BEM analysis of a piezoelectric structural health monitoring system for delamination detection

In the present work a piezoelectric based structural health monitoring (SHM) system is analyzed with the aim of assessing the ability of the piezoelectric patch to detect both edge and embedded delaminations proper of flange-skin composite laminated structures. he boundary element model is developed for piezoelectric solids and is implemented by taking advantage of the multidomain technique to model laminated and cracked configurations. A comparison among different kinds of stator lamination in tubular linear machines

In this paper the authors perform a comparison among three different stator structures for a Tubular Permanent Magnet Linear Machine. Each structure is characterized by its own lamination which is expected to contribute to the overall performance of the machine. A detailed analysis of the main figures of merit of the three configurations has been carried out in order to identify the configuration with the best characteristics. Significant data such as flux distribution, rated voltage and current, force on the moved and power losses have been compared. The results show that the choice of a mixed stator lamination allows to improve the performance of these machines.

Laminated carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts: Origin, processes and implications

Carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts of Patara and Aspendos (southern Turkey) were studied to analyse the nature of their regular layering. Optical microscopy and electron-backscattered diffraction results show an alternation of dense, coarsely crystalline, translucent laminae composed of bundles and fans of elongate calcite crystals with their c-axes parallel to the long axis, and porous, fine-grained laminae with crystals at near-random orientation. The ?18O and ?13C data show a strong cyclicity and anti-correlation, whereby high and low ?18O values correspond to dense columnar and porous fine-grained laminae, respectively.
