“Promenade along the coast: Paul Nash and Dave McKean revisit Dymchurch”
2019
This paper examines the specificity of the coastline as a natural, cultural and medial boundary and interface. It focuses on how the motif of the coastline is depicted and remediated in the works of English artists Paul Nash and Dave McKean: between 1919 and 1925, as he was coming to terms with the aftermath of the First World War, Nash created a series of pictures depicting Dymchurch on the coast of Kent in England; McKean’s 2016 commemorative graphic novel Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash is a biographical exploration of Nash’s youth, of his experience of the war and of his recovery in the immediate post-war period. The interplay between memories of the trenches and the landscape of the…

Landscape as a literary subject in Italy, from Dante to contemporary writers
« WILSON HARRIS, L’ÉCRIVAIN HYDROGRAPHE » (2012), Fred d'Aguiar
2014
National audience; This chapter is a translation of an essay by Fred d'Aguiar first published in the volume "Postcolonial Ghosts / Fantômes postcoloniaux" (M. Joseph-Vilain & Judith Misrahi-Barak, eds.). It analyzes Wilson Harris's uses of the landscape of Guyana in his novels.
"More or Less American: Sergio Leone's Vision of America in 'Once Upon a Time in the West' (1968)"
2012
This article focuses on the representation of the American West in Sergio Leone's fourth Western, which is the first to include several scenes that have been shot on location in the U.S. The author argues that Once Upon a Time in the West offers a critique not only of the classical Hollywood Westerns Leone adored, but also of his own brand of Italian Western, which may, in part, explain why members of the counter-culture were so enthused by the film at its release. The first section examines the way the use of American locations foregrounds the artificiality of Leone's spatial construction. The second explores the political implications of the inclusion of various minority groups, thereby r…
Landscape and public policies: evaluation and indices
2008
historical object. Today, landscape belongs to the field of public policies and citizenship. In this way, landscape can be considered as a subject for territorial intelligence, including the governance concept, and public policies actions. In this general frame, we have to focus on the links between landscape and public policies, and on their evaluation.
Genome‐phenotype‐environment associations identify signatures of selection in a panmictic population of threespine stickleback
2023
Adaptive genetic divergence occurs when selection imposed by the environment causes the genomic component of the phenotype to differentiate. However, genomic signatures of natural selection are usually identified without information on which trait is responding to selection by which selective agent(s). Here we integrate whole-genome-sequencing with phenomics and measures of putative selective agents to assess the extent of adaptive divergence in threespine stickleback occupying the highly heterogeneous lake Mývatn, NE Iceland. We find negligible genome wide divergence, yet multiple traits (body size, gill raker structure and defence traits) were divergent along known ecological gradients (t…
Future rural landscapes : the necessary co-evolution between agricultural landscape and energy landscape
2022
This article explores the ongoing transformation process affecting the agricultural and energy landscape. The complexity of the landscape (natural and artificial) in which we live, calls for urgent reflection on how to achieve effective integration between vegetation and the built environment. The landscape has always been subject to mutation. Man and the consequences of his actions have often been the trigger for it. Today we are in a necessary transition phase, especially from an energy point of view. The landscape will change again and this time more quickly because of the urgency imposed by the new policies implemented (European Green Deal, NRRP, etc.). The article emphasises the indisp…
