Teaching foreign language to the elderly : teachers perceptions

 Väestön ikääntymisen myötä eläkeikäisten ihmisten rooli on noussut tärkeään asemaan myös vieraiden kielten oppimisessa ja opetuksessa. Ikääntyneitä oppijoita on kuitenkin tutkittu Suomessa vielä valitettavan vähän. Poikkeuksena mainittakoon Aino Jaatisen (2003) paljolti omaksi avukseen laatima tutkimus ikääntyneistä englannin oppijoista, jota on käytetty pohjakirjallisuutena myös tässä tutkielmassa. Tämän proseminaarityön päämääränä on ollut kartoittaa vieraiden kielten opettajien havaintoja iäkkäistä oppijoista sekä heidän mahdollisesti käyttämiä opetusmetodejaan. Se, miten motivoituneita ihmiset ovat tekemään asioita elämässään, vaikuttaa suuresti heidän saavutuksiinsa. Motivaatiolla on myös huomattava yhteys menestymiseen vieraiden kielten opiskelussa. Motivaation vaikutusta vieraiden kielten opiskeluun on tutkittu laajasti, mutta opiskelijoiden mielipidettä opettajien käyttämiin motivointikeinoihin ei ole juuri tutkittu Suomessa. Teaching classic put to the test: Do tongue twisters work for L2 pronunciation?

Tongue twisters are a controversial pronunciation teaching classic. Whereas some see tongue twisters difficult and frustrating for learners, others find them fun and motivating. This study was inspired by these opposing views and the fact that previous studies have failed to offer convincing proof of whether this technique works for L2 pronunciation learning. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää oppijoiden näkemyksiä videopelien nykyisistä ja mahdollisista käyttötavoista kieltenopetuksessa ottaen huomioon koehenkilöiden koulutus- ja pelaajataustan. Pelitutkimusta ei ole vielä tehty kauaa, joten ala on hajanainen, mutta tämä tutkimus pohjautuu tietokoneavusteisen oppimisen (CALL) ja videopeleihin perustuvan oppimisen (DGBL) tutkimukseen. Maahanmuuttajien määrä Suomessa on kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti sitten 1990-luvun. Muutos väestörakenteessa vaikuttaa myös suomalaisten koulujen arkeen ja opettajien työhön, mutta tutkimusta maahanmuuttajista erityisesti kieliaineiden oppijina on vähän.
