This chapter explores how experientially based pedagogical activities that involve participation in real life service encounters provide occasions for developing L2 interactional competence. The data comprises novice L2 students’ self-recorded interactions in service settings and videorecordings of classroom planning activities and de-briefing discussions, where the students reflect on their experiences. The analysis traces what kinds of occasions for learning arise as the students move between the classroom and the real-world service settings. Kaksi ensiluokkalaista lasta, oppimispulmaton venäjänkielinen suomenoppija ja suomenkielinen luku- ja kirjoitushäiriöinen lapsi, joilla kummallakin oli ongelmia vokaalikvantiteetin tunnistustaidossa, osallistuivat tietokonepohjaiseen kvantiteettipeli-interventioon. Tunnistustaito mitattiin jakson aikana seitsemän kertaa, ja kielelliset ja kognitiiviset taidot alku-, loppu- ja seurantamittauksessa. Abstract Currently, intercultural and heterogeneous realities set the tone in 21st literary education. Therefore, the role of multicultural children's literature plays an essential role in order to reflect this intercultural diversity in Spanish classrooms. In this regard, The Other Side (2001) portrays an African American experience where interaction, communication and negotiation become crucial aspects for their protagonists. In this way, this picture book can be used not only to teach English as a foreign language in primary school, but also to show values like respect, tolerance and partnership.

New is not always costly: evidence from online processing of topic and contrast in Japanese.

Two visual ERP experiments were conducted to investigate topic and contrast assigned by various cues such as discourse context, sentential position and marker during referential processing in Japanese. Experiment 1 showed that there was no N400-difference for new vs. given noun phrases (NPs) when the new NP was expected (contrastively focused) based on its preceding context and sentential position. Experiment 2 further revealed that the N400 for new NPs can be modulated by the NP’s contrastive meaning (exhausitivity) induced from the marker.
