Structural properties of phosphatidylcholine in a monolayer at the air/water interface

Neutron reflectivities of phosphatidylcholine monolayers in the liquid condensed (LC) phase on ultrapure H 2 O and D 2 O subphases have been measured on a Langmuir film balance. Using a dedicated liquid surface reflectometer, reflectivities down to R = 10 -6 in the momentum transfer range Q z = 0–0.4A -1 were accessed. In a new approach, by refining neutron reflectivity data from chain-perdeuterated DPPC-d 62 in combination with x-ray measurements on the same monolayer under similar conditions it is shown that the two techniques mutually complement one another. We report a semiquantitative method for determining trace amounts (<1%) of thermodynamically stable forms in polymorphic mixtures, focusing on sample preparation ef- fects on solid phase transitions. Tegafur (5-fluoro-1-(oxolan-2-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine- 2,4-dione) was used as a model material in this study. The amounts of the thermodynamically stable $ tegafur were increased to levels detectable by powder X-ray diffractometry by grind- ing the samples in a ball mill in the presence of water. The profiles of the transmission diffraction spots from a Langmuir-Blodgett film of aliphatic chain compound are derived from three plausible models of molecular organisation : a polycrystalline phase with long-range orientational order; a paracrystal possessing a density of point defects which do not interrupt the lattice rows ; and a Nelson and Halperin hexatic smectic phase in the «Debye-Huckel» limit of weakly-interacting dislocations. The three resulting predictions are distinctly different. Abstract One of the original structural studies on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers of 22-tricosenoic acid using the technique of reflection high-energy electron diffraction was performed by Peterson and Russell (1984, Phil. Mag. A, 49, 463). In their paper, four distinct structural arrangements of the long-chain fatty acid were identified, where the arrangement adopted by a particular sample was found to depend on the substrate and deposition conditions. Toward new organic/inorganic superlattices: Keggin polyoxometalates in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films

The effect of Keggin heteropolyoxotungstates (XW12O40n- with X = H2, P, Si, B or Co) on Langmuir films has been studied for monolayers of DODA (dimethyldioctadecylammonium) and DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine). Marked modifications of the compression isotherms have been observed when the Keggin anions were dissolved in the subphase: this demonstrates that the polyanions interact with the monolayer. Langmuir−Blodgett (LB) films have been readily obtained from these systems (even with DPPC) for a particular range in polyanion concentration. Thickness and temperature dependent structure of Cd arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett films

Abstract The structure of monolayers of Cd arachidate on water and on solid support, and the thickness dependent changes when building up a multilayer via the LB technique are studied by means of grazing incidence diffraction of X-ray. In monolayers the perpendicularly oriented amphiphilic molecules are arranged in a hexagonal lattice, whereas for thicker layers (even for three layers) they crystallize in an orthorhombic unit cell with a reduced molecular are ( A = 18.2 A 2 ) compared to that of the monolayer ( A = 19.7 A 2 ). On the Electrostatic Component of the Adhesional Interaction between Solid Substrates and Langmuir Monolayers

The work of adhesion between Langmuir monolayers and solid surfaces in a hydrophilic Langmuir-Blodgett configuration has been measured as function of the surface charge densities σ of the contacting surfaces. It was derived from the equilibrium meniscus height which was measured with the transfer fluorescence microscope. The surface charge density of the contacting surfaces was varied by changing the subphase pH. With both surfaces negatively charged (dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine onto SiO2-substrates) and low charge densities (σ < 1 e−/100 A2)) we observe a decrease of the adhesion with increasing charge density.
