Properties and erosional response of soils in a degraded ecosystem in Crete (Greece)
2013
To study desertification processes relating to soil erosion, a climatological and altitudinal gradient from south to north was selected in Crete (Greece) and four locations were selected along the gradient. At the locations precipitation ranged from 1400 mm/year at the highest location to 400 mm/year at the lowest. All locations are affected by the actual land use: intensive grazing, small controlled fires, and abandoned agricultural terraces. Representative soil profiles were described in the field and analyzed in the laboratory, and rainfall simulation experiments in the field measured soil erosion over different soil surfaces and land uses. Data on physical and chemical properties were o…
The Impact of Climatic Change and Land Use on the Hydrological Response of Mediterranean Soils; a Study along a Climatological Gradient in Crete (Gre…
1995
Abstract To help understand the impact of Climatic Change on the soils of the Mediterranean area, measurements of physical soil properties were carried out in a mountain zone in Crete (Greece), following a climatological gradient. Four experimental slopes were chosen, south facing and situated on limestone lithology. Soil hydrological properties including infiltration, runoff and sediment concentration, were measured and the percentage of waterstable microaggregation in the soil was calculated and used as an indicator of soil degradation. It was found that as well as climate, soil properties were highly affected by the extensive land use of the area, intensive grazing by goats and small sca…

<em>Changes in land use in watershed will affect peak discharge and degradation land. It is becoming an indicator of better or worse use of land in watershed area. This study aims to analysis land use change, to predict peak flows based on changes in land use and land use change scenarios in the Pami watershed. This study uses a number of primary data and secondary data. Primary data were obtained from observations of the condition of the land and soil sampling, which is then analyzed in the laboratory. Secondary data were obtained from literature and related agencies such as geographical map and thematic maps including land map, administrative area maps, land use maps in 1996-2015 an…
Human induced soil erosion and gully system development in the Late Holocene and future perspectives on landscape evolution: The Myjava Hill Land, Sl…
2013
In humid climate zones, like Central Europe, past soil erosion and gullying are strongly connected with agricultural expansion, and extreme soil erosion events often play an important role in land abandonment. This paper provides a case study to demonstrate the interaction between land use, soil erosion, floodplain development, and land use changes in a 0-order catchment in the Babikovce catchment, Myjava Hill Land, situated in western Slovakia. Sedimentological, pedological, geoarchaeological and historical data indicate two main periods of intensive hillslope erosion and gullying since the High Middle Ages. In particular, a few extreme precipitation events (or rapid snowmelts) caused inte…

Abstract This paper presents the results of 40 years of research on the gully system in the Doly Podmularskie catchment (0.35 km² in size), which is situated in the south-western part of the loess-covered Naleczow Plateau in SE-Poland. Topographic, stratigraphic and pedologic investigations, and monitoring of a tributary gully (gully area: 0.7 ha, catchment: 2.5 ha) were combined with historical, archaeological and palaeoecological records. The results reveal a long and complex history in terms of the temporal and spatial extent and the impact of land use on gully erosion, and the long-term feed-back mechanisms between land use changes and natural processes since the end of the Pleistocene.…
The Effect of Hydrology on Soil Erosion
2020
In this Special Issue, we have tried to include manuscripts about soil erosion and degradation processes and the accelerated rates due to hydrological processes and climate change. We considered that the main goal was successfully reached. The new research focused on measurements, modelling, and experiments under field or laboratory conditions developed at different scales (pedon, hillslope, and catchment) were submitted and published. This Special Issue received investigations from different parts of the world such as Ethiopia, Morocco, China, Iran, Italy, Portugal, Greece and Spain, among others. We are happy to see that all papers presented findings characterized as unconventional, provo…
Spatial variability of channel changes in a mediterranean ephemeral stream in the last six decades (1946-2006)
2014
An analysis of morphological changes during the last six decades is presented for the Rambla de Cervera, a Mediterranean ephemeral stream located in the eastern sector of the Iberian Mountain Range. The studied channel (16.5 km) has two contrasted sectors: a horst confined sector (5.5 km) and a graben sector (11 km). Channel changes were analysed through the analysis of aerial photographs, with geographical information systems (GIS) and comparison of topographic surveys made with a GPS-RTK. Between 1946 and 2006 the Rambla de Cervera, underwent channel adjustments comparable to those observed in other Mediterranean rivers. The gravel channel markedly narrowed, losing width (68.5%) and chann…
Urban sprawl and health outcome associations in sicily
2019
Urban sprawl has several negative impacts on the environment, the economy, and human health. The main objective of this work was to formulate and validate a sprawl/compactness index for Sicilian municipalities and evaluate its association with health outcomes. An ecological study was conducted with 110 municipalities in Sicily, Italy. Principal component analysis was adopted to create the sprawl/compactness Sicilian index, and linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the sprawl index and health outcomes. More variance of the new sprawl index was explained by the working factor, followed by density, surface extension, and land use mix. When validating the index…
The Functionality of Farmer Organisations and Their Role in Land Issues (La Fonctionnalite Institutionnelle Des Organisations Paysannes Et Leur Role …
2008
This is the final report of a study conducted with participative methods in Guinea, West Africa. The study analyses the functionality of small farmer organisations and the role they play in agricultural land issues. After a short introduction in chapter 1, we identify the macro-sociological context of the study as well as its importance for the country's development in chapter 2. The following chapter 3 treats the context of land use and land rights in the Fouta Djallon region as well as more specifically in our intervention zone. The empirical part in chapter 4 analyses the functionality of a range of small farmer organisations in the sub-prefecture Hind, prefecture Lab. In the following c…
Pesticide occurrence in the waters of Júcar River, Spain from different farming landscapes.
2017
A combined methodology to identify and quantify farming chemicals in the entire Júcar River basin has been developed. The procedure consisted of the application of environmental forensic criteria associating laboratory analytical samples, cartographic analysis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and synthetic statistical analysis. Sampling involved the collection of 15 samples in surface waters distributed alongside the Júcar River and its two main tributaries (Cabriel and Magro Rivers). The analytical procedure involves generic sample extraction and selective determination of up to 50 target pesticides by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Geogra…
