Effect of soil and canopy factors on vegetation of Quercus robur woodland in the boreo-nemoral zone: A plant-trait based approach

2013

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the effect of soil and canopy on the understory vegetation of Quercus robur stands in Latvia, located in the boreo-nemoral zone. To determine the main processes regulating formation of the plant communities, the understory vegetation of Q. robur stands was described using plant traits. Vegetation and soils were described in 24 plots representing contrasting soil types and tree species composition. Redundancy analysis was used to determine the relation between vegetation, described using plant traits (proportion of species with each trait), and soil and canopy factors. About 50% of the variation in vegetation described by plant traits was explai…

The monolingual habitus of German society challenging the interests of an autochthonous minority language : Linguistic landscapes in the Sorbian “cap…

2019

This paper analyzes the LL in the city of Bautzen / Budyšin in Germany, a town which is frequently considered the “capital” of the Slavonic minority of the Sorbs. It focuses on the societal role of Sorbian in relation to practices and ideologies of mainstream German society. The vast majority of signs in Bautzen / Budyšin are in German only. Sorbian is essentially restricted to explicitly Sorbian institutions and to local and regional administration. Interviews conducted in shops and on the streets reveal that paternalistic attitudes common to perceptions of language policies and minority languages in Germany dominate; practices maintain the common monolingual habitus in German society. Residential satisfaction and spatial configurations in a periurban area

2011

Since the 1960s, French cities are concerned with an urban sprawl process. This urban sprawl leads to the emergence of a particular space located at the interface between the city and the countryside: the periurban. The social, morphological or the spatial practices of its inhabitants give the suburban a particular singularity and specificity. It is a space of contradiction that attracts both because of the "natural" living environment that it provides to households, but also because of its proximity to the city and the opportunities related to accessibility to various urban amenities. To understand more precisely this enthusiasm for periurban areas, this thesis proposes to explore the indiv…

Phylogenetic analysis of cryptic speciation in the polychaetePygospio elegans

2012

Development in marine invertebrate species can take place through a variety of modes and larval forms, but within a species, developmental mode is typically uniform. Poecilogony refers to the presence of more than one mode of development within a single species. True poecilogony is rare, however, and in some cases, apparent poecilogony is actually the result of variation in development mode among recently diverged cryptic species. We used a phylogenetic approach to examine whether poecilogony in the marine polychaete worm, Pygospio elegans, is the result of cryptic speciation. Populations of worms identified as P. elegans express a variety of developmental modes including planktonic, broode…

The Current European Normative Frame

2016

The rapid introduction of the normative frame on the European scale, both communally and nationally, follows the historical investigation presented in the first chapter of this dissertation, with a double purpose: to define the issues of the current debate on the one hand and to describe the state of the art on the other. Directive 2001/42/EC of the European Parliament and Council of 27 June 2001 concerning the assessment of effects of certain plans and programmes on the setting was officialised in July of that year, generating a wide range of experiences. It establishes a basic framework that should be adopted by the member states of the European Union. In the previous chapter, we showed t…

RNA viruses as complex adaptive systems

2004

RNA viruses have high mutation rates and so their populations exist as dynamic and complex mutant distributions. It has been consistently observed that when challenged with a new environment, viral populations adapt following hyperbolic-like kinetics: adaptation is initially very rapid, but then slows down as fitness reaches an asymptotic value. These adaptive dynamics have been explained in terms of populations moving towards the top of peaks on rugged fitness landscapes. Fitness fluctuations of varying magnitude are observed during adaptation. Often the presence of fluctuations in the evolution of physical systems indicates some form of self-organization, or where many components of the s…

Investigation on a low environmental impact solvent mixture applied to a wooden painted slab

2016

Cleaning is one of the most complex and delicate step in a restoration project, often due to the manufacturing techniques of the artifacts and their advanced state of decay. Eco-friendly solvents can permit to execute the cleaning operations with a reduced health impact for the restorers and for the environment. In this work, the performance of the 1,3- dioxolane/methylal (DIOX-MET) solvent mixture is evaluated over a wooden painted slab that had been covered with a thin layer of a protective varnish, probably during a previous conservation work performed in the Sixties. Removal of this varnish has been considered on behalf of its yellowing degradation process, which caused chromatic change…

Walory ekoturystyczne Przesieki Śląskiej w okolicach dawnego (zapomnianego) miasta Schwirz (woj. opolskie, Polska)

2019

The present work outlines the natural, historical and cultural values of the selected fragment of Silesian Przesieka located in the southern part of a locality called Miejsce (the former town of Schwirz) (Świerczów municipality, Namysłów сounty, Opole Province, Poland). Here, the natural values are also mixed with unique historical, cultural and landscape values. The authors reconstruct the original riverbed of the Stobrawa River using a Digital Elevation Model. They describe border castles and their location by addressing the repeated records stating that these constitute earlier rudiments of a castle belonging to the same duchy. They describe the history of the locality Miejsce in its cur…

Territorial development models: A new strategic vision to analyze the relationship between the environment, public goods and geographical indications

2021

Abstract Geographical indications (GIs) are increasingly seen as a tool to support sustainable local development. This study focuses on how geographical indications can contribute to a territorial public system, and how this can be threatened by several market failures. Starting from the economic literature on public goods, this document highlights how geographical indications, and their legal protection, can guarantee a sustainable development model. This article aims to illustrate and develop new economic arguments that support a more comprehensive political approach to the contribution that Geographical indications make to sustainable development. The research is focused in Sicily on the…
