Contralateral processus closure to prevent metachronous inguinal hernia: A systematic review.

2019

Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most frequent operations in pediatric surgery and is increasingly performed laparoscopically. The latter introduced new momentum in the debate on the necessity of contralateral exploration, as the rates of contralateral patent processus vaginales and metachronous inguinal hernias determine whether a routine closure would be overtreatment or useful prevention. We searched MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus at the 6th of September 2017; reference lists and CrossRef were snowballed for reports citing identified studies. Eligibility criteria were age18 years, preoperative diagnosis of unilateral hernia, laparoscopic evaluation, and publication sinc…

Impact of perceptual ability and mental imagery training on simulated laparoscopic knot-tying in surgical novices using a Nissen fundoplication model.

2011

Background: Performing minimally invasive surgery requires training and visual-spatial intelligence. The aim of our study was to examine the impact of visual-spatial perception and additional mental training on the simulated laparoscopic knot-tying task performed by surgical novices. Methods: A total of 40 medical students randomly assigned to two groups underwent two sessions of laparoscopic basic training on a VR simulator (SimSurgery®, Oslo, Norway). The variables time and tip trajectory (total path length of the instrument tip trajectory) were used to assess the performance of the intracorporeal knot-tying task using a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication model. The experimental group com…

Duodenal Atresia Repair Using a Miniature Stapler Compared to Laparoscopic Hand-Sewn and Open Technique

2019

Abstract Background: Laparoscopic duodenal atresia (DA) repair is a demanding procedure that requires performing a watertight anastomosis in a small working space. Drawbacks of the approach have be...

Single-centre, triple-blinded, randomised, 1-year, parallel-group, superiority study to compare the effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve ga…

2019

IntroductionBariatric surgery is increasingly recognised as an effective treatment option for subjects with type 2 diabetes and obesity; however, there is no conclusive evidence on the superiority of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. The Oseberg study was designed to compare the effects of gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy on remission of type 2 diabetes and β-cell function. Methods and analysisSingle-centre, randomised, triple-blinded, two-armed superiority trial carried out at the Morbid Obesity Centre at Vestfold Hospital Trust in Norway. Eligible patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to either gastric bypass or sleeve gastrecto…

A Proposal for Novel Standards of Histopathology Reporting for D3 Lymphadenectomy in Right Colon Cancer: The Mesocolic Sail and Superior Right Colic …

2020

Background Strong agreement exists concerning the standards of pathologic reporting for total mesorectal excision and complete mesocolic excision. It represents a quality standard that correlates with survival. However, no agreed standards of reporting are available to define D3 lymphadenectomy for right colectomy. Objective The purpose of this study was to define anatomopathological standards of specimen quality obtained from the surgical specimen when an oncologic right hemicolectomy with D3 lymphadenectomy has been correctly performed. Design This study was conducted in 2 different phases. The first part consisted of a cadaver-based study of right colon anatomy, and the second part consi…

Trocar-related abdominal wall bleeding in 200 patients after laparoscopic cholecistectomy: Personal experience

2006

AIM: To determine the complications and incidence of the first and second access-related vascular injuries induced by videolaparoscopic cholecistectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed vascular injuries in 200 consecutive patients who underwent videolaparoscopic cholecistectomy from 2003 to 2005. One hundred and one patients with placement of radial expanding trocars were assigned into group A and 99 patients with placement of pyramidal tipped trocars into group B. All the patients were submitted to open access according to Hasson for the first trocar. RESULTS: Bleeding did not occur at the intraoperative cannula-site in group A. However, it occurred at the intraoperative cannula-site …

Laparoscopic resection of an epiphrenic diverticulum of the esophagus

2000

Diverticulectomy of epiphrenic diverticula of the esophagus is conventionally performed via left thoracotomy. We report the case of a 57-year-old man who presented with an epiphrenic diverticulum that was resected using a transperitoneal laparoscopic technique.

Laparoscopic drainage of liver abscess: case report and literature review.

2013

Aim To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the minimally invasive surgical approach (laparoscopic drainage) of liver abscesses in selected cases. Case report Male, 58 years old, from a rural area, presented with epigastric abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, loss of appetite, a palpable mass in the epigastrium and neutrophilic leukocytosis. CT revealed a complex multiloculated liver abscess in segments 2-3. Systemic antibiotic therapy alone was ineffective; percutaneous drainage was excluded due to the characteristics of the lesion. Result Given the complexity of the lesion, a laparoscopic approach was chosen involving complete drainage of the abscess, debridement and irrigation; the cavity…

Histamine release in mesenteric traction syndrome during abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery: prophylaxis with H1 and H2 antihistamines

2002

Objective and design: Mesenteric traction syndrome is described as sudden tachycardia, hypotension and flush. Among other etiological factors eventeration or mesenteric traction of the small intestine may cause histamine release from mesenteric mast cells. We hypothesized that mesenteric traction syndrome may be positively influenced by prophylactic antihistamine administration.¶Methods: Male patients (n = 17, ASA groups III-IV, 48–78 years old) were investigated in a randomised double blind study during elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. Eight patients had pre-anaesthetic prophylaxis with dimetindene (H1-receptor antagonist) plus cimetidine (H2-receptor antagonist), 9 patient…
