Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition of Cr2O3 and Nd2O3 coatings. Oxide growth kinetics and characterization
2000
Thin oxide films of Cr2O3 and Nd2O3 were prepared, using Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) technique, to protect stainless steels against corrosion at high temperature. The conditions of precursor volatilization were studied by thermogravimetry. Deposited film growth kinetics depended on the deposition parameters, particularly substrate temperature, gas flow rate and location of substrate in the coating reactor. The influence of the deposition parameters on the deposition rate and the uniformity of the films is discussed. The oxide films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force mi…
Enhanced Magneto-optic Kerr Effect and Magnetic Properties ofCeY2Fe5O12Epitaxial Thin Films
2015
Integrated magneto-optical components require magnetic thin films for tuning of their parameters, and for many applications yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is the material of choice. The authors study high-quality cerium-substituted YIG thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition, which possess tunable magnetic anisotropy and a greatly enhanced magneto-optic Kerr effect, compared to conventional films. This discovery presents new opportunities for engineering tomorrow's magneto-optical and spintronic logic devices.
Magnetism of Co-doped ZnO thin films
2007
We have investigated magnetic and transport properties of 5% Co-doped and undoped ZnO thin films deposited on $r$ plane ${\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The Co doped films showed paramagnetic and ferromagnetic behavior as well as a high magnetoresistance and a small anomalous Hall effect. In a range of $0\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{to}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ at low temperatures we observed a double sign change of the magnetoresistance. For undoped ZnO films, prepared by the same conditions, only a negative MR was observed, but surprisingly also a very small anomalous Hall effect. We explain our results…
Impact of granularity on transport properties of mechanically stressed La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 films
2001
Abstract (La,Ca)MnO 3 is one of so called collosal magnetoresistive materials and it is of interest to correlate its transport properties to film growth in order to optimize its performance. Two-hundred nanometers thick (100)La 0.67 Ca 0.33 MnO 3 films were grown by laser ablation on (100)SrTiO 3 , (100)LaAlO 3 and (100)(LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 +(Sr 2 AlTaO 6 ) 0.7 substrates. The films were granular in structure with low angle boundaries between the grains. The volume of the unit cell was considerably smaller for films grown on a SrTiO 3 substrate than on LaAlO 3 . At temperatures higher than the one where the spins order, the strongest response of resistivity on temperature ρ ( T ) was measured for…
Infrared pulsed laser deposition of niobium nitride thin films
2011
We have successfully fabricated superconducting niobium nitride thin films on single crystals of magnesium oxide using a pulsed laser deposition technique where 1064 nm (photon energy ~1.16 eV) laser pulses from an Nd:YAG laser were used for ablation. A correlation between the superconducting transition temperature, the nitrogen base pressure during deposition and the lattice parameter of the produced NbN films was observed. Superconductor-insulator-normal metal junctions fabricated using these NbN films as the superconductor revealed nonlinear electrical characteristics at 4.2 K associated with quasiparticle tunneling.
Enhancement of photoconversion efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells exploiting pulsed laser deposited niobium pentoxide blocking layers
2015
Abstract Among all the photovoltaic technologies developed so far, dye-sensitized solar cells are considered as a promising alternative to the expensive and environmentally unfriendly crystalline silicon-based solar cells. One of the possible strategies employed to increase their photovoltaic efficiency is to reduce the charge recombination at the cell conductive substrate through the use of a compact blocking layer. In this paper, we report on the fabrication and characterization of dye-sensitized solar cells employing niobium pentoxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) thin film blocking layer deposited through the pulsed laser deposition technique on conductive substrates. The careful selection of the optimal…
New process of silicon carbide purification intended for silicon passivation
2017
Abstract In this work, we report on a new, efficient and low cost process of silicon carbide (SiC) powder purification intended to be used in photovoltaic applications. This process consists on the preparation of porous silicon carbide layers followed by a photo-thermal annealing under oxygen atmosphere and chemical treatment. The effect of etching time on impurities removal efficiency was studied. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) results showed that the best result was achieved for an etching time of 10 min followed by gettering at 900 °C during 1 h. SiC purity is improved from 3N (99.9771%) to 4N (99.9946%). Silicon carbide thin films were deposited onto s…
Nd:YVO4 crystalline film grown by pulsed laser deposition
2009
Abstract We present the preliminary results obtained in the growth of thin films of Nd-doped YVO4 (YVO) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on amorphous substrate. The films were obtained by ablating bulk YVO crystals doped with Nd3+ ions with a Q-switched tripled Nd:YAG laser in a UHV chamber. The samples have been characterized both morphologically (with X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscope measurements) and spectroscopically, by measuring fluorescence spectra and lifetime.
Optical, structural, and morphological characterisation of epitaxial ZnO films grown by pulsed-laser deposition
2013
We report on ZnO epitaxial growth by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) on different substrates, such as quartz, sapphire, and GaN template. Approximately 1 mu m-thick films were grown under different substrate temperatures and background oxygen conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated preferential growth along the c-axis direction with a full-width at half maximum(FWHM) of the rocking curve as narrow as 230 arcs in the case of the GaN template. Low-temperature photoluminescence showed A-excitonic emission near 3.36 eV and a FWHM of (DXA)-X-0 emission as small as 2.89 meV at 9 K. Atomic force microscope measurements showed that roughness as low as 18 nm could be obtained. These results p…
Conductance control at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3-interface by a multiferroic BiFeO3 ad-layer
2014
Multilayered BiFeO3 (BFO)/LaAlO3 (LAO) thin film samples were fabricated on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. In this work, the ferroelectric polarization of a multiferroic BFO ad-layer on top of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LAO/STO interface is used to manipulate the conductivity of the quasi-2DEG. By microstructuring the conductive area of the LAO/STO-interface, a four-point geometry for the measurement of the resistivity was achieved. Piezo force microscopy allows for imaging and poling the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization of the multiferroic layer. The resistance changes showed a linear dependence on the area scanned and a hysteretic behav…
