In composite structures, the presence and growth of delamination mechanisms in static or fatigue loading conditions is of paramount interest and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has adopted the three-points bend end-notched flexure test (3ENF) as the standard for measurement of mode II toughness. The drawback of the 3ENF test is the unstable crack growth and a modified version of the test, namely the four points bend end-notched flexure test (4ENF), has been proposed. Laminated carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts: Origin, processes and implications

Carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts of Patara and Aspendos (southern Turkey) were studied to analyse the nature of their regular layering. Optical microscopy and electron-backscattered diffraction results show an alternation of dense, coarsely crystalline, translucent laminae composed of bundles and fans of elongate calcite crystals with their c-axes parallel to the long axis, and porous, fine-grained laminae with crystals at near-random orientation. The ?18O and ?13C data show a strong cyclicity and anti-correlation, whereby high and low ?18O values correspond to dense columnar and porous fine-grained laminae, respectively. Flying laser spot thermography for the inspection of aerospace grade Fibre Metal Laminates

This work analyses a Non Destructive Testing approach for the detection of interlayer disbonds in aerospace grade Fibre Metal Laminates (FMLs). The NDT setup consists of a continuous laser, focused and moved over the material surface, while an IR thermal camera acquires its thermal footprint. A numerical model of the NDT setup is presented, where the material thermal response is analysed to evaluate the features of the defects signatures. In particular, the response from various types of FMLs is evaluated.

Cohesive-frictional interface model with oligocyclic degradation of surfaces roughness

The present work is devoted to the constitutive modelling, through the classical interface kinematical formulation, of the mechanical behaviour of the internal adhesive layers, connecting different bodies. The proposed interface constitutive model couples a cohesive behaviour with a frictional one and it is able to follow the transition from the sound condition to the fully cracked one by means of a specific interpretation of the damage variable. In the fully cracked condition, the dilatancy exhaustion and the frictional strength degradation are also modelled.

Morphometry of microstromatolites in calcrete laminar crusts and a fractal model of their growth

The laminar crust, constituting the upper part of calcretes (terrestrial CaCO3 accumulations inside surficial sediments), is a succession of thin layers of various colors and shapes resembling micro-stromatolites. The crust structure and its diagenetic evolution are similar to stromatolites. A quantitative study of its structure was made using image analysis. Euclidian parameters were calculated to describe lamina shape. Eight hundred and eighty-six laminae were divided into six classes from the flatest forms to columnar shapes. Wind turbine blades are exposed to numerous impact risks throughout their lifetimes. The impact risks range from bird collisions during operation to impacts with surrounding structures at the time of transportation and installation. Impact loads on the fibre composite blades can induce several complex, simultaneously interacting and visually undetectable damage modes and have a high potential to reduce the local and global blade stiffness. Design criteria of tubular linear induction motors and generators: A prototype realization and its characterization

In this paper a mathematical model of tubular linear induction machines (TLIM) with hollowed induced part is recalled. Moreover the design criteria of a TLIM with hollowed iron induced part are presented as well as the technological processes to be adopted and the choice of materials to construct the various parts. The methodologies for mechanical assembling and electric wiring are considered too. A prototype with bimetallic induced part has been designed and built. Finally some experimental results on electrical and mechanical variables, when the machines are used as motors, are shown.

Outgassing of Mantle Volatiles in Compressional Tectonic Regime Away From Volcanism: The Role of Continental Delamination

In this study we discuss the occurrence of mantle-derived heat and volatiles (i.e., helium and CO 2 ) feeding hydrothermal systems in a seismically active margin between two convergent plates (African and European) without any signals of volcanism. The helium (He) isotopes clearly indicate a mantle-derived component in the outgassing volatiles. The estimated mantle-derived He fluxes are up to two to three orders of magnitude greater than those in a stable continental area. Such high He fluxes cannot be provided by a long-lasting diffusion, thereby implying a more efficient transport (i.e., advective transport through faults). Infrared Thermography assisted evaluation of static and fatigue Mode II fracture toughness in FRP composites

Abstract The work proposes the combined use of a Modified Transverse Crack Tension (MTCT) test coupon and Infrared Thermography, to evaluate the static and fatigue behaviour of Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites under Mode II delamination. Artificial delaminations starters are added to the TCT coupon, whose effects on the Strain Energy Release Rate are discussed.
