Dipole Source Analysis of Laser-Evoked Subdural Potentials Recorded From Parasylvian Cortex in Humans

2003

The location of the human nociceptive area(s) near the Sylvian fissure is still controversial in spite of evidence from imaging and evoked potential studies that noxious heat stimuli activate somatosensory areas in that region. Some studies have suggested the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) on the upper bank of the Sylvian fissure posterior to the central sulcus, others the anterior insula or parietal area 7b. In this study, we applied dipole source analysis techniques to laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) that were recorded from subdural grid electrodes in three patients. As a functional marker, auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) with a generator on the opposite bank of the Sylvian fissur…

Femtosecond laser versus mechanical microkeratome laser in situ keratomileusis for myopia: Metaanalysis of randomized controlled trials.

2011

Purpose To examine differences in efficacy, accuracy, safety, and changes in aberrations between femtosecond and mechanical microkeratome laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai First People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China. Design Evidence-based manuscript. Methods Data sources, including PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, were searched to identify potentially relevant prospective randomized controlled trials. Primary outcome measures were efficacy (uncorrected distance visual acuity ≥20/20), accuracy (±0.50 diopter mean spherical equivalent), and safety (loss of ≥2 l…

Effects of LASIK on Corneal Endothelium Using the 15-kHz IntraLase Femtosecond Laser

2011

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of LASIK with the 15-kHz IntraLase femtosecond laser on corneal endothelium. METHODS: In a prospective, single-center clinical trial, 138 patients (mean age: 32.0±7.1 years [range: 21 to 42 years]) underwent femtosecond LASIK for the correction of myopia −0.75 to −9.00 diopters (D) and cylinder up to 3.25 D. Patients were divided into two groups: contact lens group (n=76) and non-contact lens group (n=62). Pre- and 12-month postoperative specular microscopy of the central corneal endothelium was performed. The integrity of the central endothelium was assessed in terms of endothelial cell density and percentage of hexagonality. RESULTS: In the contact lens gro…

Attention to pain is processed at multiple cortical sites in man.

2004

Painful cutaneous laser stimuli evoked potentials (LEPs) were recorded over the primary somatosensory (SI), parasylvian, and medial frontal (MF) cortex areas in a patient with subdural electrode grids located over these areas for surgical treatment of epilepsy. The amplitudes of the negative (N2*) and positive (P2**) LEP peaks over SI, parasylvian, and MF cortex were enhanced by attention to (counting stimuli), in comparison with distraction from the stimulus (reading for comprehension). Late positive deflections following the P2** peak (late potential—LP) were recorded over MF and from the lateral premotor regions during attention but not during distraction. These findings suggest that att…

Laser treatment of giant xanthelasma palpebrarum

2013

Xanthelasma palpebrarum is the most common cutaneous xanthoma. It typically presents in middle-aged and older adults, most often around the eyelids. The diagnosis is made clinically. Giant xanthelasmas palpebrarum are xanthelasmas that extensively affect the superior and inferior bilateral eyelids. Many techniques have been put forward for treating these lesions (surgical, laser, and chemical techniques), but we describe our experience in the treatment of giant xanthelasmas by ultrapulsed CO2 laser. Between 2009 and 2012, in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Palermo, 12 patients with giant xanthelasmas were treated using a CO2 laser. The laser parameter…

Femtosecond laser versus mechanical keratome LASIK for myopia.

2005

To assess efficacy, safety, predictability, stability, and changes in corneal higher-order aberrations (CHOAs) and contrast sensitivity (CS) after a femtosecond laser for LASIK and standard LASIK for myopia.Prospective, randomized, comparative clinical study. Two hundred eyes of 100 consecutive patients who underwent LASIK treatment using the VISX S2 laser system. A femtosecond laser for flap creation was used in 100 eyes (50 patients; spherical equivalent [SE], -2.85+/-1.79 diopters [D]), and a mechanical microkeratome was used in 100 eyes (50 patients; SE, -2.90+/-1.63 D).Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), manifest refraction, CS by means of t…

"Downward steps technique" with CO2 ultrapulsed laser for the treatment of rhinophyma: our protocol.

2013

Abstract BACKGROUND: The rhinophyma is an important soft-tissue hypertrophy of the nose. In literature a wide range of surgical approaches to rhinophyma has been described such as dermoabrasion, scalpel shave, cryosurgery, electrocautery, near total excision with skin grafting, and laser excision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors describe their experience with CO(2) ultrapulsed laser in 14 elderly male patients, using their personal approach, the Downward steps technique. With this technique they removed the pathological hypertrophic tissue using a progressive reduction of the laser power during the treatment. They obtained good results from morphological and aesthetic point of view, in a …

Determination of triamterene and its main metabolite hydroxytriamterene sulfate in human urine by capillary electrophoresis using ultraviolet absorba…

2002

Abstract Two capillary electrophoresis methods have been developed for the direct determination of triamterene and its main metabolite hydroxytriamterene sulfate in human urine. Analytes were detected using conventional UV detection as well as laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection with an HeCd-laser operating at a wavelength of 325 nm. The results of both detection techniques were compared. Indeed, the limit of quantification was eightfold lower using LIF detection (50 ng/ml) in comparison to UV detection (400 ng/ml). As no interference due to endogenous urine compounds was observed, direct urine analysis was feasible. Analysis was very simple and fast—one run could be performed within…

Stimulated Raman and Cars Spectroscopy of ν1 and 2ν2 (A1) Bands of 12CF4

1994

Two experimental coherent Raman techniques, stimulated Raman and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), were employed to study the Raman spectrum of CF 4 in the 900 cm −1 region. The stimulated Raman and CARS spectra of the ν 1 band of CF 4 were recorded at high resolution. The analysis of these spectra enabled some spectroscopic constants of this band to be refined and higher order constants to be determined for the first time. The first high-resolution CARS spectrum of the 2ν 2 (A 1 ) harmonic band is also presented. The rotational transitions of this band up to J = 40 were assigned and the first set of spectroscopic constants for this sub-level were determined. These results imp…

Techniques for measuring aerosol attenuation using the Central Laser Facility at the Pierre Auger Observatory

2013

The Pierre Auger Observatory in Malargue, Argentina, is designed to study the properties of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with energies above 10(18) eV. It is a hybrid facility that employs a Fluorescence Detector to perform nearly calorimetric measurements of Extensive Air Shower energies. To obtain reliable calorimetric information from the FD, the atmospheric conditions at the observatory need to be continuously monitored during data acquisition. In particular, light attenuation due to aerosols is an important atmospheric correction. The aerosol concentration is highly variable, so that the aerosol attenuation needs to be evaluated hourly. We use light from the Central Laser Facility, lo…
