Conservation of traditional rural biotopes in Finland : a social-ecological approach

This research focuses on conservation of traditional rural biotopes, which are biodiverse meadows and wood-pastures that are dependent on management through grazing or mowing. These low-intensity management actions have become rare as a result of agricultural modernisation. I have utilised a social-ecological approach in order to seek for the most critical factors hindering conservation of traditional rural biotopes in Finland. Tree species influences diversity of ground-dwelling insects in afforested fields

Abstract Impaired natural ecosystems, such as agricultural lands, are restored toward original or other target stage. Because the long agricultural history has changed the physical, chemical and biological features of the soil, afforested fields can harbor novel species assemblages and interactions. Our overall aim was to quantify the diversity of ground beetles and ants in early successional afforested fields. In a large scale field experiment, we compared plots that had been afforested 25 years ago by planting monocultures of birch, pine or spruce trees. Echinococcus multilocularis is a parasite of public health importance causing the fatal zoonotic disease alveolar echinococcosis. The parasite's eggs are dispersed in the environment through the fox faeces. Epidemiological issues associated with the disease led to the monitoring of the endemic status in foxes in France and in Europe. Fox faeces collected in the field were tested for the presence of the parasite and assembled in a georeferenced database. GIS-assisted analysis investigated relationships between landscape characteristics and potential risk. Three scale levels were successively explored. The Iberian Iron Age caves are defined as a specific model of sacred space. First, from a territorial perspective, they are identified as liminal spaces where the collective participation, integration and the sense of belonging is reinforced. And secondly, as multisensory contexts, where different ritual practices, highly symbolised, are performed. These spheres, cut off from the well-known and daily scenarios boost the sensory hypersensitivity, strengthened by the connection between the senses and the natural scenario.
