordings. To evaluate this technique, 21 experiments were performed in 15 healthy subjects with four intracutaneous microdialysis fibers (diameter, 200 microm; cutoff, 5 kDa) at hands or feet. After 60 min, saline perfusion tyramine at concentrations of 0.195 to 200 microg/ml was applied for 15 min followed by a 15-min saline perfusion again. Catecholamine concentrations were detected through high-performance liqu…

Mielikuvien käyttö laulunopetuksen työvälineenä

2015

Laulunopiskelu vaatii useiden eri lihasten kontrolloinnin opettelemista. Laul…

FINITE ELEMENT RESOLUTION OF CONVECTION-DIFFUSION EQUATIONS WITH INTERIOR AND BOUNDARY LAYERS

1996

We present a new algorithm for the resolution of both interior and boundary layers present in the convection-diffusion equation in laminar regimes, based on the formulation of a family of polynomial-exponential elements. We have carried out an adaptation of the standard variational methods (finite element method and spectral element method), obtaining an algorithm which supplies non-oscillatory and accurate solutions. The algorithm consists of generating a coupled grid of polynomial standard elements and polynomial-exponential elements. The latter are able to represent the high gradients of the solution, while the standard elements represent the solution in the areas of smooth variation.
